Eight local high school students recently took part in the Southside Electric Cooperative’s Washington Youth Tour.
Eight high school students representing Southside Electric Cooperative (SEC) participated in the 50th Annual National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Washington Youth Tour, from June 15-19. The students, all rising seniors from high schools within SEC’s service area, joined 1,600 other participants from electric co-ops across the nation to learn about the legislative process, the importance of civic involvement and how to better serve their local communities. Experience Holliday Lake as you never have before! Join park naturalists any Saturday in the month of August at 7 p.m. for a guided tour of the lake in the quiet atmosphere as dusks settles. After having a quick Canoeing 101 tutorial the group will venture out to hear the history of the park and the surrounding lands. As night settles there will be an opportunity to hear and witness some of the cherished wildlife. The tour lasts approximately 1 ½ to 2 hours. Thursday, July 31, 2014
The Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library’s movie series continues through the month of August, welcoming families to enjoy a good movie and free popcorn. Family movies will be shown on Fridays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Teen movies are shown on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. On August 1 the movie The Croods. On Saturday, July 26, the Carter G. Woodson High School, Buckingham, Class of 1964 had its 50th anniversary reunion at the site of the old S.J. Ellis Elementary School, Dillwyn, now known as Ellis Acres Memorial Park.

The “33rd Annual Country Showdown” presented by The Haley Auto Mall is coming to The Five County Fair, Friday September 19th at 6PM in the Varner Building. WVHL “Kickin’ Country” will once again host America’s largest country music talent search and radio promotion. Approximately $200,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded nationwide including the Grand Prize of $100,000 cash to the National Winner, presented at the National Final televised special.
