Herman Boone, the football coach whose role in integrating and unifying an Alexandria, high school in the early 1970s was captured in the film Remember the Titans, will be the speaker for Longwood University's commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy.

Boone will speak Thursday, Jan. 24, at 4 p.m. in Jarman Auditorium on “Becoming A Titan” for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium. A dessert reception will follow in Lancaster Hall's Rowe Gallery.

Longwood's MLK Day-related activities also will include a showing of Remember the Titans-in which Boone was por-trayed by Denzel Washington-about black and white players from formerly rival schools who united to win a state champion-ship in 1971 under Boone, who Longwood Interim President Marge Connelly called a “true symbol of social transformation.” The film, made in 2000, will be shown Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 8 p.m. in Wygal Auditorium.

In addition, faculty, staff and student volunteers will do a commemorative reading of the Dalai Lama's speech on “The Global Community” on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at noon on the steps in front of Lankford Hall. Members of the campus community will participate Monday, Jan. 21, in the MLK Service Challenge, in which they will perform community service projects.
