RICE, August 14 – Howard Leon Ferguson, 81, of
Rice, died Thursday, August 9, 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Ferguson; his daughter, Elaine
Bott and husband, Ken of Chesapeake; grandchildren, Shelly Simpson and husband,
Shawn of Moyock, NC, Steve Bott and wife, Dawn of Chesapeake, and John Bott and
wife, Wendy of Chesapeake; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Pat Bates of
Portsmouth, and Christaline Basham of Jonesboro, TN; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the Bethel Christian
Fellowship, Farmville, with interment at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens in
Suffolk, with military honors.

Monday, August 6, 2007, a son of the late William S. and Julia W. Trent.
Mr. Trent was a retired electrical contractor.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Mylum Trent; sons, James William
(Bill) Trent of Amelia and Joseph Wesley Trent and wife, Katina of Rice; sister,
Garnett T. Hodges and husband, Jesse of Farmville; brothers, Herbert S. Trent
and wife, Cynthia of Richmond, and Latane D. Trent (Bo) and wife, Ella of
Farmville; brother-in-law, Luther W. Dix of Burkeville; granddaughter, Summer
Trent of Buckingham; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice T. Dix.
A memorial service was conducted Saturday at Pisgah Baptist Church
in Rice.

Dies Tuesday, Aug. 7
BUCKINGHAM, August 9 – William A. “Bill”
Maxey, 73, of Buckingham, died at his home on Tuesday, August 7, 2007. He was
the son of the late Leonard F. Maxey and Etta Self Maxey.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth M. Hunter and four
brothers, Leonard F. Maxey Jr., Herbert E. Maxey Sr., Julian A. Maxey, and James
E. Maxey.
Mr. Maxey is survived by his wife, Ann; six children, Charlotte
Hudgins and husband, David, Walter Harvey “Junie Bug” Edwards Jr. and wife,
Angie, Barbara Edwards, Louis Edwards and wife, Kathy, Mike Edwards and wife,
Scotty, Mary Ann Robinson and husband, Walt; sisters, Mary M. Patteson and
Josephine M. White; brothers, Robert S. Maxey and F. Henry Maxey; 18
grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to his loving and devoted niece, Audrey Ragland.
He spent all his life raising award winning black angus cattle on
Muddy Creek Farm.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, August 11, at 2 p.m.
at Sharon Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the Dunkum
Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

AUGUST 9 – Nettie Blanche Staton
Derrenbacker Barlow, 88, died Wednesday, August 8, 2007 in Farmville. Born in
Buckingham County on December 21, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Lee
Staton and Lucy Melinda Jones Staton.
She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Ruby, Frances,
Robert, Gordon, Annette, as well as her first husband, Frank Derrenbacker, and
her second husband, Mason Barlow; a son, Frederick Lee Derrenbacker, and a
daughter-in-law, Laura Z. Derrenbacker.
Mrs. Barlow was a well known businesswoman, running her own
beautician salons, and also owned and operated Farmville Fashion Wigs. She was a
member of Heritage Baptist Church, various garden clubs, and supplied roses from
her own garden for floral displays, clubs, and nursing homes. She was also an
insurance and sales representative for nearly 50 years.
Survivors include her sons, Larry W. Derrenbacker and wife, Jean of
Richmond, Ellis Derrenbacker and wife, Carolyn of Lynchburg, and Frank Stephen
Derrenbacker of Farmville; six grandchildren, Beverly Schulz and husband, Adam
of Glen Allen, L. Jonathan Derrenbacker of Midlothian, Chad J. Derrenbacker of
South Riding, James Todd Derrenbacker and wife, Johanna of Lynchburg, and twins,
Stephanie Lynn Derrenbacker and Cheryl Lori Derrenbacker of Farmville; and
great-grandchildren, Emma and Jackson Schulz.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 11, at 11 a.m. with
graveside interment at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Buckingham.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Friday at Shorter Funeral
Home.

children, Richard A. Messenger of Quinton and Shirley M. Martin of Cumberland;
10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Tuesday at Payne Memorial United
Methodist Church, Cumberland.
Interment will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Terra Alta Cemetery,
Terra Alta, WV.

Katherine M. Williams
PORTSMOUTH, August 7 – Katherine Marshall
Williams, born November 29, 1917, received the Grace of Our Lord and Savior and
passed into eternal peace on the evening of Tuesday, August 1, 2007. She lived
most of her life in Wise.
Following the death of her husband, Ray W. Williams, she lived with
her daughter, Barbara W. George, in Cumberland. The last three years of her life
were shared with her daughter, Carolyn W. Kauffman in Portsmouth.
Her years were spent as a homemaker and as a loving wife, mother,
grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a Baptist by faith.
Surviving are daughters, Carolyn W. Kaufman and husband, Tom of
Portsmouth, and Barbara W. George and husband, Stewart of Cumberland; sons, Gary
Williams and wife, Gail of Norton, and James A. Williams and wife, Glenda of
Midlothian; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Virgil
Marshall.
There was a graveside service at Powell Valley Memorial Park in Big
Stone Gap, on Saturday, August 4.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the charity of choice.

PROSPECT, August 2 —Mrs. Virginia
Brisentine (O.T.) Smith, 94 of Prospect passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2007 in
Farmville. She was born July 9, 1913 in Botetourt County, the daughter of the
late Ira and Ida Davis Brisentine. She was the widow of Otway T. Smith.
She was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church. Mrs. Smith
worked all her life as a farmer and was a regular at the Saturday Lynchburg City
Market for over 50 years. She also had a great love of all flowers.
She is survived by sons, James I. Smith and Otway T. Smith Jr. both
of Prospect; daughters. Jenny S. Ballou of Farmville, Ida S. Layne and her
husband, Norman of Cullen, Iris S. Gilliam and her husband, Tommy of Pamplin and
Sallye S. Covington and her husband, Johnny of Pamplin; 11 grandchildren, 16
great-grandchildren and a sister, Louise Doss of Powhatan. She was preceded in
death by a brother, Albert Brisentine, a grandson, Norbet D. Layne and a
great-granddaughter, Brittany Rollins.
A funeral service was held Thursday, August 2, at 3 p.m. at
Prospect United Methodist Church with Interment in the church cemetery.

Frieda Baker, 79
Of Blacksburg
Dies July 28
BLACKSBURG, July 31 — Frieda Arlene
Dansberger Baker of Blacksburg, died Saturday, July 28, 2007. She was 79. She
was born in Arlington on February 8, 1928, she was the daughter of the late
Vernon Lorenzo and Frieda Anna Dierolf Dansberger. Her surviving siblings are
Gloria Dansberger Keet of Huntington Beach, CA and Paul Mangold Dansberger of
Highland Springs. Deceased are her brothers, Vernon Dierolf Dansberger, Luther
Dierolf Dansberger, Harold Vernon Dansberger, and her half-brother, Raymond
Walker Locke, formerly of Gainesville.
She was the beloved wife of her husband of 59 years, Moorman “Zip”
Shepherd Baker.
Frieda’s life-long passions were her family (especially the
children) and friends, gardening, the church community, and VA Tech Football.
She was a member of the Class of 1949 at Longwood College where she majored in
Elementary Education and then taught in Cumberland and Montgomery counties for
over 20 years. She is a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Montgomery
County RSVP, XYZs, and the VA Tech Agronomy Retired Wives Association. She
taught Sunday School for many years at Blacksburg United Methodist Church, and
worked in the church nursery and with young acolytes.
Frieda treasured her friends in the Blacksburg United Methodist
Women’s Circle #4. She volunteered with the Blood Mobile, at Warm Hearth, and
babysat for mothers attending Bible Study. Frieda was an avid gardener up until
the very last days of her life with large vegetable and flower gardens. Frieda
also loved and kept in touch with the community where she grew up near Columbia.
She loved to attend the September Homecomings at Oakwood United Methodist
Church, her childhood church, where she and Zip could reminisce and enjoy being
with their many family members and friends in the area. They were looking
forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary next March 2008 at
“Liberty Hall” farm in Columbia, the family home of Zip and foster home of
Frieda and her brother, Paul. In the last year, Frieda and Zip had begun an
extensive renovation of the family home in Columbia.
Frieda is survived by her son, Meade Hite Baker and
daughter-in-law, Anita Grindstaff Baker of Perkasie, PA, by her son, Moorman
Shepherd Baker Jr. and daughter-in-law, Anna Marshall Baker of Blacksburg, by
her son, Randolph Marshall Baker and daughter-in-law, Karen Killian Baker of St.
Simons Island, GA, by her daughter-in-law, Vicky Kipps Baker of Blacksburg,
(wife of deceased son, Stuart Madison Baker) and by her son, Vernon Maury Baker
and daughter-in-law, Lisa Layman Baker of Charlottesville. Frieda is also
survived by 12 grandchildren, which are the children of the son, Meade Hite
Baker (Meade Hite Baker IV, Mary Cora Baker, Thomas Vernon Baker, Tyler Kirk
Baker and Moorman Henry Baker), the children of son, Moorman Shepherd Baker Jr.
(Jacquelin Alden Baker and Anna Haley Baker), the children of Randolph Marshall
Baker (Randolph Marshall Baker Jr.), the children of deceased son, Stuart
Madison Baker (Stuart Madison Baker Jr. and Armsted Gallion Baker), the children
of son, Vernon Maury Baker (Maury Layman Baker and Keely Addison Baker). In
addition, Frieda is survived by three great grandchildren, which are the
children of Meade Hite Baker IV (Emanual Antonio Baker Castro and Aderyn Sage
Baker) and the child of Mary Cora Baker (Ethan Luke Pappas).
Funeral services were held Tuesday, (today) July 31, at 11 a.m. in
the Blacksburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Morris Fleischer
officiating.
Another funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 1 at 11 a.m.
in the Oakwood United Methodist Church, Columbia, with burial following in the
church cemetery.

Dunnavant Jr., 60, of Victoria, died July 23, 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia H. Dunnavant of Victoria;

Matt Sheets of Church Road; six grandchildren, Holly Diane Evans, Johnny Neal

Mr. Dunnavant served his country in the United States Army and was

JULY 24 – Billy Ralph (B. R.) Martin, 74, of
Farmville, lost his battle with cancer on Friday, July 20, 2007 at his home.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Martin; a daughter,
Tammy Garrett and husband, George of Prospect; a son, Donald Martin of
Farmville; two granddaughters, Crystal Tappen and husband, Kevin of Farmville,
and Kashyn Martin of Cullen; four great-granddaughters, Erica and Amber
Williamson, and Stephanie and Sabrina Tappen; and a great-grandson, Avery Martin
Garrett.
Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Carl James Martin
and Ada Marie Martin, and a brother, Hugh Martin.

BLACKSTONE, July 24 – Shirley C. Palmore,
76, of Blackstone, passed away Friday, July 20, 2007. She was the daughter of
the late Mary L. and G. Garland Palmore.
She retired after 40 years of service from Sprint.
Ms. Palmore is survived by four sisters, Helen Frances Butterworth,
Vivian Johnson (Dillard), Ercelle Drewey (Max), all of Blackstone, and Dudley
Atkinson of Richmond; a niece, Barbara B. Scott; eight nephews, Greg Dewey;
Jonathan, Tim, Ted, and Jeff Atkinson; and Randy, Chris and Scott Johnson; 12
great-nieces and great-nephews, Jeremy “Kenny” and Cameron Scott; Andrew Dewey;
