Half Marathon Makes Us Proud

Editor, The Herald:

Over the past thirty or so years I have participated in a lot of races...in Lynchburg, Richmond, Danville, Charlottesville, Virginia Beach and DC, and I have never been in a race that was better organized than the recent High Bridge Half Marathon and 5 K. Congratulations and great appreciation from all participants to race director Dr. Sarah Miller and her huge band of volunteers.

Herald News Coverage, Tobacco Plant Editorial, The Town & Fowlkes Cheered

Editor, The Herald:

First, I would like to thank you and your staff for covering so many varied items of local interest. Your paper is a great source of finding out what is happening in this area. And I want to congratulate you on your editorial about the controversial tobacco plants at the Welcome to Farmville sign. You are so right about Farmville being built around the tobacco industry—no one complains about the historic warehouses.

Putin And Russia? What Goes Around...

Editor, The Herald:

Recently, a letter to the editor seemed to cheer Putin of Russia for his current military grab in eastern Europe, while castigating America for acquiring a large portion of western land from Mexico through the Treaty of Guadalupe, which ended the Mexican-American war.

Children From Another Planet

Editor, The Herald:

It appears to be an act of compassion on the part of the USA to accept “alien” children who are fleeing from who knows what. The bacteria that they bring with them may be the same that our immigrant parents brought with them generations ago. History tells us about our forefathers who brought diseases to the new world that killed countless Native Americans, so we really should be careful. We do not want that to happen any of our citizens.

Unplanned Pregnancies- A Loving Response In Farmville

Editor, The Herald:

Amid all the political issues being argued back and forth in the Letters section of the Herald I have felt led to bring up another one with a far more local focus.  The issue of abortion is one that has been argued over and screamed about in almost every civic or journalistic setting one can imagine.  I believe that it is wrong in the eyes of Almighty God to end the life of a precious baby, but that is not my aim with this letter.  For far too long the voices on the far sides of this issue have drowned out the rest of us who seek to reach out to those in need in a way that helps with the abortion epidemic.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Editor, The Herald:

Since there has been a lot in The Herald lately about who did what to whom in the 1950s and 60s and whether there should be yet another apology, I thought that you might find the following, along the line of “actions speak louder than words,” interesting.

'Alien Kids In Our Schools'

Editor, The Herald:

Lately, the US Department of Justice and the US Department of Education have seen fit to order states to enroll undocumented unaccompanied alien kids in our schools without the necessary proof of good health and immunizations that kids who are legitimate US citizens have to provide.

Defending Longwood and Reveley

Editor, The Herald:

As I have been out of town for several weeks, I am late in writing to thank Mr. Furman Joye (Herald, July 23) for coming to the aid of Longwood University.

Vote For Eggleston On Tuesday

Editor, The Herald:

I would like to encourage registered voters in the Town of Farmville to go to the polls on Tuesday, August 19, and vote for Carl Eggleston for At-Large member of Town Council.

Vote For Houghton On August 19

Editor, The Herald:

Probably no duty is more important than that of voting for one’s leaders, and almost certainly none is taken less seriously.  The last Farmville election saw about 20 percent of eligible voters take the time to cast their votes for those who would make their decisions and spend their money for them.

Vote For Martin On August 19

Editor, The Herald:

I would like to encourage all voters in the town of Farmville to support Rhodes Martin in the special election for the open seat on Town Council to be held on Tuesday, August 19th.  As a native son and long-time and active member of the community, his youth and energy will serve him well on the Council. Not only is Rhodes gregarious, convivial, and creative, but Rhodes also has the ability to make everyone who meets him feel comfortable.  He possesses a deep compassion for and awareness of others that is difficult to find.  He will truly listen to all members of the community in a collaborative effort to help Farmville continue to be a wonderful place to work and live.

Vote For Dwyer On August 19

Editor, The Herald:

As a business person who has conducted countless job interviews over the years, I have found that the best person for a job is the one who prepared him or herself for it.  I always ask the question, “Tell me what you know about our company” to see if the interviewee has done his or her homework.  Without exception, the best candidate is the one who did the research ahead of time so they had a framework of understanding for what was going on, how the organization operated, the rules and regulations, etc.  In short, they were better able to hit the ground running.  It meant a shorter learning curve.  It meant they were more productive sooner.

Elect Dwyer On August 19

Editor, The Herald:

When I heard that there was going to be a special election to fill the town council seat vacated by recently elected mayor David Whitus, I was eager to see who would vie for the now open seat.  While there are many qualified candidates that have heeded the call, I ask voters to please exercise their right and vote for Dan Dwyer.

US Is Hypocritical On Crimea

Editor, The Herald:

Russia is castigated in the American press for its recent attempts to control the Crimean Peninsula.

John Wayne's Character Is Needed

Editor, The Herald:

Allow me, if I may comment on the op-ed titled “If John Wayne Were President” of Friday, July 25, 2014. I would like to congratulate the gentleman for his compelling vision of John Wayne’s leadership, and how masterfully he would have performed if he was alive, and held the highest political office in the land. The iconic actor who earned the respect and adoration of millions of Americans, would’ve pushed aside political correctness and spoken the plain truth, with regard to Jihadists waging brutal war on not only non-Muslims, but also on many of their own fellow believers as has been taking place in Syria and Iraq right now.

Vote For Jack Houghton

Editor, The Herald:

Jack Houghton has been my neighbor for well over a decade.  Like myself, he is a “come here,” a term sometimes used in a derogatory way to imply a lack of roots and understanding of this area and its people.  It is true that Jack was not born or raised in Farmville (although he has lived here since 1980), but his education, training, experiences, and interests make him as qualified as any “born here” to fill the at-large position on the Farmville Town Council.
