DILLWYN – The Buckingham County Minor League All-Stars are still alive in the District IV Tournament being played at Gene Dixon Memorial Park in Dillwyn.

Inclement weather that pushed through the area on Sunday suspended play after the BC All-Stars had eliminated Powhatan American 13-1 in an elimination game.

After receiving a bye on Friday, the BC All-Stars lost to Goochland 3-1 on Saturday in seven innings.

Goochland, which defeated Amelia on Monday night, is still undefeated in the tournament, and will receive a bye on Tuesday, while Buckingham and Amelia battle to see which team will advance to the tournament finals.

“We hit the ball well today,” said BC manager Charlie Allen following Sunday's game against Powhatan American. “Last night [against Goochland] we pitched well, and played good defense, but we were just tight at the plate. Any time you score just one run in a game, you're probably going to lose, but if you give up only one run in six innings – especially at this level -you like your chances at getting the win.”

Against Goochland on Saturday, the BC All-Stars scored its lone run in the bottom of the first inning.

Hayes Barton singled to lead off the inning, and came home when Jackson Allen reached base on a fielder's choice.

Goochland shut down Buckingham from there, as Allen collected BC's only other hit of the evening with a one-out single in the seventh.

The bats woke up from their long slumber in Sunday's game against Powhatan, as BC broke the game open in the top of the first with eight runs to put PA in a deep hole.

Powhatan scratched a run across in the bottom of the first, and threatened in the second and third and fourth innings, but Buckingham was able to get out of the trouble with no damage.

Buckingham scored three runs in the second and two more in the third to build a big enough cushion to end the game in four innings via the slaughter rule.

Barton, T.J. Jones, Allen and Jaquez Morton scored two runs apiece, while Delante Woodson, Amari Toney, Tae Toney, Cameron Taylor, Randy Bowen and Tyler Moore scored one run apiece.

“I think Goochland has proven that they're pretty good,” said Allen even before Goochland completed its rain-delayed victory over Amelia. “So, we've got to be encouraged by that. Also, we've pitched well in both of our games, and our fielding has been pretty good. We had an error or two in the Goochland game that gave them the late runs, but at this age, it's a part of the game.

“We should have gotten some confidence with [Sunday's] win. I think we now know that if our hitting and fielding can remain strong, and we can hit well enough, we're as good as anyone here, but we've got to be strong in all three areas of the game. If one falls off, either Goochland or Amelia will win the tournament.”
