   BUCKINGHAM, May 10 – Martha Jones Waldrop, 54, of Buckingham, went to Heaven to be with her Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, May 9, 2007.
   She was born February 26, 1953, the daughter of the late Brady and Gertrude Jones of Buckingham.
   She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Mark Waldrop of Buckingham; her mother-in-law, Helen Waldrop of Ashland; her faithful friend/caregiver, Peggy B. Moore of Buckingham; three sisters, Betty J. Woodie and husband, Larry of Farmville, Patsy J. Scruggs and husband, Johnny of Dillwyn and Linda J. Bickford and husband, Rick of New Canton; one brother, Brady Jones Jr. and wife, Cynthia of Buckingham; 15 nieces and nephews, Melissa Heinly of Farmville, Mary and Joe Church of Richmond, Samantha and John Scialdo of Myrtle Beach, SC, Brad and Tanya Bickford of New Canton, Suzanne and Joe Snoddy of Swansboro, NC, Jay and Stephanie Jones, Seth and Jessica Jones, Patrick Jones all of Buckingham, Lauren Jones of Nashville, TN; nine great-nieces and nephews, Madelyn Blair, Emma Grace and Wyatt Brady Bickford of New Canton, Sarah Jordan, Ryan Joseph, Robert Wesley and Thomas Alexander Snoddy of Swansboro, NC, Carly Nicole Ball and Noah Reid Jones of Buckingham. She is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and many special friends who stood by her through her struggle with Multiple Sclerosis.
   Martha was a Business Education teacher at Buckingham High School for 15 years. She was actively involved in a number of school, community and church activities which included advisor for the Hi-Y, a Christian organization; advisor for the FBLA ( Future Business Leaders of America); as well as taught homebound students during her teaching career. She was an active member of Maysville Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Mission Friends leader, pianist and librarian.
   Martha graduated from Longwood College in 1974 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Education and received a Masters of Science degree in Business in 1978. She was a member of ADK an honor organization for Education majors, and recently was given a lifetime honor award for ADK. She volunteered with the American Heart Association; “Friends of the Library” of Buckingham where she enjoyed presenting story time to pre-school children. Until her death she continued to have regular visits, cards and phone calls from faculty she taught with and students she taught 15 years ago.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Maysville Baptist Church with interment in Buckingham Community Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at Maysville Baptist Church.
   Memorial donations may be made to Maysville Baptist Church Building Fund or Hospice of the Piedmont.

    Mrs. Wildonger was a gifted artist and loved to sing. She was the sunshine of our lives, al-ways making us laugh and not take things too seriously.

    BURKEVILLE, May 10 – William L. Carter, 80, of Burkeville, passed away Monday, May 7, 2007.
    Born in Appomattox, he was the son of the late James W. and Evelyn B. Carter.
    Bill was a U.S. Navy veteran in World War II. He was a member of Crewe Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and served as deacon and usher for many years. Also, he was a member of the Gideons and the Masonic Lodge 147 in Burkeville and Scottish Rite Temple. He owned and operated W. L. Carter Insurance Agency before retirement. Prior to that he was employed by N&W Railroad.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois Carter; a daughter, Janice Jennings and husband, Craig of Midlothian; a son, Mike Carter and wife, Michelle of Raleigh, NC; five grandchildren, Carter, Bailey and Mallory Jennings and Evan and Brenna Carter; a sister, Jean C. Tabb; two nieces and a nephew.
    Funeral services were held 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Crewe Baptist Church with Dr. Ben Powers officiating. Interment followed in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Burkeville.

Albertine T. Lancaster, 82
Of Maryland
Dies April 24

    MARYLAND, May 3 - Albertine Thomas Lancaster, 82, of California, MD, died Tuesday, April 24, 2007 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Leonardtown, MD, after an extended illness.
    Born on July 16, 1924 in New York City, NY, Albertine was the daughter of the late Agatha Estridge Thomas and Alfred Thomas of St. Kitts, West Indies.
    Albertine was a devout Catholic. She was baptized and grew up as a member of the St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church in New York City. At the time of her death she was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Lexington Park, MD.
    Albertine was educated in the public schools of New York City. After graduating from high school, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College. Tina’s graduate studies include a Master of Social Work degree from Fordham University School of Social Work, and certification in the field of mental health from Fordham’s Post Graduate Center for Mental Health.
    Albertine’s career as a clinical psychiatric social worker in New York City includes her work at the Foundling Hospital, Children’s Aid Society, and Child Welfare Agency. She served as Adjunct Professor of Social Work at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the Bronx Community College in the Bronx, New York.
    After her marriage to John G. Lancaster in 1971, Albertine moved to St. Mary’s County, Maryland and worked for 16 years at the Department of Social Services as a supervisor for child welfare, including foster care and adoptions. “Tina” was an active member of the National Association of Social Workers, and the Academy of Certified Social Workers. She was instrumental in helping to organize the first Child Welfare Day in St. Mary’s County. Albertine’s professionalism and leadership in the field of social work was acclaimed at the local, state and national levels. She encouraged all with whom she worked to expand their horizons, and thus made accessible to the citizens of St. Mary’s County an improved social work organization.
    After retirement from the Department of Social Services, she was appointed by governor Harry Hughes as Southern Maryland’s first African American woman representative to the Maryland State Board of Education, where she served the maximum 10 year period.
    In addition to her professional career, she was active and took leadership roles in a variety of community and civic organizations. Albertine was a life time member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She was founder, charter member and a past president of the Southern Maryland Chain Chapter, The Links, Inc. which will celebrate 25 years of service to the community this year. She served as president of the Loretta House Board of Directors, which established the first group home for boys in the county; she was past president of the Margaret Brent Business and Professional Women’s Club, past president of the St. Mary’s County Board of Library Trustees and a member of the Three Oakes Board of Directors. Tina was active in the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters, the Democratic Club, the NAACP, the Delicados, and the organizer and past president of the Merry Wives Club. Tina was a recipient of varied community honors and awards.
    Tina was a loving and supportive wife and mother. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, John G. Lancaster of California, MD, former St. Mary’s County Commissioner; her son, John G. Lancaster, Jr. of San Francisco, CA; her daughter, Shirley Elaine Gholston of Greenbelt, MD; grandson, Bruce J. Lancaster (LaShawn); great-grandson, Miles Lancaster; godson, Gerald Grayson and a host of relatives and friends.
    In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her two sisters, Lydia E. Thomas and Evelyn T. McBean, niece, Thea McBean Custis, and nephew, Vaughn J. McBean. “Tina” as she was affectionately called was the youngest child and the last member of her immediate family line.
    A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Lexington Park, MD. Interment was held Tuesday, May 1 in St. Raymond’s Cemetery, Bronx, NY.
    Expressions of remembrance may be made through donations to the Southern Maryland Chain Chapter, The Links, Inc. for the Albertine T. Lancaster Memorial Scholarship.

    MAY 3 – James Goodrich Watson, 91, entered into the joy of his Lord on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in Farmville.
    He was born in Darlington Heights on July 30, 1915, the son of the late Willie A. Watson and Sudie O. Watson of Darlington Heights.
    He is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 50 years, Hilde Kastl Watson; four sons, James W. Watson of West Palm Beach, Florida, Thomas S. Watson of Heathsville, Eric S. Watson of Woodstock, Vermont and Evan L. Watson of Falls Church; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Samuel E. Watson of Merritt Island, Florida; one sister, Sue W. Powell of Farmville and a host of nieces and nephews, including Hunter R. Watson of Farmville.
    Mr. Watson was a 1935 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and a 1939 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. He retired from Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company (Verizon) in 1978.
    The family will receive friends at Shorter Funeral Home in Farmville from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening (Thursday). Funeral services, officiated by Pastor lee Copeland, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Spring Creek Baptist Church in Darlington Heights.

    MAY 3 – Diane Hall Carwile, 59, of Farmville, died Tuesday, May 1, 2007.
    She is survived by her husband, Robert C. Carwile; daughters, Deborah Hall of Lynchburg, Rebecca Allen and husband, Buddy of Appomattox; son, John Hall and wife, Robin of Appomattox; stepdaughter, Rebecca Hosner of Rice; step-sons, Robert C. Carwile Jr., Robert O’Conner both of Farmville, Russell O’Conner of New Mexico, Larry O’Conner of Cumberland and Charlie O’Conner of Farmville and 22 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her step-daughter, Alma O’Conner.

    He served as pastor to College Church and chaplain and bible instructor at Hampden-Sydney College from 1966 to 1972.
    He is survived by his wife Carol; daughters Mrs. Amy Woodruff (Richard) Marietta, GA; Mrs. Meg Sestak, Suwannee, GA and Mrs. Elizabeth Vassey (David Emmerichs), Los Angeles, CA; stepdaughters Mrs. Jennifer Bibbs (Mark), Wilson, NC and Mrs. Sarah Reed (Corey), Wilson, NC and stepson Samuel LaRoche (Kelli), Wake Forest, NC; brother Dr. John W. Vassey (Nancy), Raleigh, NC; sister Mrs. Bess Loftis, Brevard, NC, sister-in-law Mrs. Elinor Vassey, S.     POWHATAN, May 1 - Martha Holt Kelly of Powhatan died Thursday, April 26, 2007.
    Survivors include her husband, Larry Eugene Kelly; two daughters and spouses, Laura Kelly and Stuart Barnett and Linda Kelly and Keith Seay both of Powhatan; two sisters, Analyze Holt and Richard Parrish of Midlothian, Joyce Holt and Charles Rigsby of Gum Spring, Bobby and Doris Greene Holt and Gary and Sandy Mullins Holt all of Powhatan; one sister-in-law Margaret Clark Holt of Powhatan; four grandchildren, Jordan and Ryan Barnett and Nicole and Lauren Seay all of Powhatan. Many other family members that will miss her. She was preceded in death by her parents the Rev. O. H. and Beatrice Adams Holt and one brother, the Rev. Mitchell Ray Holt of Powhatan.
    The funeral service was held 2 p.m. Monday at the Full Gospel Church Powhatan. The Rev. Ernest Duty and Rev. Mose Short officiated. Interment followed in church cemetery.

    MAY 1 – Mrs. Mary Lou Raymond, 64, of Farmville, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2007, at her residence.
    She was born September 13, 1942 in Petersburg, the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Adams Moorefield. She was the wife of Richard Raymond Sr.
    She was co-owner and operator of Raymond’s Dry Cleaning for 27 years and owner of Mary Lou’s Monogramming for the last 16 years.
    In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons, Richard Raymond Jr. and wife, Sandra, of Farmville, and Robert Edwin Raymond Sr. and wife, Pamela, of Farmville; brother, Kenneth E. Moorefield and wife, Lynn, of Rocky Mount, NC, and their sons, Kenneth Jr., William and Steven; grandchildren, Katelyn Raymond, Robert Jr., Joseph and Alexandra; stepbrother, Melvin R. Welch of Florida and his children, Kim and Joey; brother and sister-in-law, Lee and Sandy Aubin and their children, Ed, Mike, and Jennifer; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
    A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice.

    KENBRIDGE, May 1 – Thomas Ray Rutledge, 91, of Ken-bridge, died Thursday, April 26, 2007.
    Mr. Rutledge was a retired plumber and electrician.
    He is survived by a son, Thomas R. Rutledge Jr. and his wife, Shannon of Powhatan; a daughter, Thelma R. Adkins and her husband, Merle of Kenbridge; a stepdaughter, Estelle H. Vaughan of Lynchburg and numerous grandchildren.

   APRIL 26 - Paul Preston Hicks, age 92, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2007 in Farmville.
   He was born in Atkins, Virginia, the son of the late C. P. Hicks and Maye Halsey Hicks.
   He was a graduate of Atkins High School and Marion College. He taught for two years in Smyth County. He was a veteran of World War II, having served three years in the United States Air Force in the Pacific Theater of Okinawa and Japan. He was a retired merchant and co-owner of the former Thriftway Shopping Center in Giles County. His wife is the former Lucile Atkins. They had one son, Dr. Paul P. Hicks Jr., a dentist in Farmville.
   He is survived by his wife, Lucile Atkins Hicks of Farmville; one son, Dr. Paul P. Hicks Jr. and wife, Patricia of Farmville; two grandchildren, Paul P. Hicks, III (Trey) of Richmond, and Laura H. Coombe and husband, Craig, of Charlottesville; one great-grandchild, Lleyton Coombe; one sister, Rosamond H. Coulthard of Pearisburg; two brothers, Leon C. Hicks of Northern Virginia and Dr. R.H. Hicks and wife, Agnes of Sun City West, Arizona.
   Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 28, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel, Marion, with Dr. Fred Austin officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Marion.
