H-SC Music Series To Present Mipso
AMERICAN FOLK BAND MIPSO

AMERICAN FOLK BAND MIPSO

On Tuesday, April 28, the Hampden-Sydney American Acoustic Music Series will present American Folk band, Mipso.  

The band includes Jacob Sharp on mandolin, Joseph Terrell on guitar, Libby Rodenbough on fiddle, and Wood Robinson on double bass. Their music incorporates a three-part harmony and Appalachian influences in their Southern string band sound.

Master Gardener Plant Sale May 2
Heart of Virginia Master Gardeners are shown here potting perennials to sell at their plant sale on May 2 at the Farmville Train Station from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.  Plants for sale will include vegetables, perennials, herbs, annuals, and more.  In addition to the sale of plants three Master Gardeners will present programs.  At 9 a.m. Sue Irving will give a talk on ” Herbs”; at 10 a.m.

Darlington Neighborhood Watch To Meet

The Darlington Heights Neighborhood Watch committee quarterly meeting will be held at the Darlington Heights Fire Department, Monday, April 27, at 7 p.m. A representative from the Sheriff’s Department will be present to give a report of any activity, candidates running in the June primary will be present and Supervisor C.R. “Bob” Timmons will hold a Town Hall meeting immediately following adjournment of the meeting.

Light refreshments will be served. The community is invited.

Bill James To Give Simkins Lecture

When the Boston Red Sox broke its nearly century-long losing streak and won its first World Series in 2004, many people think the team had one man to thank: Bill James.

James is an author and the father of sabermetrics, the in-depth statistical analysis of baseball players to determine what supporters say is a more accurate measure of value to major league organizations. Increasingly adopted by major league teams including the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox, the principles of sabermetrics have changed the face of the national pastime and were featured in the 2011 Oscar-nominated movie Moneyball, which starred Brad Pitt.

YMCA's Healthy Kids Day Set For April 25
On Saturday, April 25, the Southside Virginia Family YMCA is holding a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active. YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families, features games, arts and crafts, free kid’s eye exams, gymnastic and jiu-jitsu classes, geocaching, theater and a basketball shoot out to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home.

On April 26, at Centra Southside Community Hospital, thousands of families and business leaders will join together in the March of Dimes annual march for Babies—the nation’s oldest walk fundraiser honoring babies born healthy and those who need help to survive and thrive.

100+ Women To Meet In Farmville April 23

Would you like to be part of a group that has raised over $88,000 over six years to benefit the community with a time commitment of only one hour every 12 weeks? 100+Women Who Care about Southside does that and is making a difference in the area.

Members meet four times a year for an hour, and each member writes a $100 check at the meeting to a Sunshine community charity/non-profit that she helps select. When checks are combined with those of other members donations can balloon to several thousand dollars.

CVA Offers Workshop On Meditation And Mandalas

“M & M: Meditation and Mandalas,” a Central Virginia Arts workshop will be presented by Cynthia Bergstrom Devlin on Saturday, May 2, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mainly Clay, 217 N. Main Street in Farmville.

Cynthia will introduce the creation of mandalas, “sacred circles” in Sanskrit, using oil pastels. A gentle centering practice will be used to begin each segment of the workshop.
