MAY 21 — SSG Ronald Lambert Eure, 31, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2015 after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
SSG Eure was born on February 8, 1984 in Ahoskie, NC. As a child he dreamed of becoming a Cavalry Scout in the United States Army. In July of 2004, he fulfilled that dream. During his time as a soldier he was deployed twice to Iraq and served at Fort Hood, Fort Knox, Fort Benning and Camp Casey, Korea. He earned numerous medals and honors along the way. SSG Eure was still in service as an active duty soldier at the time of his death. Thursday, May 21, 2015
MAY 21 — Donna Renee Bryant Smith, born December 31, 1981, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Monday, May 18, 2015. She has lived in Buckingham all of her life. She enjoyed life tremendously and believed that time spent with family was the best. Mrs. Smith had a very giving and kind heart. She would do her best to help anyone in any way that she could. MAY 19 — Mary Elizabeth Scruggs Kidd joined her children and husband in heaven Wednesday, May 13, 2015. She was the last surviving child of Willie Archer Scruggs and Nannie Jane Wright.
Surviving are her two daughters, Jenny Ledford and her husband, Larry and Joyce Smith and her husband, Charles; a son-in-aw, Bill Fette; daughters-in-law, Linda Kidd and Brenda Kidd; nine grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Odell and Gladys, six brothers, Luther, William, Anderson, Swanson, Wilbur and Lyndburg, her husband, Charlie, her daughter, Kitty and her sons, Percy and Charles Jr. Tuesday, May 19, 2015
PROSPECT, May 19 — Lawrence Wade Franklin, 72, of Prospect, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2015. He was born in Prince Edward County on March 7, 1943 to the late Robert H. and Hallie Wooten Franklin. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church and retired from Dominion Power.
His favorite past-time was spending time with his granddaughters, riding 4-wheelers, fishing and hunting. He always grew a huge garden and he shared the harvest with many family and friends. Tuesday, May 19, 2015
BURKEVILLE, May 19 — Wilburn Ray Whitus, 75, of Burkeville, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2015. He was born in Wood County Texas on February 1, 1940 to the late Everett and Beatrice Nichols Whitus. He was honored to serve his country in the navy and was a Vietnam veteran. He often stated he had traveled the world by water but was never interested in going back to the beach. He was a simple man who enjoyed just being an “old cowboy” working on the farm with his horses and cows, hunting and fishing. Tuesday, May 19, 2015
CUMBERLAND, May 19 — Janet Hunter Speas, 83, of Cumberland, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2015. She was born in North Carolina to the late Hiram G. and Ada Edwards Hunter on December 26, 1931.
She worked over 30 years in corrections and retired as a captain at Buckingham Correctional Center. She was the first woman captain in the state of Virginia as well as the first woman captain in a maximum-security facility. CUMBERLAND, May 19 — Hazel Pipjunge Speas, 89, of Cumberland, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2015. She was born in Cumberland to the late Albert F. and Lizzy Dowdy Pipjunge on July 22, 1925. She was a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Mrs. Speas worked for Western Union in Richmond before she and her husband moved to Cumberland and purchased the Cumberland Restaurant. Tuesday, May 19, 2015
CUMBERLAND CO., May 19 — Bertha Sanderson Allen, 87, of Cumberland County, departed this life on Thursday, May 14, 2015. Born on September 15, 1928 to the late George and Edith Sanderson, she was a lifelong resident of Cumberland County.
After graduating from Cumberland High School, she attended the State Teachers College at Farmville, now Longwood University. When the love of her life returned from Japan after World War II, she accepted his proposal, and they were married in December 1947. Reared on her father’s farm during the Great Depression, she was accustomed to hard work and often helped her husband with the farm chores. Many a day they could be found checking on their beef cattle or baling hay on a summer’s night. Tuesday, May 19, 2015
