The Main St. Mall Fire: July 14th 2003
More than 60 firefighters from
all seven Prince Edward County fire departments fought and contained a July
14 fire at the Main St. Mall. The interior of the Main St. Mall, which
contained eight businesses, was declared a total loss by fire marshall and
Farmville fire chief Tim McKay, who also concluded the fire was not set and
likely began in the building's air-handling units. Fire crews were praised
for being able to keep the blaze from spreading to adjacent buildings,
including the Farmville police department and Town office, in addition to
Main Street businesses. No firefighters were seriously injured.
