   SEPTEMBER 12 - Dorothy E. Griggs Brown, 59, died Thursday, September 7, 2006.
   She was born April 26, 1947 in Cumberland. She was the ninth of 13 children born to Lucy Jackson Griggs and the late Walter M. Griggs Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Realous Theodore Brown.
   Mrs. Brown was an employee of Southslde Community Hospital for 28 years and a member of First Baptist Church in Farmville.
   She is survived by her mother, Lucy J. Griggs; companion of 19 years, James Green; ,two sons, Walter Keith and Otis Lee (Patricia) of Farmville; two daughters, Deborah Denise (Edward) Langhorn of Cumberland and Jacqueline Rena (Marvin) Vaughan of Prospect; nine grandchildren, Stanley Tony", Mario "Shawn", Dominique and Travis Brown, Kevon Woodson, Deron Harvey, Malcolm and Rashanda Vaughan, Tra-nell and Shantell Foster; four great-grandchildren, DeMarius and Shyheim Brown, Shalania and Sha'daijah Baker; seven sisters, Rosa Griggs, Sallie Mae Dubose, Lucy (Roger) Jackson, Sue (Tony) Smith, Frances Rose and Nancy Griggs; three brothers, Walter M. (Lena) Griggs Jr., David (Doris) Griggs and Lewis Griggs: mother-in-law, Rebecca Brown; a brother-in-law, George Brown; four sisters-in-law, America Rice, Dorothy Booker, Sarah Brown and Martha Douglas; an aunt and uncle, Jordan (Virginia) Jackson; former sister-in-law, Frances Griggs Reid (Armstead) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Betty Ross, Aubrey Griggs, Thomas Griggs and a granddaughter, Ashley T. Vaughan.
   A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Farmville, with interment in Odd Fellow Cemetery.
   Carl U. Eggleston Funeral Establishment, Farmville, was in charge of arrangements.

Hunter R. Meador, 75
Cumberland Native
Dies Sunday

   NEWPORT NEWS, Sept. 12 - Hunter R. Meador, 75, died Sunday, September 10, 2006 at Mary Immaculate Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
   He was the son of the late Marion Sr. and Pernie Meador. He was born and raised in Cumberland and was a longtime resident of Seaford before moving to Warwick Forest in Newport News.
   Mr. Meador was an employee of Basic Construction Company for 46 years. His wife of 51 years, Barbara P. Meador, preceded him in 2005.
   He is survived by a sister, Dorothy M. King; a brother, Marion H. Meador Jr.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Renee Meador, David and Kimberly Meador, and Jon and Corinne Meador; and five grandchildren, Marie, Josh, Charlotte, Julia, and Lance.
   The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13 at Amory Funeral Home in Grafton.
   A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 14 in Peninsula Memorial Park, Lorrie Lesher officiating. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. at Warwick Forest.

   SEPTEMBER 7 - William Redden, 83, of Farmville, died Wednesday. September 6, 2006 In Richmond after a long illness.
   He was born December 7, 1922 in Rainelle, West Virginia, a son of the late Walton W. and Mary Helen Phillips Redden. He was the husband of the late Arlene Redden.
   Mr. Redden served in the United Slates Army during World War II.
   He is survived by a son, Lieutenant Randy Redden and wife, Julie of Farmville; a sister, Margaret R. Williams of Jumping Branch, West Virginia; two grandsons, Jeffrey Keith Redden of Springfield and William Randolph Redden and wife, Celia Ramirez Redden of Fairfax; a great-granddaughter, Ashlie Rene Redden of Stafford and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two infant children and a sister, Janice Ruth St. Claire.
   A funeral service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home, Farmville, with interment in Restwood Cemetery in Hinton, West Virginia.
   The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

   SEPTEMBER 7 - Beverly G. Holmes, 63, of Farmville, died Tuesday, September 5, 2006 in Farmville.
   She was born March 10, 1943 in Holland, Ohio, a daughter of the late Cletus and Grace Heaton Myers.
  Ms. Holmes was a partner in Aris Gallery of Farmville.
  She Is survived by a son, Bryan Glenn Holmes of Farmville; a daughter, Stephanie Maybee of Powhatan and a family friend and business partner, Susan Hull of Farmville.
   The family will receive friends at her residence at any time. No public service will be held.

H. J. Hubbard Jr., 82
Dies Friday
In Sedley

SEDLEY, Sept. 5 - Harvey Johnson (H.J.) Hubbard Jr., 82, died Friday, September 1, 2006 at his home in Sedley surrounded by his family.
   Mr. Hubbard was born April 17, 1924 in Rice, a son of the late Louise Bradshaw Hubbard and Harvey Johnson Hubbard Sr. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 54 years, Dorothy Owen Hubbard, who died January 4, 2002. He was also predeceased by his brother, Robert Albert Hubbard.
   Mr. Hubbard attended Hampden-Sydney College from 1941-1943 and was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. His college career was interrupted by World War II and as an enlisted man he served as a Maser Sergeant in the Chemical Warfare Division of the United States Army. He was among the group of WWII veterans recalled by the Army during the Korean Conflict.
   Upon returning to civilian life, Mr. Hubbard earned a degree in accounting from National Business School. He was employed by Camp Manufacturing in Franklin and retired after 30 years as the Manager of Purchasing and a member of the "management committee" for Union Camp's Fine Paper Division.
   Mr. Hubbard and his wife, Dorothy, were lifelong residents of Sedley, where they founded Hubbard Peanut Company, Inc. In 1954. Dorothy's recipe and day to day management, combined with H.J.'s vision, and "after hours" work routine, led to success in their venture.
  Following retirement from Union Camp, Mr. Hubbard became President of Hubbard Peanut, Company. He managed all company expansion efforts, and was instrumental in the design of key processing systems. With his entrepreneurial spirit, Mr. Hubbard helped to create what has grown into one of the leading peanut processor in the United States.
   Mr. Hubbard was an active member of Grace Memorial United Methodist Church in Sedley. He taught adult Sunday school, sang in the choir, led the MYF, and served as the Lay Leader for many years. He was also chairman of the building committee and in that capacity led the rebuild when fire destroyed the original church in 1986. Mr. Hubbard served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years until his death.
   Active in many community organizations, Mr. Hubbard was a founding member of the board of directors of Southampton Academy and a past member of the Southampton County Zoning Board. He enjoyed membership in Cypress Cove Country Club.
   He is survived by three daughters, Lynne Hubbard Rabil and husband, Frank, Sandra Hubbard Edwards and husband, Jon all of Franklin, Terri Hubbard Powers and husband, Tom of Richmond; a son, Harvey Johnson Hubbard III of Sedley and his special friend, Michele Pierce: three grandchildren, Marshall Rabil, Jessica Rabil and Kaitlin Edwards; step-grandchildren, Jonathan Edwards and Doug Edwards; a sister, Constance Hubbard Gills; numerous nieces and nephews and special caregivers, Cathy, Dora, Lorraine and Ryan.
   A funeral service was held Monday at 11 a.m. at Grace Memorial United Methodist Church, Sedley, with the Rev. Elizabeth von Trapp Walker officiating. The Rev. Mary Marshall assisted. Burial followed in Rosemont Cemetery.
   Memorials may be made to Grace Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Sedley Volunteer Fire Department.

   SEPTEMBER 5 - Paul Wilson Lackey, a native of Old Fort, NC, died Tuesday, August 29, 2006 in Rice. He was born October 4, 1917, the eldest son of Zebulon L. and Agnes Beach Lackey.
   He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth Spann Lackey and their four children, Robert E. Lackey and his wife, Betsy, Marjo L. Mullins and her husband, Noah and Louisa E. Lackey both of Farmville and Franklin R. Lackey and his wife, Mae: seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, James and Zeb (Buck) Lackey; three sisters, Edith Melton Suttles, Elsie Good and Ruth Lambeth; brothers and sisters-in-law as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers. Ray, Carroll, Earl and Howard (Sam) Lackey and two sisters, Barbara Jean Lackey and Doris L. Smith.
   A memorial service was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Glenwood Baptist Church where he was a member. Private burial will take place at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.

Barbara Moore, 75

   SEPTEMBER 7 - Barbara Gay Keeling Moore, formerly of South Boston, died Sunday, September 3, 2006 at Holly Manor Nursing Home in Farmville.
   She was born September 2, 1931 and was 75 at her death. She was the daughter of the late Jack M. and Edna S. Keeling, owners and proprietors of The College Shoppe restaurant, formerly located on Main Street in Farmville. She was predeceased by her husband, Hugh M. Moore Sr. of South Boston and by a brother. Ray Milton Keeling of Farmville.
   She is survived by three children, Hugh M. "Charlie" Moore Jr. of South Boston, Kendall Keeling Moore Turman and her husband, Kenneth of South Boston and Dennis Kerby Moore and his wife, Janet of Farmville; one granddaughter. Jewel Rae Moore: four sisters, Joan Keeling Osborne and husband, Roddy of Farmville, Nancy Keeling Nichols and husband, Ray of Clover, Jackie Keeling Jackson of Chattanooga, TN and Susan Keeling "Bootie" Hensley of Culpeper and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
   Friends are invited to visit with family from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, September 9, at the home of Kerby Moore, 604 First Ave., Farmville. There will not be a public funeral.

   AUGUST 31 - Retired Lieutenant Colonel David Macksey Nelson, 78, of Arlington, died Tuesday, August 22,2006.
   He was born January 2, 1928 in Charlotte County, a son of the late Hunter Grant Nelson and Mary Elizabeth Pace Nelson. He was the husband of the late Mary Magdelline Nelson.
   Mr. Nelson retired in 1973 after 25 years in the U. S. Army having served during three wars. World War II, Korean and Vietnam. He graduated from Randolph-Henry High School in 1945 and was a lifelong member of Beulah United Methodist Church, Abilene.
   He is survived by his son, David Ashley Grant Nelson and his wife, Kara Elizabeth Nelson; three grandchildren, Stephen, Montana and Savannah Nelson and sisters, Margaret Robertson and Mary Eunice Eckhardt. He was predeceased by his brothers, Hermon, Amos, Marcus and Thomas Alton Nelson and his sister. Ruth Nelson and baby Ethel Nelson.
   A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 9, at 11 a.m. at Beulah United Methodist Church, Abilene.

   He was born June 2, 1926 in Prince Edward County, a son of the late Charles and Maggie Ola Tolbert Coleman.
   He is survived by his wife, Daisy Pearl Coleman; his children, Doris Thompson, Thomas H. Coleman Jr. II, Clarence C. Coleman and Irene T. Coleman all of Farmville, Michael E. Coleman and Jessie L. Coleman both of Prospect; two sisters, Inez Tuscon of Lynchburg and Betty Eagle of Rice; 13 grandchildren: 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Coleman.

   AUGUST 29 - Nellie Halley Parsons, 94, former member of Farmville United Methodist Church, died Thursday, August 17, 2006. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Benjamin Parsons of Farmville and a daughter, Shirley Conway Thomas of Flagstaff. AZ.
   She is survived by a son, Roy Powell Conway and wife. Loupe of Stafford, TX; a daughter, Arlene Susan Parsons Walters of DeLeon Springs, FL; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and three sisters, Lillie H. Layne of Farmville, Catherine H. Smith and Audrey H. Dix both of Madison Heights.

   Mrs. Perkins was a seamstress for 35 years with the Amelia Dress Factory. She was actively involved with the family business, Perkins Electric Company of Farmville.
   She is survived by her husband, George Lee Perkins; a daughter, Diana Allen and husband, Kenneth of Madison; a son, Jeffrey Perkins of Farmville; a grandson, Rob Williams and wife, Terran of Phoenix, AZ; a granddaughter, Susan Williams of Waynesboro; a great-granddaughter, Ashlynne Williams of Phoenix, AZ; three sisters, Louise Smith of Christiansburg, Edith Hall of Rustburg and Ivor Scruggs of Prospect; two brothers, Edward Adams of Kinston, NC and Russell Adams of Alphareppa, GA. She was preceded in death by a sister, Edna Garrett and two brothers, Floyd and Lewis Adams.
   Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Olive Branch United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
