    BURKEVILLE, Oct. 3 - Betty James Tucker Dix, 70, of Burkeville, widow of James Kent Dix, passed away Monday, October 2,2006.
   She is survived by a daughter, Helen Elizabeth Dix Morris of Burkeville and two grandchildren, Heather Elizabeth Morris and Kevin "Lee" Anderson Jr.
   Mrs. Dix, an insurance agent, formerly worked for L. S. Hillsman Insurance Company and retired from Don Gantt Jr. Insurance Agency in Farmville.
   Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Crewe Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Tuesday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, Crewe.

   He is survived by his wife, Betty Craft Sharpe; a stepson, James Robert Baker of Maryland; three sisters, Cora Lee Booth of Farmville, Pauline Thomas of Richmond and Phyllis Able of Fredericksburg; one brother, John Sharpe of Hampton and a niece, Edna Sharpe of Dillwyn.

   He was born August 13, 1921 in Bristol, a son of the late Glen Vencil and Margaret Brooks Vencil. He was the widow of Callie Mildred Smith Vencil.
   He is survived by a daughter, Margaret Anne V. Hartless of Buckingham; three sons, Clarence C. Vencil Jr. of Buckingham, James G. Vencil of Knotts Island, NC and Curtis W. Vencil of Buckingham; four sisters, Leola Vencill of Virginia Beach, June Biglin of Ohio, Oneita Mason of Bristol and Mattielee Cox of Tennessee; three brothers. Gene T. Vencill of Bristol, Ralph Vencill of Norfolk and Jack Vencill of West Virginia; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

David A. Knowsley, 66
Of Gladstone
Dies Friday

   GLADSTONE, Oct. 3 - David Arthur Knowsley, 66, of Gladstone, passed away Friday. September 29, 2006 at his home. His wife, Christina Broking Knowsley, survives him.
   Born February 3, 1940, in Jersey City, NJ, he was a son of the late Robert and Elsie Purdy Knowles. Mr. Knowsley was the retired owner of Handling Equipment Rebuilders.
   Three grandchildren, Renae Knowsley, Randall Ayers and Dustin Knowsley, also preceded him in death.
   In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, David E. Knowsley and wife, Brenda E. Knowsley, of Gladstone, Christina C. Knowsley and Cathy K. Marshall, both of Hershey, PA; and three brothers, Robert Knowsley, Warren Knowsley and Danny Knowsley; seven grandchildren, Chris, Katie, Shannon, Krysta, Tori, Elissa and Kristen, other relatives and friends.
   A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, at Dr. Andersen's residence next to Andersonville Animal Clinic, 1451 Dixie Hill Rd. Dillwyn.

   OCTOBER 3 - Michael J. Taperino, 85, of Farmville, died Monday, October 2, 2006 In Chester.
   Mr. Taperino was the owner and operator of Heifner's Sales and Service, in Farmville, for many years.
   He is survived by two daughters, Rita T. Smith of Powhatan and Michelle A. Hawkins of Richmond; two sisters, Rosie Gionta and Tessie Sticciatie both of Arizona; grandchildren and their spouses, Dwayne and Amy Smith of Midlothian, Jennifer S. and Jay Barden of Powhatan, Daniel Ross Hawkins of Locust Grove and four great-grandchildren.

   SEPTEMBER 28 - A memorial service was held Saturday, September 23, at Jamestown Presbyterian Church, Rice, to honor the memory of Melissa Beth dark Fowler, who passed away on Monday, September 11, 2006 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, North Carolina, following a brief illness. The Rev. William Willson was in charge of services.
   Mrs. Fowler was the wife of Lt. Col. Gary S. Fowler (Ret.) and the daughter of Billy C. and Ruth Ann Clark of Farmville.
   She is also survived by two sons, Benjamin and Timothy; one daughter, Jodie and a brother Billy and his wife, Bridget of Green Bay.
   Funeral services were held earlier in Catlettsburg, Kentucky.

Professor, Dies

   ASHEVILLE, NC, Sept. 26 -Earl "Jim" Rubley, 82, died Thursday, September 21, 2006 at St. Joseph's Hospital.
   He was born November 27, 1923 in Davenport, Iowa to the late Emma A. Hillebrand and Arthur H. Rubley. He is also preceded in death by his beloved son Mark Steven Rubley.
   Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Frances Ratcliffe Rubley; daughter, Janet Rubley Gay and husband, Phill of King George; son. Guy Rubley and wife, Kelly Small of Vienna; brothers, Robert and Charles Rubley both of Davenport, Iowa; sister, Patricia Bear also of Davenport, Iowa; grandchildren, Phillip Gay. Heather El-Ahwal, Kathryn Knight, Anna Rubley, Mark Rubley and William Rubley; and two great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Nicholas.
   Mr. Rubley was a veteran of the US Army and served in WWII in the South Pacific. He retired as a geography professor from Longwood University. He received his formal education at St. Ambrose College, University of Tennessee and University of Kentucky. He was involved in many volunteer groups and activities that included Combat Infantry Association, VA Hospital, UNCA Seniors College, Junior Achievement, and youth sports.
   A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 25, at St. Lawrence Basilica with Father Frank Seabo officiating.

Native, Dies Friday

   RICHMOND, Sept, 26 - Mary Madeline Dunkum, of Richmond, died Friday, September 22, 2006 at Ruxton Health Center.
   Born May 8, 1913 in Buckingham County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Sworth Dunkum and Ella Dowdy Dunkum. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Claude Linwood Dunkum and Arthur Preston Dunkum and her sisters, Edith Dunkum Hill and Dorothy Dunkum Thomas.
   She was a graduate of Dillwyn High School and worked for many years at Famous Foods of Virginia (Nabisco).
   She is survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Dunkum of Richmond and Lois Dunkum Benshoff of Ronceverte, WV; several nieces and nephews and a close friend and caregiver, Deborah Barber.
   A graveside service was held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Rocky Mount Methodist Church Cemetery in Dillwyn, with the Rev. Tasi Perkins officiating.

   She is survived by her brothers, C. E. Jones of Farmville and John R. Jones of Oilville; her sisters, Mary Krohn of Midlothian, Wilda Cashion of Farmville, Estene Murray of Midlothian and Carolyn Scott of Tullahoma, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Marie Groseclose, 87
Retired Teacher,
Dies Tuesday

   SEPTEMBER 19 - Mabel Marie Crabtree Groseclose, 87, died Tuesday, September 19, 2006, in Farmville.
   She was born in Ceres, VA, July 29, 1919 and was the daughter of the late Estel Peter (Doc) Crabtree and Hattie Jane Tilson Crabtree. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald Lee Groseclose; a sister, Dorothy Jane Crabtree Riel of Aberdeen, MD; and two brothers, Howard and J. R. Crabtree both of Ceres.
   She is survived by a daughter, Donna Maria Groseclose of Farmville; a sister, Bonnie Elizabeth Crabtree Boothe of Pulaski; a brother, Andrew Bane Crabtree of Ceres; and a number of nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Groseclose was a graduate of Ceres High School, Ceres, Marion Junior College, Marion, and Radford University, Radford. She also took graduate classes at the University of Virginia and Longwood University.
   Mrs. Groseclose had a 36-year career as a teacher. She taught and coached basketball at Liberty School and Ceres High School. She also taught at Washington High School and Pittsylvania County Schools. For 23 years she was employed by the Prince Edward School Foundation; where she served as headmistress at Rice and then moved to Farmville to teach mathematics and fourth grade at the Prince Edward Lower School.
   During her lifetime Mrs. Groseclose was active in many organizations. For many years she was organizer of volunteer workers for all area Red Cross bloodmobiles. She was active with the American Cancer Society and for many years held the office of treasurer with the local chapter of the AARP. She was a dedicated member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Ladies' Aide Society and the church choir. She also served as a volunteer for the Southside Community Hospital Auxiliary. Her VDOT Adopt-A-Highway, Jamestown Road in Cumberland County, will never be the same. At the time of her death she was co-owner of Arabians Destiny, an Arabian horse farm in Farmville.
   Visitation will take place on Wednesday, September 20, from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Puckett Funeral Home. The funeral will be held on Thursday, September 21, at 2 p.m. from St. John's Lutheran Church with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.

   September 19 -- Seymour, TN, Glenn Manis, 86 of Seymour, Tennessee, died suddenly on Sunday, September 17, 2006.
   He was born on February 25, 1920. He was a US Army veteran of World War II and retired from Blalock and Sons after more than 30 years. Glenn was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Seymour.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, David Arthur and Lola Mollie Manis; sister, Betty Manis Carr; brothers-in-law, Fred Canand Luke West.

Louis H. Herschler, 97
Of Farmville

   SEPTEMBER 19 - Louis H. Herschler, of Farmville, died Sunday, August 27, 2006, after a brief illness. He was 97.
   Mr. Herschler graduated from Ohio State University in 1932 with a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering. He spent most of his professional life in Hawaii in groundwater research and in the planning, construction, and operation of underground and surface water supplies. He was a partner in the engineering firm of Herschler and Randolph. In Hawaii, he was also involved in solving environmental problems in the sugar industry. He was a life member of several professional organizations most notably the ASCE, AWWA, and AAWA. Active in civic affairs, he served on several state and city commissions and was a member of the Rotary and Lions Clubs and several Chambers of Commerce.
   He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Crute Herschler, and one brother, Hayes Herschler. He is survived by a sister, Irene H. Wolgamot, of Alexandria; a brother, Dale C. Herschler, of Lakeside, CA; and a number of nieces and nephews.
   A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 23, at 2 p.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home in Farmville. A private burial will be held at Westvlew Cemetery in Farmville.

Anne Holmes McCoy

Anne Holmes McCoy was killed in a tragic automobile accident in Amelia County on September 6, 2006. A memorial service will be held at the Farmville Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 17. The family will greet friends at the church following the service. Funeral arrangements are being made by Puckett Funeral Home. Dr. Joseph E. McCutchen will officiate.

Anne was born in Farmville on April 14, 1947. She was predeceased by her parents, Alexander B. Holmes Jr. and Evelyn Gilliam Holmes and is survived by her husband, William Micheal "Mike" McCoy who is recovering from injuries received in the accident.

She is also survived by her brother, H. Alexander Holmes of Raleigh, North Carolina, his wife Charlotte, two nephews, Scott and Bryan Holmes and niece, Cheryl Holmes Hibbs, her husband. Brad and their children, Alex and Elena.

Anne graduated from Prince Edward Academy in 1965 and received an associates degree from Averett College. She was a member of Farmville Presbyterian Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and active in volunteer activities. She worked for many years at Virginia National Bank in the Norfolk area, and most recently at Southside Community Hospital serving as volunteer coordinator and working in both the pharmacy and radiology departments.

Anne was a loving wife, sister, aunt and friends and will be remembered for her warm heart and generous spirit. She loved Farmville and the opportunity to live in her childhood home with Mike.

Dies Tuesday

   PROSPECT, Sept. 14 -Aubrey DeBell Young Jr., 61, of Prospect, died Tuesday, September 12, 2006, at McGuire Veterans Hospital, Richmond.
   The son of Aubrey DeBell Young and Sarah Tietjin Young, he was born in Schaefferstown, PA, on May 7, 1945.
   After serving in the US Coast Guard from 1964-1968, he earned a BS degree in biology from Longwood College.
   Mr. Young is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Hunter Aubrey and Sue Young, of Troutville; his daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Elizabeth DeBell Young Bass and Michael Bass of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Caroline Young of Charleston, SC; and his friend and former wife, Diane Coffey Young; two brothers, John Augustus Young of Prospect and Peter Bogart Young of Mascot. Mr. Young was preceded in death by his twin brother, Frederick DyDecker Young.
    The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at the home of John Young, 2182 Harris Creek Road, Prospect.

Jamerson; his children, Linda Hawkins of Arvonia, Robin Lynn Davis of Dillwyn, Kolin Jamerson of Baltimore, MD and Marlene Rogers of Dillwyn; three sisters, Florence Verbecke of New Jersey, Ruby Duncan of Powhatan and Louise Drewry of Baltimore, MD; two brothers, Emmett Jamerson of North Carolina and Andrew Woody Jamerson of Powhatan; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Dillwyn, with interment in the Jamerson Family Cemetery.
   Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, was in charge of arrangements.

Dianne Morris, 55

   SEPTEMBER 12 - Dianne Harris (Lynn) Morris, 55, of Farmville, died at her residence.
   She was born August 22, 1951 in Charlottesville, a daughter of the late Samuel and Christine Sprouse Harris.
   She is survived by her husband, Rodney Morris; her sons, Jody Morris of Farmville, Jeremy Morris of Keene, New Hampshire and Jason Morris of Oceanside, California; her sisters, Carolyn Peters of Palmyra and Sandra Stinson of Scottsville: her brother, Ricky Harris of Charlottesville; five grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; her goddaughter, Christy Stinson of Palmyra and her in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. David Morris of Ruckersville. She was preceded in death by her brother, David Harris.
   A graveside service will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Holly Memorial Gardens in Charlottesville.
   The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Puckett Funeral Home, Farmville.
