Survival Skills Seminar Set For Oct. 10
Virginia Cooperative Extension will be offering a Survival Skills Seminar on Friday, October 10 at the Cumberland Extension Office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The cost is $35 per person or $30 per person if two or more people.  Lunch and snacks will be provided.  The featured speaker will be Roy Hutchinson.

Twin Lakes Notes Weekend Events

Twin Lakes State Park announces the following weekend events:

Friday, Sept. 12, Interpretive Circle, 11 a.m., “Lake Explorers” – grab a net and see what kinds of creatures are living in our lakes; 2 p.m., “Skin and Bones” – learn about some of the local wildlife in Virginia, 4 p.m., “Archery” -learn about bows and arrows, then put your skills to the test on the range, $5 per person or $25 per group, closed toed shoes required, meet at the Archery Range, located just past the boat ramps; 7:30 p.m., “Meet New Friends Campfire” – sit around the campfire and make smokes, meet at the fire ring behind Shelter 1;

Link Is SPCA Dog Of The Month

The Southside SPCA Field of Dreams September Dog of the month is Link.

Link was rescued from the end of a chain at the home of a of 56 dogs that lived a horrible existence until help arrived. Cutting the “link” of the chain that imprisoned him was the first step in helping him find his happy ever after. The SPCA has promised Link he won’t have to wait long. His hopeful smile indicates that happiness is just around the corner.

Sailor's Creek Takes Part In Day Of Remembrance
On Saturday, September 13, volunteers are invited to participate in a stewardship service project at Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, which will honor the victims of the September 11, 2001 tragedy. To commemorate this National Day of Remembrance, the Park will supervise volunteers in the Adopt-A-Highway roadside cleanup effort along a two-mile stretch of Rt. 617 (Saylers Creek Rd).  Join fellow conservation-minded citizens and supporters of the Park in this project, which also recognizes Fall Stewardship Day.

Pregnancy Center To Hold Walk For Life
The Pregnancy Support Center Walk For Life will be September 13, with registration at 9:30 a.m., walk at 10 a.m. at the Farmville Train Station, 10 W. Third St., Farmville. The two-mile walk for the whole family will be held rain or shine. A free t-shirt will be given for $100 in pledges. Call 391-1011 for further information.

4-H Basic Horsemanship Club To Meet Sept. 20
The Cumberland 4-H Basic Horsemanship and Service Club will be holding its first meeting on Saturday, September 20, from 11 am to 1 pm at Zephyr Stables in Cumberland County.  The service club will be open to Cumberland youth ages 5-13 who love horses and want to have hands-on experience caring for and riding horses.  Participants will get the opportunity to visit Zephyr Stables and meet all the horses that call it home.

Farmville Library To Take Ice Bucket Challenge
Library Staff members of the Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library will take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Friday, September 5, after the library closes at 5 p.m. The Ice Bucket Challenge has helped raise millions of dollars for the ALS Association to fund its present research, care services, and public policy while also considering new projects to move the needle on finding treatments and a cure for the disease.
