Stations Save Streams

The Town of Farmville recently installed three new pet waste stations. Although most people are using the new pet waste stations properly, some are using the station to dispose of trash which can cause overflow before maintenance crews can empty them. One of the least suspected sources of water pollution is man or woman's best friend, like Coco, Dr. Carolyn Wells' dog pictured here. Pet waste, particularly from dogs, can be a significant contributor to poor water quality. When it rains, storm drains channel polluted water carrying contaminates – including pet waste – directly into our streams. Contrary to what most people believe, water going down storm drains does not go to a water treatment plant.
