Grover A. Smith 72

JANUARY 20 – Grover Alton Smith, 72, of Farmville, died Monday, January 17, 2011 at the home of his daughter, Tammy Martin. Born in Appomattox County, on March 14, 1938, he was the son of Neola Barlow Smith and the late Grover Elwood Smith.

He was a US Navy veteran, a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Appomattox, and retired from the Farmville DMV office after 30 years service. Mr. Smith loved NASCAR and watching his son, Jared play baseball.

In addition to his mother he is survived by four children, Doug Smith, Tammy Martin and husband, Ricky, Cristy Whitted and husband, Byron, and Jared Smith; six grandchildren, Tiffany Baker, Brittney Smith, Sidney Gafford, McKenzie Perdue, Tyler Finley, and Jessica Martin; a great-grandson, Ryan Hall; two sisters, Peggy Lawson and Judy Smith; and the mother of his daughters, Phyllis Smith. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Fred Lawson.

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 20, at Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Russell Cheatham and the Rev. Alfred Jones. Burial followed in Liberty Cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and VFW #9855 combined honor guard.
