The 30th annual James River Batteau Festival wound down late last week as several of the 18th century vessels docked for the evening at Cartersville in Cumberland County. Pictured above, Capt. Randy Waycaster, middle, sweeps his batteau, The Slate River, toward the boat landing under the Cartersville Bridge. At right, batteau captains Roy Turner, right, and Waycaster, holding his daughter Lydia, stand proud after docking. Turner is the captain of The Spirit of Buckingham.
