Editor, The Herald:
I read an article in the (Richmond-Times Dispatch) on 1-12-12 in reference to a young man and he stated, “I got this whole city on my shoulders”. I would like for you all to know that those strong shoulders belong to a young man named Mr. Charles Williams. One might ask, what is leadership? Well leadership is inspiration; it generates a connection backed by integrity and intellect. A leader inspires others to lead, fulfill their goals, and build their character. I met Charles Williams at the age of 10, while coaching youth basketball. This young man, at that age showed leadership, and I knew then he was born to lead. Not only did he inspire me, but he inspired his teammates as well. Not only did we cover the fundamentals of basketball, but we also covered the fundamentals of making good decisions and being able to live with them.
Charles made a decision to pursue his education; whether we felt it was right or wrong, he made the decision. We should support and respect Charles' decision and watch this young man rise to achieve his goals in life. Not only does Charles excel in sports, he also excels academically, which I'm very proud of. The decision that Charles made to attend Fuqua School will be one of the many decisions that he will make throughout his lifetime. However, this young man will never forget who he is or where he came from. I know that Charles is focused and committed to being the best that he can be on the field and in the classroom.
So as you leave for college this fall to further your education, continue to be the leader and role model that you are. Use those “broad shoulders to carry your city on” young man, because I am very proud of your accomplishments. As always remember my saying, “We will win as a team, lose as a team, but at the end we will still remain as a team”. May God continue to bless and keep you through your endeavors. Always stay focused and keep God in your life!
