Lady Eagles Rally Past Brunswick

FARMVILLE – With its abundance of underclassmen, the Prince Edward County High School softball team has experienced some highs and lows this season.

The Lady Eagles averted what could have been a major low on Tuesday afternoon when they erased an early deficit in a big way to go on to defeat Brunswick 14-4 in six innings.

The Lady Eagles, who squeaked past Buckingham County on Monday afternoon 7-5, after giving up four runs in the bottom of the seventh, gave up four runs to the Lady Bulldogs in the first two innings of Tuesday's game to fall behind 4-2.

“We were a little shaky out there at the beginning,” said PECHS head coach Marvin Meadows. “We were very shaky on Monday at Buckingham. We just have a lot of people playing out of position, right now.”

PE Junior transfer Casey Meadows, who pitched the final four innings in relief seemed to get stronger in the circle as the day progressed. She matched that effort at the plate with a four-RBI performance.

Down 4-2, Prince Edward (5-4, 1-1 SSD) stormed back for seven runs to take a rather comfortable 9-2 lead after three innings.

Senior shortstop Sarina Eames cut down a sharp line drive with two out and a runner on third in the top of the third that saved a run and got the Lady Eagles out of a little bit of a jam.

Brunswick stranded a runner on third in the top of fifth, and the Lady Eagles stole what little momentum Brunswick still had with two runs in the fifth when Ashlee Todt and Elizabeth Reed reached base on errors. Todt scored when Reed reached base, and Reed crossed the plate on a double by Casey Meadows.

That double seemed to give her a boost, as she retired the final five batters she faced in order, and sent the game to the slaughter rule in the bottom of the sixth when her single to the fence scored Todt, who had started the rally with a two-out double, Eames, who walked and Reed, who reached on an error.

“We hit pretty well all day. Brunswick had some great plays in the outfield that stole what looked to be solid hits, early on,” said Marvin Meadows. “But I was proud of the way our girls didn't panic, and they just kept doing what they needed to do.”

Prince Edward has a chance with a scheduled Thursday afternoon game at Greensville, to enter the Easter Break at 2-1 in the district.

“That's pretty good for us right now,” said Marvin Meadows. “We're heading in the right direction. We know we have some talented freshmen, but even talented freshmen are still going to make freshman mistakes, and that's happened a couple of times, but they seem to be learning from them and learning how to handle the pressure.”
