   Stanley Frank Cook, 44, of Amelia, formerly of Winston-Salem, N. C. left here to be with the Lord on Monday, September 24, 2007. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia, of 18 wonderful years of marriage, his daughter, Bonnie and son, Justin Cook and wife, Callie all of Amelia, his loving father-in-law, Curtis Carter, brother, Jay Moser and step-brother, Donnie Kuehne, step-sisters, Kelly Barnett and Pam Mays, father, John Cook, step-father, Donald Kuehne all of Winston-Salem, N. C. He is preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Kuehne of Winston-Salem.
   He was employed by Gemini, Inc. in Farmville, Va. where he was the Plant Manager over formed letters. He enjoyed his job and loved his employees. He was a wonderful husband and father to our children and we will miss him so much. His battle with Colon Cancer took him away from us too early but we will soon be reunited in heaven together. His faith in our Lord Jesus Christ was tremendous and that is what carried our family through these hard times. Stan has touched so many people’s lives with his testimony and the way he was al-ways there to go that extra mile to help out someone in need. His overpowering love and spirit will live on in our lives as well as our friends and loved ones.
   Mr. Cook was an ordained deacon of Graceland Baptist Church in Powhatan, Va. where funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. with interment in the church cemetery.
   Visiting will be on Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St., Amelia, Va.

Joe P. (Jack) Moss III, 83

Dies September 20


   BUCKINGHAM, Sept. 25 – Joe P. (Jack) Moss III, 83, of Buckingham, died peacefully on Thursday, September 20, 2007. He was the son of the late Joe and Flossie Moss of Buckingham.
   He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy Boatwright Moss; two daughters, Diane M. Andrews and husband, L.E. Andrews Jr. of Farmville, and Donna M. Glenn and husband, John R. Glenn of Lanexa; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen M. Crafton of Blackstone; a brother, Charles S. (Pete) Moss and wife, Norma of Midlothian; and several nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Singleton S. Moss.
   Mr. Moss was a member of Maysville Presbyterian Church and served in both the European and Pacific theaters of operation in WWII. He was the founder of several Jax Big Beef restaurants in the 70s and 80s and later the Jax Family Restaurant at Sprouses Corner, before his retirement.
   A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Maysville Presbyterian Church with a private interment.
   Contributions may be made to the Buckingham County Public Library or Maysville Presbyterian Church.

   ALTAVISTA, Sept. 25 — Ruby Lee Lann Bryant, 65, of Altavista, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2007 in the Lynchburg General Hospital due to complications from diabetes and kidney disease. She was the wife of her beloved husband, Elmo J. Bryant Sr. for 47 years.
   Born October 1, 1941, in Buckingham County, she was a daughter of the late Nick Lann and Ruby Whorley Lann. She was a member of the Meade Memorial United Methodist Church. Ruby enjoyed life and loved being with her family, more especially her grandchildren. Her two favorite times of the year were Halloween and Christmas. Her favorite past time was relaxing and being on the farm. She enjoyed spending time with her two canine companions, Jake and Ginger.
   In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son; Elmo J. “EJ” Bryant, Jr. and wife, Lisa of Rustburg; a daughter, Karen Bryant Haupt and husband, Stephen of Altavista; four grandchildren, Trevor and Somer Haupt and Jessie and Zac Bryant; two siblings, Herbert Lann of Dillwyn and Elizabeth Lann Puckett of Indiana. Also surviving is Jo Anne Hartless Bower of Palmyra, who Ruby thought of as a daughter; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her twin brother Edgar Lann and her additional brothers, James Lann, Nick Lann Jr., Frank “Gene” Lann and Ray Lann; three sisters, Florence Lann Wiseman, Mabel Lann Simpson and Betty Lann Stinson.
   A memorial service was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 23, at Meade Memorial United Methodist Church by Pastor George Hatmaker and Buddy Bryant.

Dies September 23

   SEPTEMBER 25 – Stella Staton Price, 71, of Farmville, formerly of Dillwyn, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon Wilbur Staton and Tiny Agee Staton; a son, Lynn Butler Price, and was the widow of James Herman Price Jr.
   She was a retired administrator of Weyanoke Retirement Home and a member of Enon Baptist Church.
   Mrs. Price is survived by a son, Jimmy Price and wife, Kathy of Farmville; daughter, Sue Jones and husband, Joe of Dillwyn; seven grandchildren, J.P. and Jerald Price, Sara, JoAnn, and Conley Jones, Kara Kitchen and Jared Queen; sister, Barbara LeSueur of Dillwyn; four nieces and nephews, and a special friend, John St. Sing.
   Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Enon Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

   SEPTEMBER 25 — Mrs. Vanessa Harris Stokes, 42, of Farmville passed away Thursday, September 20, 2007 in Richmond after a lengthy illness. She was born December 22, 1964 in Prince Edward County, the daughter of John M. and Vanessa Perkins Harris.
   She is survived by her parents, her children, Jennifer Green, Stuart Lewis, Christopher Clark, Damien and Jacob Stokes and her sisters, Kathy Tassell and Gayle Hott.
   A funeral service was held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment in Westview Cemetery.

Rex E. Kershner, 85

Dies September 18


   SEPTEMBER 20 — Rex El-wood Kershner, 85, of Farmville, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at his residence. He was born May 10, 1922 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, the son of the late Robert Harold and Mildred Mae Mcintyre Kershner. He was the husband of Jean Kershner of over sixty years. He served in the United States Navy during WWII.
   He is survived by his wife, his children, Rex Kershner and wife, Sandy of Georgia, Karen Frattali and husband, George of Pennsylvania and Connie Kershner of Farmville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert Kershner and his sister Nadine Chaney.
   A private service will be held in Maryland at a later time.

   Mrs. Rickman is survived by two sons, Donald L. Rickman of Midlothian and Roger D. Rickman of Sandy Hook; two sisters, Nellie Hodges and Gracie Handy, both of Farmville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews and a lot of friends especially at her church home, Northside Gospel Chapel in Victoria.
   Graveside services were held Thursday (today) at 11 a.m. at Trinity Memorial Gardens.

   He is survived by his wife, Brenda Bolden Woodson; a son, Michael Swann (Rachael); a daughter, Pamela Hatcher (Reginal); a step-daughter, Juanita Ayers; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Delma, Raleigh (Elaine) and Clarence Woodson; six sisters, Gertrude Allen (Charlie), Dorothy Crawley (Charles), Shirley Brown (Robert), Ruth Lewis (Moses), Betty Mosby (Elmus), and Gracie Harrison (Samuel); three sisters-in-law, Denise Harrison, Clarissa Mosley and Deliah Mosley; three brothers-in-law, Dennis and Larry Mosley and Gregory Harrison; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; two devoted friends, Sterling Farrara and Sherman Carter.

   ABILENE, Sept. 20 — Frank Powell Overby, 75, of Abilene, died Tuesday, September 18, 2007. He was born on May 25, 1932 in Halifax County.
   Surviving are his wife, Frances Overby; sons, Alvin B. Powell of Texas, Danny Overby and wife, Julie of Keysville, Dennis Overby and wife, Rita of Keysville; daughters, Rebecca F. Powell of Farmville, Rhonda J. Anderson and husband, Jay of Burkeville, Lisa C. Tillman and husband, Donald Clark of Williamsburg, and Sandy Flynn and husband, Danny of Keysville; nine grandchildren, Cary Wertheimer, Chris Wertheimer, Cody Chenault, Ben Roselle, Madeline Tillman, Christopher Clark, Chase Flynn, Dustin Flynn, Casey Flynn; a brother, Ernest Overby and wife, Doris; sisters, Mildred Shelton and husband, Charlie and Kitty Pembleton.
   Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 21, in Mt. Nebo Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

   DARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Sept. 20 — Elizabeth Rayer Borum Englebright, 53, of Darlington Heights, died on Tues-day, September 18, 2007. She was the wife of John Edward Englebright and had three step-children, Sheldon and wife, Tina, Allen and wife, Leah Englebright and Leigh Ann E. and husband, Phil of Oxford, NC.
   Mrs. Englebright is also survived by her mother, Dorothy W. Borum, brothers, Robert M. and wife, Frances and James F. and wife, Elsie Borum of Amelia County; a sister, Donna L. and husband, Marshall Thackston of Darlington Heights; three nephews; one niece and one great-niece. She was preceded in death by her father, James M. “Buster” Borum of Amelia County.
   She was an active participant at Bethlehem United Presbyterian Church near Abilene and was last employed by Hampden-Sydney College and had many faithful friends there.
   Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 1 p.m. from Bethlehem United Presbyterian Church, Abilene, with interment at the Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Oxford, NC.
   The family will receive friends on Thursday (today) from 6-9 p.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home.

Charlie E. Taylor
Local Resident
Dies September 15


   SEPTEMBER 20 — Charlie E. Taylor Jr. was born to Charlie E. Taylor Sr. and Elto (Evans) Taylor on January 1, 1941 in Prince Edward County. His parents and one brother preceded him in death. Mr. Taylor lost his fight with lung cancer on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at his home with his wife and sisters by his side.
   At an early age he was converted, baptized and joined the First Baptist Church in Farmville, then later moved his membership to Petersville Baptist Church, where he was ordained as a Deacon in 2006.
   Mr. Taylor was educated in the Prince Edward County Public School system, graduating from Robert R. Moton High School in Farmville and was a member of the Prince Edward County Elks Lodge #269.
   He retired from Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home in Farmville after more than 40 years of service. He was a bus driver for Prince Edward County Public Schools for over 20 years and one year at Cumberland County Public Schools.
   Mr. Taylor had a love for singing and music. He sang with many choirs. He was an original member of the Royal Supremes Gospel Singers of Farmville for over 30 years.
   He leaves to cherish loving memories: his devoted wife, Jeraldine Royall Taylor; a son, Jerome; step-daughter, Jaleesa; a daughter-in-law, Lisa; two grandsons, Jerome and Marcus; two sisters, Bernice Johnson and Dorothy Abraham (Edouvil); two brothers, James “Puff” (Ruth) and Robert (Nina); mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary A. Royall; five brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.
   A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 22, at 1 p.m. in the Prince Edward County High School Auditorium, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice. Public viewing at the funeral home will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
