JANUARY 6 — Hubert Powell Atchley, 94, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 3, 2015. He was born on September 17, 1920 in Rutherford County, NC to the late James Ruel Atchley and Della Ensley Atchley.
A member of the Greatest Generation, Mr. Atchley was a veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945 after serving tours of duty in Italy and North Africa. For over 35 years he worked in retail business in Farmville before retiring in 1986 from Schewel Furniture. He was also a member of Farmville Lodge #41.
Mr. Atchley is survived by a son, Hubert Jr. and wife Elizabeth, of Roanoke; granddaughter, Ann Stewart and husband, Chris of Ashburn; grandson, Allen Atchley and wife, Nina of Bridgewater, NJ; great-grandchildren, Noah and Emily Stewart, and Nathan and Will Atchley; a sister, Elizabeth Harrison of Rutherfordton, NC; and a number of beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, the former Ann Elizabeth Kidd and brothers, Robert, Horace and Arnold Atchley.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and residents of The Woodlands for making his stay there for the last few years so pleasant and rewarding.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, Sheppards, VA.
A Masonic service will be held on Wednesday, January 7 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with visitation at 1:30 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery.
