September 1 – “You're never as old as you're going to get.”

I wish for you a safe and happy Labor Day weekend. Labor Day began as a tribute to those who actually engage in work. A day that has been set aside since its recognition as a federal holiday in 1894; 117 years ago. It is more important now than ever because of the scarcity of person that actually perform labor.

The Prospect Historical Society will meet September 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Prospect Fire House. Everyone is invited to attend.

Irene might have upset the apple cart for last Saturday's meatloaf dinner at the Prospect Fire House, but guess what it is planned to take place this Saturday, Sept. 3, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Prospect Fire House. The dinner is being sponsored by the Prospect Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

The Prospect Historical Society takes this opportunity to thank you for coming out to Prospect on Thursday week for the talk/walk along High Bridge Trail through Prospect. There was a very good turn out and the society appreciates the donations.

On Monday Mrs. Rita Utzinger and Mrs. Pat Smith enjoyed having lunch at Charley's. On Tuesday they went shopping in Lynchburg and had lunch.

Melanie Green came to visit Mrs. Pat Smith on Thursday.

Mrs. Emma Jean Sharpe and her mother, Mrs. Pat Smith, had breakfast at the Huddle House on Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon (Alecia Davis-) Johnson and children, Zeb and Evelyn; Gordon's father, Ralph Johnson of Virginia Beach and my mom, Gwen Hamlet of Phenix were able to spend two days relaxing in Mathews County recently (Aug 18 &19). The Hill family was gracious enough to invite them. The home we visited was located on the Piankatank River at its confluence with the Chesapeake Bay, so we enjoyed beautiful sunrises and river views. Gordon was truly in his element being on the water, and spent quality time with the children playing in the shallow water of the river while teaching them about crabs and jellyfish. During a day trip into Mathews, Alecia was very impressed with the eclectic collection of stores, galleries, restaurants, and their visitor's center in the attractive downtown area.

Mrs. Flora Bolt helped her granddaughter Miss Jennifer Page Bolt celebrate her birthday Aug. 28 at the home of Jennifer's parents Mr. and Mrs. Dale (Judy) Bolt. Also helping her celebrate were Mr. and Mrs. Chris (Melissa) Bolt, her uncle Steve Bolt, her other grandmother Mrs. Page Johnson, and Mrs. June Warriner. She received many nice gifts.

Mrs. Betty Jean Bolt and Stacy and Mrs. Flora Bolt enjoyed lunch at Merk's Place on Tuesday.

Joshua Bolt celebrated his 10th birthday on Wednesday. He will have his big celebration on Sunday at the Longwood soccer field, this will be Joshua Bolt day.

Sympathy is extended to the Bolt family on the death of their niece and cousin, Mrs. Carl (Cora Sue Vaughan) Sheppard of Willis Virginia in Floyd County.

Sympathy is extended to Mrs. Kyle (Jennifer) Bolt on the death of her grandmother Mrs. Patricia Eikmeimer of Cold Spring, MN. Jennifer has flown out for the funeral.

Mr. and Mrs. Scott (Hilda) Friend met Mr. and Mrs. Don (Betty) Meadows, Mr. and Mrs. George (Shirley) Moore, Jr.; and Mr. and Mrs. Richard (Margaret) Stockton at Merk's Place on Monday for breakfast and fellowship.

Family, friends and neighbors are sending special get well wishes to all those who are sick at this time.

Appomattox P.E. Presbyterian Church at Tuggle invites everyone to Sunday School at 10 a.m. with worship at 11 a.m. Rev. Chuck Klotzberger will fill the pulpit this Sunday.

Calvary Chapel-Farmville invites you to worship with them on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. They invite you to join them each week on Wednesday evening for Bible study for all age groups at 7 p.m. Calvary Chapel-Farmville is located at 45 Simpson Road in Prospect, two miles west of Dowdy's Corner just off of US 460.
