Goldie Cornell, 95
Of Farmville, Dies
June 28 At Woodland


   JULY 2 – Goldie LaForce Cornell, 95, of Farmville, died peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at The Woodland, Farmville.
   Born in Dante, March 30, 1914, she was a daughter of the late James Perry LaForce and Clementine O’Quin LaForce, who spent the last years of their lives in Prospect.
   She was the sixth of 11 children and is survived by a sister, Bernice LaForce Maillet and husband, Charles of Portsmouth, Ohio; nieces, Pam Brumfield of Farmville, Janet Taylor Fuller of South Boston and Hidden Lake Farm, Prospect, Joan Cox Barry, Marie LaForce Talley, Jacquie Maillet O’Rourke, Charlene Maillet Counts, Julie Maillet Ihardt, Carolyn Moore Weaver, Kim LaForce, Sheri LaForce Byran and Debbie LaForce Pratz; and nephews, Larry Moore, Chip Maillet, and Lt. Col. (Ret) Paul LaForce.
   Mrs. Cornell was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Benjamin Cornell, a proud Army veteran of WWII, and later an executive with VEPCO, Richmond, until retiring to Farmville, and their daughter, Susan Cornell who succumbed to cancer at age 11. Among her nine deceased siblings were local residents, Grace LaForce Cox and Roxie LaForce Taylor.
   Mrs. Cornell was a registered nurse who had a distinguished career in both private and public practice, serving many years as a public health nurse in Petersburg and Richmond and as chief operating room nurse at Southside Community Hospital. She was particularly noted for her compassion and selfless dedication to serve those in need long after normal working hours.
   A graveside service was held on Tuesday at Prospect Methodist Church Cemetery where Mrs. Cornell was laid to rest alongside her beloved husband, Al and only child, Susan in the LaForce family plot, where rest also the remains of her parents and other family members.

Mary Hubbard, 92


   SOUTH CAROLINA, July 2 — Mary Stelline Hubbard, 92, of Caropines, South Carolina died Sunday, June 28, 2009 at her residence following an illness.
   Mrs. Hubbard was born in Brittons Neck, SC a daughter of the late W.S. and Rilla Altman. She was a Wave during WWII and in her service years, she met and married Fielder Hubbard of Rice. They lived 45 years together in Rice before retiring to Surfside Beach in 1990. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Roderick, Johnny, Coley, Marion, and T.J. Altman, and sisters, Annie Foster and Edith Young.
   Mrs. Hubbard is survived by her husband, H. Fielder Hubbard; son, Wilson A. Hubbard of Surfside Beach; and a sister, Neta Campbell of Florence. She will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.
   A memorial service was held Tuesday, at Surfside United Methodist Church with Dr. Scott H. Wachter officiating.

Catherine Jones, 95
Formerly of Farmville,
Dies June 24 At Home


   MARTINSVILLE, June 30 — Catherine Bergendahl (Katie) Jones, 95, of Martinsville, formerly of Farmville, died quietly at home, Wednesday, June 24, 2009. She was born in Roanoke on August 18, 1914 to the late Oscar E. Bergendahl and Cora Emma Cuddy Bergendahl.
   She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville. Katie was the widow of William Edgar Jones and also was preceded in death by two sisters.
   She is survived by two daughters, Catharine J. Nelson and husband, Gary of Martinsville and Judith H. Johnston and husband, Phil of Louisville, KY; a son, William Edgar Jones Jr. of LaGrange, TX; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Lundy of Rocky Mount, NC and Elleen Cairy of Huntington Beach, CA and a brother, Oscar E. Bergendahl Jr. of Erwin, TN.
   According to her wishes she has been cremated and a family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Col. Ret. Gary Lentz, 69
Of Farmville Dies
June 28 At Home

   JUNE 30 — Col. Ret. Gary Dean Lentz, M.D., 69, of Farmville passed away Sunday morning, June 28, 2009 at his residence. He was born May 20, 1940 in the Philippines, the son of the late Col. Ret. Emmert Carl Lentz, M.D. and Anna Lorraine Ley Lentz.
   He graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1962 and was a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
   He served in the United States Air Force for 25 years. He then opened his private practice in Farmville where he worked for 12 years.
   Dr. Lentz was an avid golfer and enjoyed animals and the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor O. Lentz, his brother, Dana Carl Lentz and his grandson, Kevin Michael King.
   He is survived by his sons, John Sevier King of Smithfield, Frank Scott King and wife, Rose of Zebulon, NC and Brian Richard King and wife, Susan of Chester; a daughter, Carla Ann Lentz of Richmond; grandchildren, Christopher Ryan King, Alexis Nicole King, Kaitlin Brooke King, Keegan Hunter Jones and Elle Anneliese Miller; and a sister, Barbara Ann Gresham of Zionsville, IN.
   A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, July 2, from 6-8 p.m. at Puckett Funeral Home.

   PAMPLIN, June 30 — Percy Weldon Bowles, 76 of Pamplin died peacefully at his home Fri-day, June 26, 2009 with his family at his side. He was born March 14, 1933, the son of the late Ronald and Lelia Gallier Bowles of Pamplin. Mr. Bowles served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
   He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois Finch Bowles; three daughters, Jo Anne Wilkins and Rick, Jane Hamlett and husband, Willie and Janet McCraw and husband, Chip; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brothers, Ronald Bowles Jr. of Farmville and Raymond Bowles of Salem and numerous nieces and nephews.
   A funeral service was held Monday at College Church in Hampden-Sydney with interment in the church cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be made to College Church or to Hospice of the Hills.

Dies June 17


   MINERAL, June 25 — David A. Anstine, 78, of Mineral, formerly of Rice, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009.
   He was born March 26, 1931 in Washington D. C., the son of the late Hamond N. and Ruth E. Fisher Anstine. Mr. Anstine served his country in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He was involved with many veteran organizations, as well as volunteering at the V.A. in Richmond.
   He is survived by his sister, Mildred Faulkner and husband, Hugh of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Alva Anstine of Mineral and Ellen Anstine of Lynchburg; three step-children in Georgia; nieces and nephews, Frederick Doe and wife, Barbara of New Mexico, Victoria Dumm of California, Stephen Doe and wife, Joan of Fredericksburg, Ruth Waller of Mineral, Paul Anstine and wife, Gayle of New York, Lynn McConnell of Texas, Alan Anstine and wife, Lynn of Baise, Sharon MacDonald and husband, Bill of Mineral, Donna Gray, Dianne Deal, Richard Anstine, and Ann Johnson and husband, Bill all of Florida, Susan Dana of Ashburn, Nick Anstine and wife, Judy of Springfield, Mary Ellen Gleason of Carrsville and Bill Anstine of Lynchburg; numerous great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Anstine, one sister, two brothers and a brother-in-law.
   A funeral service will be held Monday, June 29, at 12:30 p.m. at the chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment to follow at 2 p.m. in Virginia Veteran’s Cemetery at Amelia. Family will receive friends Monday 11-12:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
