Heart of Virginia Soccer Club's U-14 team placed second in the first annual Conway Cup, held on the campus of Washington and Lee University in February. The tournament was organized as a fundraiser for Tony Conway, Associate Director of Admissions at Washington and Lee and a three-year letter recipient in soccer at Virginia Military Institute (1997-2001). Conway is battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Teams throughout Virginia competed. A round-robin-style schedule was played in the morning. Then, Heart of Virginia beat the Lexington Condors in the semi-finals but fell to Augusta Football Club's U-15 premier team in the championship round.

Tony Conway made an appearance from the press box and offered both a warm welcome and words of encouragement to all players. He then presented a trophy to the champions in the afternoon. Tony also presented the “Don't Shrink” award, reflecting his own personal philosophy, to Heart of Virginia goalkeeper Rafael Dimaano. Dimaano showed great determination during a very challenging championship game, making many impressive saves in goal.

“The Conway Cup was a great way for us to spend a day,” said Heart of Virginia coach Alex Spirn. “The level of competition was high, the weather was beautiful, and our players got to meet Tony, someone who is a true competitor. We all wish Tony well in his battle with ALS and thank him for inspiring our players to show commitment and drive, both on and off the soccer field.”
