BUCKINGHAM, Jan. 20 – Forrest Guthrie, III, 86, of Buckingham, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at his home. He was born May 19, 1924.

He served his country honorably during World War II as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps. During that time, he piloted 60 rescue flights over the Himalayan Mountains to bring crucial supplies to the besieged people of China.

After the war, he ran a dairy farm at his family's home, Rosny, for 20 years, and later worked in banking and real estate. After that time, he yielded himself to God's help and overcame a serious addiction to alcohol. He then worked teaching the skills of farming to prisoners and leading AA meetings for inmates, and spent 15 years restoring Rosny. In his retirement, he lived a quiet life in a county that he loved with a devoted wife and children who doted on him. He was a committed member of Salem United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Charlton Guthrie; twin siblings, Coleman Guthrie and Ann Guthrie; daughter, Mary Lou Guthrie; and son, Forrest Guthrie. “Papa Moo” is also survived by six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Guthrie, and a daughter, Frances Flynn.

Visitation will be held January 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church and where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on January 22.
