The Cumberland Christmas Parade committee has announced this year’s winners. The Committee would like to thank all the participants and judges for the parade.
Although the parade had originally been scheduled for December 8, it was postponed a week due to inclement weather. “We are sorry the weather did not cooperate for the first date and that some units could not come on the make-up date,” the committee press release stated. Tuesday, December 17, 2013
Leigh Anna Hurt, of Benchmark Community Bank, presents Hadley Puckett with a certificate for being the YES Club Saver of the Month for October. As the honoree, Hadley was also awarded $10. YES stands for Youth Excited about Saving. The club is open to children ages 5-12. Tuesday, December 17, 2013

Giving seems to be the thread of strength that enables the generosity of the Cardinal Quilt Guild of Prince Edward County. Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Pediatric Unit at University of Virginia Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Prince Edward County 250 Anniversary Celebration, Meals on Wheels, Madeline’s House, and the Hampden-Sydney Fire Department have all received quilts from this committed group of quilting women. Whether it is a quilt to be raffled as a fund-raiser or a collection of homemade quilts to keeps others warm, the Cardinal Quilt Guild of PEC has been supporting the needs of others for over 20 years. The Cumberland parade will go on weather permitting on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. with the same line-up as before. Santa will be available after the parade in the Ashby Antiques Building across from the Exxon to talk to the children. Bring cameras to take pictures of your child with Santa. The Geminid Meteor shower peaks this night, providing a good opportunity to look for shooting stars. The waxing gibbous moon, three days before full, may outshine some of the dimmer meteors but will itself serve as an interesting object to view through binoculars and a telescope.
