Local High School Students Take SEC Youth Tour
Eight local high school students recently took part in the Southside Electric Cooperative’s Washington Youth Tour.

Eight local high school students recently took part in the Southside Electric Cooperative’s Washington Youth Tour.

Eight high school students representing Southside
Electric Cooperative (SEC) participated in the 50th Annual National
Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Washington
Youth Tour, from June 15-19. The students, all rising seniors from
high schools within SEC’s service area, joined 1,600 other
participants from electric co-ops across the nation to learn about the
legislative process, the importance of civic involvement and how to better serve their local communities.

Holliday Lake Offers Sunset Tours In August
Experience Holliday Lake as you never have before!  Join park naturalists any Saturday in the month of August at 7 p.m. for a guided tour of the lake in the quiet atmosphere as dusks settles.  After having a quick Canoeing 101 tutorial the group will venture out to hear the history of the park and the surrounding lands.  As night settles there will be an opportunity to hear and witness some of the cherished wildlife.  The tour lasts approximately 1 ½  to 2 hours.

Farmville Library Offers Free Family Movies
The Farmville-Prince Edward Community Library’s movie series continues through the month of August, welcoming families to enjoy a good movie and free popcorn. Family movies will be shown on Fridays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Teen movies are shown on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. On August 1 the movie The Croods. For the week of August 4, teens can see Ender’s Game and everyone is welcome on Friday for Turbo. Woodson High School Holds 50th Class Reunion

On Saturday, July 26, the Carter G. Woodson High School, Buckingham, Class of 1964 had its 50th anniversary reunion at the site of the old S.J. Ellis Elementary School, Dillwyn, now known as Ellis Acres Memorial Park.

Sixteen class members, one faculty member and their guests were in attendance.

High Bridge Offers Guided Access Service
As some park visitors are unable to complete the one mile hike to get to High Bridge due to the inconvenience of the location, they now have the opportunity to enjoy the scenic and historic High Bridge with a guided access service.

First Friday Band
The First Friday events will continue on Aug. 1 with the band Gypsy Road. The local group has performed in this area and throughout the state. The band’s sound, classified as rock, includes both covers and original songs.

Kevin Jordan, a marketing consultant from Farmville and member of the Duct Tape Marketing Consultant Network, has recently started a daily small business podcast providing simple, affordable, and practical tips to small business owners. The free video podcast, entitled Small Business Marketing Minute, is currently the third-ranked video podcast in iTunes in the “New and Noteworthy” section of the business category.

The 33rd Annual Country Showdown Coming To Farmville

The 33rd Annual Country Showdown coming to Farmville.

The “33rd  Annual Country Showdown” presented by The Haley Auto Mall is coming to The Five County Fair, Friday September 19th at 6PM in the Varner Building. WVHL “Kickin’ Country” will once again host America’s largest country music talent search and radio promotion. Approximately $200,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded nationwide including the Grand Prize of $100,000 cash to the National Winner, presented at the National Final televised special.
