“We are proud to help promising Buckingham County High School seniors continue their education,” said Robert Mayfield, plant manager for Tenaska Virginia Generating Station. “Education is the foundation for future success, and we are pleased to help young men and women achieve their goals and become the leaders of tomorrow.”

A committee at Tenaska's headquarters will select the college-bound senior to receive the scholarship. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate that they are prepared for college study, have good character and rank in the top 50 percent of their class.

Fueled by clean-burning natural gas, the Tenaska Virginia Generating Station is able to produce 885 megawatts of electricity for sale to Shell Energy North America (US), L.P., which markets the power. The facility is located on Route 761, north of Antioch and west of Palmyra.

Each year, the plant injects more than $6 million in salaries and payments to local contractors and vendors into the area economy. In addition to providing more than 1,600 hours of volunteer service performed by employees and other annual contributions, the plant received the 2008 Region V Creating Excellence Award from the Virginia Department of Education for its support of career and technical education. The Tenaska Virginia facility also received the 2008 Virginia Governor's Volunteerism and Community Service Award for employee involvement in elementary and middle school tutoring and mentoring programs.
