FARMVILLE – A Longwood freshman was admitted to the Roanoke Hospital on Saturday, November 27, and has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, according to LU's Vice-President for Student Affairs, Tim Pierson.

“The student is in stable condition and Longwood officials are working closely with the Virginia Department of Health (the lead agency) to help us monitor and evaluate this situation,” Pierson states in an email sent to LU students, parents and to the Herald.

“Those who have been in close contact with this freshman will be contacted directly in regard to evaluation and possible treatment,” Pierson's email states.

Although bacterial meningitis is a relatively rare disease, it is important to note the basic symptoms, which may include high fever, headache, rash, and stiff neck. These symptoms can develop over several hours, or they may take 1 to 2 days, Pierson tells students.

Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, discomfort looking into bright lights, confusion, and sleepiness.

Longwood students were advised that if they have any of these symptoms to please contact the Student Health and Wellness Center or call: 434-395-2102.

The Student Health Center is located on the top floor of the Health and Fitness Center. Enter from the outside entrance on the South face of the building through doors marked “Counseling Center and Health and Wellness Center.”
