Ruth Layne Ferguson

Ruth Layne Ferguson, of Farmville, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2015 peacefully at the Woodland Watson Center surrounded by loving family and caretakers. 

She was born in Cullen on April 4, 1927 to the late Spencer Hatcher Layne and Marion Allen Layne.  She was well known for her service to the Farmville Baptist Church and her hundreds of clients for over 60 years that she serviced as a cosmetologist.
She graduated from Randolph Henry High School in Charlotte County in 1946.  She had a lifelong love of music and dancing that began as a teenager when she sang on the radio with her sister, Florence and other family members. She took great joy in cooking for her family, especially on holidays.
She is survived by her son, Charles Wayne Ferguson and son-in-law, Robert Reeves of Amherst; daughter, Darlene Ferguson Bratcher and son-in-law, Richard Bratcher of Farmville; a granddaughter by marriage, Katie Bratcher Rhine and husband, Jason Rhine, and a great-granddaughter, Maelyn Renee Rhine of Orlando, Fla.; special friend and caretaker, Barbara Hunter, and Ruth’s sister, Gloria who was a constant companion.

Surviving brothers and sisters are Floyd Layne (Aggie) of Mill Hall, PA; Billy Layne of Victoria; Ted Layne (Georgia) of Farmville; Norman Layne (Ida), of Cullen;  Nelson Layne (Loretta) of Dillwyn; Virginia Frangowlakis of Salem; Roberta Willis (Charlie) of St. Paul; and Gloria Adams (Kendall) of Cullen;  also, sister-in-law, Annette Layne of Farmville, and Linda Layne of Rustburg.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husband, Charles Oscar Ferguson, brothers, Carol Layne, Elbert Layne, Monroe Layne, Alvan Lane, Spencer Hatcher Layne Jr., Oliver Layne, Edward Layne, and sister, Florence Layne Pierce.
A funeral service celebrating her life was held Monday, September 14, at Farmville Baptist Church, Farmville.  Interment was at Spring Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Darlington Heights.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Woodland Facilities, Lynchburg General Hospital Comfort Care Center, and the 7 Hills Hospice Center for providing so much love and compassion to Ruth and her family during her final days.
The family suggests those wishing to make memorial contributions to consider the Farmville Baptist Church.
