Vehicles Wreck On Icy Roads

PRINCE EDWARD — A wintry mix of precipitation Wednesday morning practiced the art of deception.

There was no accumulation unless, unfortunately, one counts the wrecked vehicles, particularly west of Farmville where conditions were worst.

“Too many to count” was how the Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Department answered a question Wednesday afternoon regarding the number of weather related accidents.

Earlier in the day, the sheriff’s office told The Herald that U.S. 460 West was as “slick as an onion.”

Nobody was criticizing schools systems that cancelled classes, either. The decision in Prince Edward County undoubtedly prevented school bus accidents and injuries to children.

Even dirt farm roads were still slippery treacherous to walk on mid-morning, despite the fact they looked no more than simply wet.

That was the deception.

For the record, the Prince Edward County Sheriff’s office did count and by 3 p.m. 11 accidents had been reported and responded to, some of them involving more than one vehicle.

The Buckingham County Sheriff’s Department had responded to seven weather related accidents by 3:25 p.m. and Cumberland, apparently safely east of the danger area, had no accidents to report.
