High Bridge Hike Goes Under The Bridge
Published 1:08 pm Thursday, October 23, 2014
Relive a time in history when the North and South were battling for control of High Bridge during the end of the Civil War on October 25 for an up close and personal view of the Prince Edward County shores of the Appomattox River below the remarkable High Bridge.
Start the journey from the River Road parking lot about 1 p.m., walk to High Bridge, and meet a guide at the approach of the bridge at 1:30 p.m. From there, cross High Bridge and access the river from the Prince Edward side of the trail. You will be astounded by the scale and scope of High Bridge from the river bank looking up to the underside of the bridge.
Be prepared for a four mile round trip from the parking lot to the underside of High Bridge and back to your vehicle. Please bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes, as parts of the trail will be steep. Long pants are recommended and treat your clothes and hat with bug spray.
A parking fee applies at the River Road parking lot. For further information contact the park office at 434-315-0457 or email highbridgetrail@virginia.gov
