Russell Slayton, 84 WWII Veteran Dies May 22

MAY 28 – Russell Overby Slayton, 84, of Farmville, died Friday, May 22, 2009 in Richmond. He was born in Callands, December 24, 1924, the son of the late Joshua Leonard and Annie Mae Aaron Slayton. He was a US Army veteran of WWII and retired from VDOT.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Clarence J. Slayton, Eldridge C. Slayton, Jerry L. Slayton and Bernard A. Slayton; one stepbrother, Lester Boyer; two stepsisters, Catherine Boyer Parker and Mabel Boyer Walton and his stepmother, Patty Odell Slayton.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elner Virginia McFadden Slayton of Farmville; son, Johnny Slayton of Farmville; daughter, Patricia Ann Slayton of Richmond; brothers, Billy C. Slayton of Farmville and Carl Slayton of South Carolina; sister, Peggy Slayton Cartwright Owens of Chesapeake; two grandchildren, Jamie Slayton and Christopher Slayton and one great-grandson, Noah Sprouse.
Funeral services were conducted Monday in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home by the Rev. Sam Weddington with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.
