SOUTH BOSTON — The Buckingham Dixie Majors (ages 15-19) team won the Virginia State Tournament in South Boston on Tuesday night. The team had to play a doubleheader against Goochland to win the tournament and took a 7-6 win in the first game and a 13-10 win in the second.
“The players wanted it and came together to play as a team. They got down in both games against Goochland, but they refused to fold,” said Manager Wes Saxon.
Buckingham started the tournament by defeating Franklin County 15-2 on Friday, then fell to Goochland 7-3 on Sunday before defeating Halifax-South Boston 5-4 on Monday, which sent them into the championship round.
Trent Jacobs led Buckingham during the tournament with two home runs.
With the state tournament win, Buckingham advances to the 2015 Majors World Series beginning Saturday, July 25, in Ozark, Ala. Buckingham is scheduled to play against Steel City (Ala.) at 4 p.m. in the first round of the 12-team double-elimination tournament.
“The team is exceptionally excited to go and play in the World Series. Everyone on the team has played a role in getting us to this point. Every player has worked hard, and this is every coach’s dream,” Saxon said.
“The coaching staff has also been great. John Stearrett, Cameron Gilliam and Bobby Jacobs have helped the team out tremendously and I am thankful for them.”
