On Saturday, July 14, at the home of the hosts, Damien and Deanna Ferrel, 20 members of the Friends of the Appomattox River and their guests enjoyed a picnic dinner followed by ice cream and other desserts. Al Lookofsky demonstrated the ancient art of fire making using a bow drill fire starter. Several FAR members attempted imitating this method, which might serve a camping floater on a canoe or kayak well, as he or she wandered down a meandering Virginia river on a multi-day adventure.
