HAMPDEN-SYDNEY — An investigation continues into the September 9 break-in at Hampden-Sydney College that saw cash stolen from the college’s business office and an attempt made to enter an ATM machine in a second building.
The cash was stolen from a safe in the business office, according to H-SC’s Director of Marketing and Communications, Thomas H. Shomo.
The college declined to specify the amount of cash stolen that night.
Shomo did tell The Herald on Thursday morning, when asked, that the handle had been broken off the safe and its door pried open.
To another follow-up question, Shomo said that the intruder(s) entered the business office through a side door to the building after prying that door open.
The business office is located on the first floor of Cabell House, directly across from Via Sacra Road, in the heart of the campus between Atkinson Hall, which houses the president’s office, and the college’s museum.
The break-in occurred prior to 6:30 a.m. on the 9th of September, some time during the darkened hours after the office was closed on the evening of the 8th and before the return of employees the next morning.
The ATM machine upon which an attempt was made was located in Graham Hall, half a block away from the business office.
Shomo said both incidents are under investigation by law enforcement authorities on and off campus but specified “the investigation is being handled by the State Police.”
The college is asking anyone who saw anything suspicious near the two buildings to contact Campus Security at 223-6164.
