Carl Leverne (Vern) Miller

Carl Leverne (Vern) Miller, 70, of Arvonia, died Thursday October 21, 2004. Born July 16,1934 to Carl James Miller and Virginia Newton Miller, both of whom preceded him in death, as well as three sisters. Bertha Miller, Doris Mayo and Shirley Chancellor.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Fitzwater Miller; two sons, Anthony Blane Miller and wife Angela of Arvonia and Ronald L. Miller and Terri Stewart of Scottsville; 8 grandchildren, Joshua M. Miller of the U.S. Navy serving in Japan, Sean A. Miller and Aaron T. Miller, Michael Elick and wife Dayna, all of Scottsville, Joseph Keith of Ft. Jackson, S.C., Alex Keith of Arizona, Josie and Carl Stewart Jr., of Scottsville; 2 great-grandchildren Shaylynn and Kyah Elick of Scottsville; 6 sisters, Martha Snoddy and Margaret Gunter, both of Arvonia, Peggy Marion and Susie Cline, both of New Canton, Amanda Morris and Ethel Landes, both of Fork Union; 2 brothers, James L. Miller of Denver, Colorado and Avis Miller of Fayetteville, N.C.; 2 uncles Howell Newton of Arvonia and Marshall Newton of Richmond; 2 sisters-in-law Patricia Dean and husband Lattie of Jamestown, N.C. and Margaret Blankenship and husband Russ of Richmond and many nieces and nephews.

Vern retired in 1993 from Virginia Department of Transportation after 22 years of service. He was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the Taylor Masonic Lodge #17, Centenary, where he was a past Master and past District Deputy Grand Master of Virginia. He was also a member of the Eastern Star, Fork Union for 25 years and a charter member of Harold R. Stevenson Scottish Rite Club and was a past Shriner.

He was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Arvonia, where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday.

Interment with Masonic rites will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday night: at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville.

The family would like to thank Dr. Pritchard and Dr. Morris and all of the nurses who attended Carl for the last three years.
