Dies Saturday

   AUGUST 1 - Elizabeth Vassar Pickett, 91, of Farmville, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 in Farmville.
   She was born October 15, 1914 in Charlotte County, a daughter of the late Oscar Levi and Mary Atkinson Vassar.  She was the wife of the late Charles Bramel Pickett Jr.
   Mrs. Pickett earned her Bachelor's degree from Farmville State Teachers College and her Masters and PHD from the University of Virginia. She taught school in Brunswick County, Nottoway County and Prince Edward County School Systems, as well as Prince Edward Acad­emy. She was a member of the Judith Randolph-Longwood Chapter NSDAR and the UDC. She was also a member of Heritage Baptist Church.
   Mrs. Pickett was a correspondent for The Farmville Herald for many years.
   She is survived by her brother, Reginald L. Vassar of Erie, Pennsylvania; her two sisters, Lois V. Walker of Charlotte Court House and Edith V. Gentry of Saxonville, Massachusetts; a special and dear cousin, Clarence 0. Vassar of Black Mountain, North Carolina; 12 nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Basil M. Vassar.
   A funeral service was held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville. Interment followed in Westview Cemetery.

Dies Saturday

   DILLWYN, August 1 - William Thornhill (Peanut) Shumaker, 79, of Dillwyn, passed away Saturday. July 29, 2006.
   He was born in Buckingham County on May 7, 1927 to the late Harrison and Betty Catlett Shumaker.
   He is survived by his wife, Ethelene Reynolds Shumaker of Dillwyn; a daughter, Laura S. Spittle and husband, David of Amelia; a son. William Shumaker and wife, Michelle of Dillwyn; a sister, Zella Garnett of Dillwyn; a brother, Phillip Shumaker of Dillwyn and a granddaughter, Raye Spittle of Amelia. He was preceded in death by a son, Wallace L. Shumaker.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in St. Andrews Baptist Church Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Tuesday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

   AUGUST 1 - Robert Phillip Lawton, 83, of Smithfield, NC, died on Saturday July 29, 2006, at the home of Gary and Annette Lawton, in Nashville. NC.
   He was born on May 21, 1923 in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania of the late Benjamin Harrison and Mary Irene Lawton. He was one of 10 children.
   He is survived by his wife, Connie; his sisters, Dorothy Smaltz and Joy Husbands; his children, Lois Murray, Robert Lawton Jr., David Lawton, Sherry Pugh and Gary Lawton; his step-children, Dr. Karl Hartman Jr. and Valarie Millikin; 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Lawton was a naval veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict, and a Free Mason.
   Visitation will be from 12-1 p.m. on Saturday, August 5, followed immediately by the funeral service, at Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn. Interment will follow at Salem United Methodist Church in Dillwyn.

   LURAY, August 1 - Hannah Crawford Reynolds, 82, of Luray, died Friday, July 28, 2006.
   She was born August 20, 1923 in Winchester, a daughter of the late Robert B. Crawford and Regina Shaffer Crawford. She was the wife of the late Charles Reynolds.
   Mrs. Reynolds grew up in Farmville where her parents owned a business.
   She is survived by two sons, Charles Reynolds of Highland Falls, NY and Lee Reynolds of China; a sister, Regina Whitehead of Nashville, TN; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Staunton.

Merry Lewis Allen, 79

Professor, Dies

   CHARLOTTESVILLE, July 27 - Merry Lewis Allen, 79, of Charlottesville, died Friday, July 21, 2006, In a local care facility.
   Born February 24, 1927, in Mechums River, she was the daughter of the late Richard D. Allen and Irene Barksdale Allen.
   Miss Allen was a 1944 graduate of Broadus Wood High School in Earlysville and a 1951 graduate of the College of William and Mary. She earned graduate degrees at the University of Illinois, Champagne, Illinois and the University of Virginia.
   She was a mathematics director and taught at Albemarle High School from 1954 to 1959, and at Longwood College from 1960 to 1992, While at Longwood she served as head of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science for 20 years. Upon her retirement in 1992, she returned to her home in the Charlottesville area. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, and working. in Chestnut Grove Baptist Church where she became a member when she was a young child.
   Surviving are her two sisters, Irene Turner of Powell, Tennessee and Frances Schlanger and her husband, Arthur of Glenview, Illinois: two nephews, David Allen and Richard Turner and two great-nephews.
   A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Earlysville.

J. Meredith Robeson, 92

Retired Educator, Dies

   KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC, July 27 - J. Meredith Robeson, 92, formerly of Farmville, died Friday, July 21, 2006 at Chesapeake General Hospital.
   Born in Millwood, he was the son of the late John Maxwell and Elenora Meredith Robeson and was the widower of Anne Walters Robeson.
   Mr. Robeson was a public school teacher having taught for 32 years in Prince Edward and Cumberland County and retired as Assistant Superintendent of the Cumberland County School System. He graduated high school in Lynchburg and obtained a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Syracuse University. He was a member of St. Andrews By-the-Sea Episcopal Church and was a former member of Johns Memorial Episcopal Church in Farmville.
   Mr. Robeson is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Bonnar and husband, James of Gloucester Point; a son. Jack M. Robeson and wife, Sharon of Mechanicsville and four grandchildren.
   A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, July 30 at 2 p.m. at St. Andrews By-the-Sea Episcopal Church by the Rev. Charles E. B. Gill.

   BUCKINGHAM, July 27 -Charles Henry (Dick) Whorley, 70, of Buckingham, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at his home.
   He was born June 28, 1936 to Mary Banton Whorley Glass and the late Charles Perkins Whorley.
   Mr. Whorley was a farmer and livestock auctioneer for many years. He served a tour of duty with the United States Navy following his graduation from Buckingham Central High School. He was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
   In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 49 years, Maude Elizabeth (Betty) Dunn Whorley; his children, Jeffrey Scott Whorley and wife, Kay of Suwanee, Georgia and Sharon Lynn Whorley Jamerson and husband, Ronald of Dillwyn; three sisters, Marie Amos, Minnie Parrott and Joyce Gormus and three beloved grandsons, Massey Stewart Jarrett Whorley of Williamsburg and Stewart Mitchell Jamerson, Jonathan Bransford Jamerson of Dillwyn.
   A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in the Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery.

   BURKEVILLE, July 27 - A funeral service for Robert Ray Taylor, 67, was held Friday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at Crewe Baptist Church, with interment in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Burkeville. Mr. Taylor died at his home Wednesday, July 19, 2006.
   Mr. Taylor was a former mayor of Burkeville, and was currently a member of the Nottoway County Board of Supervisors. He was born March 31, 1939, in Brunswick County, a son of the late Henry and Murtis Taylor.
   He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Patricia Redford Taylor; his children, Robert Ray Taylor Jr. and wife, Barbara of Lawrenceville, Katherine Taylor Hybl and husband. Dale of Niceville, FL; grandchildren, Abigail and Ethan Hybl; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Whimp, Phil and Mable, Tom and Judy Taylor all of Brunswick County, and Harry and Evangeline of Emporia.

  Mrs. Pride was an employee of Sheldon's Motel and Restaurant for 27 years, retiring in October 1996.
   She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Meherrin, where she served on the Missionary Circle, Usher Board, Pastor's Aide and the Food Committee.
   She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Haywood 0. Pride; two sons, Vargus (Rebecca) of Goochland and Wayne of Meherrin; one daughter, Michelle P. Townsend (Jerry) of Meherrin; one brother, Freddie Troxler (Mary); one sister, Lorena Jones and six grandchildren, Betrum, Ricardo, Alicia, Sade, Tammy and Chelsie and a host of relatives and friends.

Harold A. Lewis, 83

Resident, Dies in NC

   BELMONT, NC, July 25 - Harold Armstrong Lewis, 83, of Belmont, North Carolina, died Friday, July 21, 2006.
   He was a native of Belmont, the son of the late Walter Franklin and Cora Armstrong Lewis.
   Mr. Lewis was employed by Dixon Ford from 1940 until his retirement in October 2000, serving as parts manager for most of those years. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Belmont where he served as Elder, Deacon, choir member and youth group leader.
   He served in the United States Army in the 439th Engineer Depot Company from 1943 until 1946. He was deployed to New Guinea and the Philippines and was part of the occupation force in Japan.
   Mr. Lewis was past president of the Belmont Rotary Club with 32 years perfect attendance and a member of the Hornets Nest Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America.
   He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Craig Lewis; son and daughter-in-law, Berle John III and Mary Ann Bryant Sigman of Cumberland; grandchildren, SSgt Berle J. Sigman IV of Quantico, Susan G. Sigman of Bethlehem, PA and Thomas E. Sigman of Cumberland; sister, Nena Lewis Pratt of Belmont and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
   Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Belmont, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery.

   THURMONT, MD July 25 -John Vernon "Coach" Birkland, 98, formerly of Thurmont, Maryland, died Saturday, July 22, 2006 at Homewood at Crumland Farms, where he had resided for the past live years. He was the husband of Laura Nell Crawley Birkland, who died April 24, 2005.
   Born June 6, 1908 in Hawthorn, NJ, he was a son of the late George A. and Minnie Burrows Birkland.
   He was graduated from the University of Maryland, where he played football, and was on the boxing team. He received his Masters degree from New York University. He served four years in the U. S. Navy, the last two at Hampden-Sydney College as athletic instructor of the Navy's V-12 Program. For many years he taught at Thurmont High School until his retirement. He was a former member of the Maryland and Frederick County Teachers Associations.
   The last member of his immediate family, he is survived by his daughter, Melissa Copenhaver of Hagerstown, MD; a niece, nephew and several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother and two sisters.
   Funeral services were held 11 a.m. today (Tuesday) at the Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, Thurmont, with interment in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont.

Eugene Rudy, 59

   JULY 20 - Eugene McCarthy Rudy, 59, loving and devoted husband of Ann Allen Rudy and father of Ann Elizabeth Rudy, died suddenly, Sunday, July 16, 2006 while riding his Harley on the sun-dappled roadways of rural Virginia - one of his many favorite pastimes.
   "Gene" proudly served our country in both the US Navy and Naval Reserve. He was a successful entrepreneur and worked hand-in-hand with Ann in a variety of business pursuits. Gene was a talented and gifted guitarist, graphic designer, photographer and avid collector of eclectic treasures. He was a loyal and trusted friend, and his warm smile and keen wit will be deeply missed by many.
   Mr. Rudy was born in Portsmouth and was a graduate of Cradock High School and VCU's Department of Communication Arts and Design. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Clarence Rudy on May 24,2006.
   In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Rudy of Virginia Beach; his sister, Susan Rudy Lindahl and her husband, David of Mesa, Arizona; his brother, Michael Bruce Rudy and his wife, Mary Anne of Columbia, South Carolina, and their families.
   A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 22, 2 p.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 709 Buffalo Street, Farmville.
