   PRINCE GEORGE, Nov. 14 -CW3 Ret. James Stewart Metcalf, 63, of Prince George, passed away Sunday, November 12,2006.
   He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Christine A. Metcalf of Prince George; his daughters, Dorothy K. Metcalf and Stacey R. Turner and husband, Virgil G. Turner Jr. and their two daughters; his father, William R. Metcalf; two brothers and their wives and one sister and her husband. He was preceded in death by his mother, Katherine G. Metcalf.
   He was a 25 and one half year Army veteran and a member of the Burke Masonic Lodge No. 147, AF&AM.
   The family will receive friends Wednesday at Nelsen Funeral Home, Gould Chapel, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home followed by a private interment.

Dies Monday

   DILLWYN, Nov. 14 - Sarah LeSueur Lee, 88, of Dillwyn, passed away at her home on Monday, November 13, 2006.
   She was the daughter of the late Joshua Lee LeSueur and Alice Branche Dunsford LeSueur. She was the widow of Sgt. Everett Harry Lee.
   She is survived by her sisters, Pearl L. Stone of South Hill, Nannie L. LeSueur of Dillwyn and Ruby L. Powers of Ashland and many nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Lee was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fire Department.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cedar Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Tuesday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

Dies Wednesday

   PROSPECT, Nov. 9 - Preston L. "Pete" Vanderpool, 68, of Prospect, died Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at his home.
   He is survived by his wife, Betty Vanderpool; two daughters, Dusty Hudson and husband, Russell of Prospect and Kathy Lewis and husband, Anthony of Farmvllle; two sons, Preston L. Vanderpool Jr. and wife, Barbara of Cullen and Preston Chad Vanderpool and wife, Jennifer of Richmond; one sister, Betty Jane Fox and husband, Charlie of Buckingham and six grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Zeena Vanderpool and two brothers, Raymond and Wilbur Vanderpool.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville. Burial will be private.
   The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

    PROSPECT, Nov. 7 - Joseph Foster Glenn, of Prospect, passed away at Southslde Community Hospital in Farmville on Friday, November 3, 2006 at the age of 95.
    Mr. Glenn was a native of Prince Edward County and was an active member of the Prospect Methodist Church.
    He is survived by his wife, Dorothy and sons, Richard Foster Glenn of Northport, Alabama and Stephen Kyle Glenn of San Francisco, California.

Obituary
of
Warren Newton Ayers

     Warren Newton Ayers, 89, died peacefully and went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 4, 2006. He was born in Cumberland County on April 4, 1917. Warren was born to the late Linwood Ayers who died in 1969 and the late (Molly) Mary Susan Huddleston Ayers who died in 1961. Warren was preceded in death by his brother Arthur Claude Ayers who died in 1929, by his brother Linwood Daniel Ayers who died in 1996, and by his sister Norma Blanch Ayers Jones who died in 2004. Survivors include one brother, James William Ayers, Sr., and one sister, Etta Namoi Ayers Graves Rickman. Also surviving Warren's memory are five nieces and nephews, Virginia Ayers Robinson and Willie Duncan, Elizabeth Anne Ayers Boyer and her husband Daniel, (Jimmy) James William Ayers, Jr. and his wife Ann, Claude Douglass Graves and his wife Beverly, and (Molly) Mary Katherine Fields.
     Warren was a dedicated, active, and charter member of the Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church in Cumberland County where he received salvation, joined the church, and was baptized in Fin Pond in Cumberland in 1932. Warren served as a Deacon in the church and he also served on the Board of Trustees. At Warren's death, he was the oldest living continuous member of Fitzgerald Church.
     Next to loving the Lord, his church, and his family, Warren had a passion for farming. Warren was also one of the oldest living farmers in Cumberland County.
     For many years. Warren and his two brothers, (James and Lin), were known as the "'Ayers Boys," and some even caned them the triplets. The three brothers were nearly inseparable! The Ayers brothers farmed jointly as one unit raising corn, wheat, tobacco, hay, dairy, and beef cows. Almost everything was done together, from going to the same church, to farming, to traveling to the tobacco warehouse, and to the cattle markets.
     Warren Ayers was a tenderhearted, sweet, lovable, devoted Christian man; he lived a simple, Godly life. He will be deeply missed by his family, church, and friends.
     Warren's fifteen great nieces and nephews include Gayle Page Robinson and her fiancé Harry ADen Leonard, Lisa Diane Robinson ADen and her husband Robert, Little Mack Hamilton Robinson, Jr., John David Ayers and his wife Merrilee, Donna Renee Ayers and her fiancé Steve Tomlinson, Stephen Boyer, Lori Graves Manton and her husband Darrly, Linda Katherine Graves Layne and her husband Daron, Anna Graves and her fiancé Jim Christie, Danny Dandridge and his wife Lisa, Terri Dizon, Richard English, Rebecca Fields Shumaker and her husband Raymond, Eddie Fields and his wife Linda and Timothy Fields. Additionally surviving Warren's memory are his thirteen great, great nieces and nephews, Logon ADen, Shane ADen, Toby Layne, Austin Black, Autumn Marston, Ashley Marston, Savannah Dizon, Brandon Shumaker, Katlin Shumaker, Kenley Fields, Kiley Fields, Hadley Cole, and Harris Cole.

    BUCKINGHAM, Nov. 2 - Edna Belle Agee Duty, 87, of Buckingham, died Tuesday, October 31,2006.
    She was the daughter of the late Nick and Anna Goin Agee. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, W. Taylor Duty Sr.
    Survivors include six children, W. Taylor Duty Jr. and his wife, Frances of Richmond, Diane Darlene Fernandes and her husband, Joe of Winston-Salem, NC, Donnie G. Duty and his wife, Loretta of Staunton, Dennis W. Duty and his wife, Doreen of Buckingham, Debra A. Duty and her husband, Ronnie Bolton of Ashland and Denise D. O'Meara and her husband, Stephen of Louisa; eight grandchildren, Bradley Duty, Katherine Leon, Christie Orta, Jonathan Duty, Evan Fernandes, Braden O'Meara, Callan O'Meara and Isabelle O'Meara; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jeanette A. Green of Mechanicsville, Marguerite A. Farmer of Richmond and Paulette A. Farmer of Glen Allen; one brother, Oscar W. Agee of Goochland; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws including a special sister-in-law, Edith D. Dunkum and her husband, Eldon of Dillwyn and loving caregiver, Denise W. Stout and her staff. She was preceded in death by five brothers.
    Mrs. Duty was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother, sister and neighbor. She was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Buckingham.
    Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

    Mr. Brinson worked for Wayne Rhoten Tree Service in Powhatan and was an avid fisherman, hunter and NASCAR fan.

    DILLWYN, Nov. 2 - Virginia Caul Leonard, 87, of Dillwyn, died peacefully, Saturday, October 28, 2006 with her family by her side.
    She was born in Buckingham County, on August 11, 1919, a daughter of the late James W. Caul and Mollie Banton Caul. She was preceded in death by her child, George, her husband, Bernard Lewis Leonard on February 18, 1990 and her brother, Walter Caul.
    She is survived by a son, James Bernard Leonard and his wife, Kathy and their six children, Danny Ray, Donna, Crystal, James, Jonathon and Laura of Dillwyn; a daughter, Mary Lavelle Leonard Kelly and her husband, Kenneth of Dillwyn and their two sons, Scott Kelly and his wife, Lori and their three children, Ashley and her fiancée, Ricky, Brandon and Hunter of Dillwyn and son Keith and his wife. Heather and their two children, Taylor and Trevor of Dillwyn; daughter, Laura Leonard Sargeant and her husband, Bryan of Vincennes, Indiana and their five boys, Chris and his wife, Shalyn, Jason and his wife, Sarah, Kevin and his fiancée, Crissy, Nathan and Danny; son.     Mrs. Leonard retired after 40 years of service from the Garment Factory. She was an avid and enthusiastic quilt maker and she made a quilt for every member of her family including her great-grandchildren. She also made quilts and donated them to various charities. She was her happiest when she was serving her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all because she loved to help and care for others.
    Mrs. Leonard was an active member of Arvonia Christian Fellowship Church in Arvonia.
    Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in St. Andrews Baptist Church Cemetery.

    BURKEVILLE, Nov. 2 -Juanita Hines, 85, of Burkeville, died Tuesday, October 31, 2006 at her residence.
    She is survived by one son, Jones Edward Hines and wife, Vickie of Amelia; five daughters; Dorothy Mae Napier of Jetersville, Lottie Bowman and husband, Corbett, Betty Faye Coleman and Catherine Hutchinson and husband, Tommy all of Burkeville and Susan Ann Quig of Green Bay; two sisters; one brother; 20 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Hines, one son, Sammy Hines Jr. and one daughter, Daisy Ann Hines.
    Funeral services will be held Friday in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, with interment in Mount Pleasant Church Cemetery.

Sally Clark Crooker, 65
Farmville Native
Dies in New York

   EAST FISHKILL, NY, Nov. 2-Sally dark Crooker, 65, a Dutchess County, NY resident since 1977 and formerly of Montrose, NY and Virginia, died suddenly on Monday October 30, 2006 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, NY.
   For 20 years. Sally was a computer programmer for I.B.M. until retiring in 2005. She had previously worked for American Airlines in White Plains, NY. She was a member of the Hopewell Reformed Church in Hopewell Junction, NY, and was very active in the church's music programs.
   Born in Farmville on May 29, 1941, she was the daughter of the late James H. and Clarice Obenshain Clark. In 1963, Sally graduated from Westhampton College in Richmond. On October 15, 1966, she married Joseph Harrington Crooker in Farmville. Her husband predeceased her on January 25, 2004.
   Sally is survived by her son, Dr. Joseph C. "Jay" Crooker of Durham, NC; daughter, Cheryl Holsberry and her husband, Ray of White House, TN; her grandchildren. Ell Joseph and Shelby Rae Holsberry. She was predeceased by her brother, James Boyce Clark.
   Calling hours will be held Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the McHoul Funeral Home Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction, NY. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Hopewell Reformed Church, 143 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction, NY.

    RICE, Oct. 31 - Cora Pembelton Grey, 86, of Rice, went to be with the Lord on Friday, October 27,2006.
    She was born May 26, 1920 In Rice, a daughter of the late Quantry Cabel and Bernice Pembelton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Grey, daughter, Phyllis Grey Borum and son, W. C. Grey Jr.
   She is survived by a daughter, Frances Giles and her husband, Fred of Rice; son. Jimmy W. Grey and his wife. Kim of Jetersville; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Grey was a longtime member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church where funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday. Burial followed in the Epworth United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Tammy M. Jamerson,
35, of Dillwyn passed away on
Thursday, October 19, 2006.

    She is survived by her husband Troy B. Jamerson and her two children, Dalton and Skyler. Tammy is the daughter of Bob and Frances Murphy also of Dillwyn.
    She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Dillwyn that stood by her completely during her lengthy illness.
    She is also survived by two brothers, Todd and Lynn Murphy, grandmother, Mildred Murphy, and numerous aunts and uncles. She is preceded in death by a grandfather, Robert E. Murphy, a grandmother, Elizabeth Edwards, and a grandfather, Walter Edwards,
    Tammy would like to acknowledge her friends at State Farm in Charlottesville where she was employed for 13 years. They have stood by her with their utmost support.
    Funeral services were held Sunday, October 15 at 2:00 pm at Buckingham County Middle School, Rt. 690 with interment in the Dillwyn Town Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Helping Hands of First Baptist Church of Dillwyn or the family.

Obituary

Mrs. William Peterson

   Mrs. William Peterson, formerly Marjorie Meinhard Meador, passed away on October 24 at the age of 89, lacking 15 days of reaching 90. She is survived by her daughter, Deirdre, a graduate of the University of Virginia and a resident of New York City; and her brother, Robert Meador, presently of Mexico City.

   Marjorie was a native of Cumberland County, graduating from John Randolph High School in 1933. She was the daughter of Mrs. Esther Meador Stratton, a long-time correspondent of the Farmville Herald and a friend of Mr. J. B. Wall, then editor. Mrs. Stratton is still remembered by many for her varied activities in Centenary Methodist Church, including that of organist.

   Marjorie began her career as a registered nurse in Washington, D.C. In 1942, she married William Peterson, a partner in a construction company. The couple lived for many years on the Patuxent River, in Maryland.

   The family moved to Boca Raton, Florida, in 1963, and Marjorie was a realtor there in her later years.

   Marjorie's demise came after a protracted illness, during which time she was lovingly cared for by her faithful daughter, Deirdre.

   She will be interred at Centenary Methodist Church on Saturday, October 28, at 3 P.M.

Linda Rodgers, 90
Cumberland County
Native, Dies Thursday

    WEST VIRGINIA, Oct. 26 - Linda Allen Walker Rodgers, 90, of Martinsburg, WV passed away Thursday, October 26, 2006.
    Born in Cumberland County, May 28, 1916, she was the daughter of the late W. Benjamin Walker and Sarah Garnett Walker.
   Graduated from  Longwood College, Farmville, with additional studies at the College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia, she began her career in teaching in Bedford County and taught in Charlottesville, before coming to Martinsburg in 1945 with her husband, Decatur H. Rodgers Jr. She taught at Winchester Avenue School for almost 20 years retiring in 1986.
    Mrs. Rodgers was a longtime active and faithful member of First Presbyterian Church with a special interest in children, teaching in the Sunday School and Cradle Roll Chairperson for over 40 years. She was honored with a Life Membership in the Presbyterian Women.
    She was Life Member of WV Congress of Parents and Teachers, Life Member of the Berkeley County Jaycee-ettes, former member of the Junior Civic League, participant in Literacy Volunteers of America, member of Berkeley County Association of Retired School Employees. member of Salvation Army Auxiliary, member of Friends of the Library, member of the Apollo Civic Theater, the Berkeley County Historical Society and member of the Boarman Arts Center.
   Survivors include two sons, Decatur H. Rodgers III and his wife, Barbara, of Amherst, and Benjamin A Rodgers of Winston-Salem, NC; a daughter, Sarah Ann Rodgers of New York, City and two granddaughters, Elizabeth A. Rodgers of Athens, GA and Virginia Rose Rodgers of Winston-Salem, NC, and a number of nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Decatur H. Rodgers Jr., who served the community as City Attorney for Martinsburg and in a private law practice; a brother, W. Benjamin Walker Jr. of Cumberland; two sisters, Jane Walker Womack of Farmville and Virginia Walker Giles of Richmond.
   Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 220 South Queen St., Martinsburg, WV on October 28 at 10 a.m. with graveside rites to follow at Falling Waters Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Rufus T. Burton will officiate.
   The family will receive friends at Brown's Funeral Home on October 27 from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
   The family suggests donations to the First Presbyterian Church, 220 South Queen St, Martinsburg, WV or to Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle, 101 W. King St., Martinsburg, WV 25401.

    NEW CANTON, Oct. 26 - Revery Earl Newton, 90, of New Canton, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2006, at his home with his family by his side.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Garrett Newton and a son, Bobby Earl Newton.
    He is survived by his children, Juanita Hill and husband, Robert, Charles Newton, Barbara Smith and husband, Jimmy and Dennis Newton and wife, Karin all of New Canton, Christine Dunivan and husband, Howard of Columbia, Peggy Gough and husband, Larry of Farmville and Margie Childress and husband, Abner of Powhatan; a daughter at heart, Joan Elaine Robertson of Scottsville; a devoted grandson, Charles (Charlie Boo) Newton; two sisters, Katherine Cook of New Canton and Clarice White of Richmond; one brother, Lee Newton of Florida and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
    Graveside services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Rocky Mt. United Methodist Church Cemetery.
    The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.
    Memorials may be given to Buckingham County Rescue Squad or to Welcome Wesleyan Methodist Church Building Fund.

   NEW CANTON—Lula B. Maxey, 88, of New Canton, died Tuesday, October 24, 2006.
   She was born July 9, 1918 in Buckingham County, the daughter of the late Charles Edward Bryant and Polly Elizabeth Gunter Bryant. She was the widow of William Jennings Maxey Jr.
   She is survived by five daughters, Lillian Purdy of Lynchburg, Hilda Newton of New Canton, Rose Tyree of Lynchburg, Elizabeth Elder of Lynchburg and Ruby Pearl Nettles of South Carolina; six sons, William J. Maxey of Scottsvllle, Tommy Maxey of Scottsville, Charles Maxey of New Canton, Howard Maxey of Lynchburg, John Maxey of Cartersville and Kenneth Maxey of New Canton; 21 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two children, Doris E. Maxey and Roy Lee Maxey.
   Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Maple Grove Pentecostal Church with interment in the church cemetery.
   The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

At Abilene

   OCTOBER 26 - A funeral service for Alberta Royster was held Wednesday, October 11 at 2 p.m. at St. Douglas Baptist Church with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Royster died Friday, October 6, 2006.
   She was born May 12, 1919 in Charlotte County, the daughter of the late Rebecca Noble. She was the widow of Deacon Van Royster.
   She is survived by her sons, Van Royster Jr. of Abilene, Booker "Charlie Lee" Royster (Annie) of Farrell, PA and the Reverend Franklin Royster of Hampden-Sydney; a brother, Johnny Stancil of Norfolk; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Edward and a daughter, Barbara Ann.
   Wilson Funeral Home, Keysvllle, was in charge of arrangements.

   She is survived by two children, Michael and Rodshawnda Marshall of Meherrin; nine sisters and brothers, Helen Goldman (Robert) of Darlington Heights, Jessie Robinson (Debbie) of Baltimore, MD, Senie Mae Fowlkes of Farmville, Johnette Humphrey and Pauline Anderson both of Baltimore, MD, Claudette Allen (James) of Abilene, Sylvia Frances (Sam Simms) of Meherrin, John Francis (Mary Ford) of Burkeville, Brenda Evans (George) of Meherrin, Clay Marshall (Pearlene) of Keysville, Edward Marshall of Baltimore, MD, Bernice Hargrove of North Carolina and Theresa Marrow of Keysville; two aunts, Viola and Annie Haskins both of New York City. NY; one uncle, Howard Haskins of New York City and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
   Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Douglas Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery.
