Logging In Buckingham County (2)

The impact of the timber industry is very evident in Buckingham County. The County seal has three logs, a pine tree, and wood on either side of the date 1761. The most well known portrait of the courthouse, painted by Martha Pennington Louis, shows three trees surrounding the Jeffersonian structure. The large amount of tractor-trailers that pass through the Town of Dillwyn, both empty and carrying wood, is a testament to the impact as well. The county has historically been a leader in timber production, according to H. Gwynn Tyler, a forester specialist with the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF). "There are approximately 373,401 acres of land in the county. A little over 317,000 acres, or approximately 84 percent, is forest land," Tyler explains in a report provided to The Herald. "This is 17,000 more acres of forest land than 20 years ago," he further explains. For many years, timber has played a very important role in the economy of Buckingham County. "In 2013, there were 44 different logging crews operating in the county," Tyler cites in his report. The latest stumpage value data, or the price paid to landowners for wood that's harvested on their property, shows that in 2011, forest landowners in Buckingham received over $12.4 million for the timber, according to the report.
