BUCKINGHAM — Three students identified by school officials in connection with a weapon being discovered inside Buckingham County High School on January 16 has been expelled from school for one year.
The Buckingham County School Board took the action unanimously to expel the three juveniles following a lengthy closed session, part of which regarded student discipline, during their meeting on Wednesday, February 11.
The motion to expel the three followed a staff recommendation, according to the motion made by District Seven Representative Theresa D. Bryant.
Following the meeting, Division Superintendent Dr. Cecil Snead told The Herald that in following policy and law, the expulsion was up for review after 365 days, meaning the expulsion was for one year. “They don’t automatically get to come back,” he stated.
In January, Snead told the newspaper that, “a small caliber handgun with no magazine” was found.
Buckingham Sheriff William G. “Billy” Kidd, Jr. then confirmed that the three were facing charges in connection with the incident.
Snead says that the administration learned about the presence of the weapon from a tip.
“It’s just an unfortunate circumstance that occurred…that we had to work through. And, I hope that a lot of people are learning a lot of lessons,” Snead concluded following the meeting.
