   JULY 18 - Charles Edward (Pete) Davidson, 75, of Mooresville, North Carolina, formerly of Buckingham, died Friday, July 14, 2006.
   He was the son of the late Charles Edward Davidson and May Wade Davidson.
   He is survived by his wife, Zelta Davidson; a son, David Dwayne Davidson and wife. Lisa of Mooresville; two sisters, Peggy Davidson Crews and Mary Lee Davidson both of Buckingham and two grandchildren, Michael and Amber Davidson.

Dies Monday

   STUARTS DRAFT, July 13 - Maude White Shepard, 75, went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 10, 2006 at Augusta Medical Center.
   She was born February 5, 1931 in Buckingham County the daughter of the late William and Eva Londeree Adcock.
   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Curtis E. Via and her second husband John E. Shepard, Sr.
   Mrs. Shepard attended Lynchburg Business College pursuing a secretarial degree. She enjoyed spending time with her family.
   Survivors include her children, John E. Shepard Jr. and his wife, Janis, Linda Anne Brown and her husband Ray, Sandra Kaye Corbett and her husband James, Martha Sue Siron and her husband, Toby; five sisters, Marie A. Humphries, Mary Ester A. Brown, Ressie A. Davis, Anne A. Timberlake and Dorothy A. Ragland; grandchildren. Tony Shifflet, Kim P. Lackner, Heidi P. Painter, Don Hoover, Stan Pokusa, Brian Shifflett, Jason Corbett; step-grandchildren, Garnett L. Siron and Matthew D. Siron and 15 great-grandchildren.
   A graveside service will be conducted 11a.m. Friday, July 14, at Scottsvllle Cemetery by the Rev. Dennis Bradley.

John Gilliam Bruce, 92
Died Friday
In Farmville

   JULY 13 - John Gilliam "Jack" Bruce, 92, died Friday, July 7, 2006, in Farmville.
   He was born May 5, 1914 on the family farm between Rice and Farmville, a son of William Basil and Annie Scott Gilliam Bruce.
   Mr. Bruce was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Kimball Bruce.
   Surviving are his sister. Nancye Bruce Noel; one brother, Franklin Alexander Bruce, and his, Frances Bruce, all of Farmville and 11 nieces and nephews.
  After graduating from Rice High School, Mr. Bruce attended Hampden-Sydney College and prior to World War II worked in sales for Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company.
  Mr. Bruce enlisted in the Army in 1943 and was commissioned a second lieutenant eventually serving with the 254111 Regiment attached to the Third Infantry Division under General Patton. He fought in the European campaigns, most notably in the Battle of the Bulge, and was awarded the Sliver Star, Purple Heart and the Bronze Star medals. He also took active leadership in reactivating the National Guard unit at Farmville after the war and was first company commander of the reorganized group.
   On his return from military service "Jack" was part owner of W. J. Bloomfield, a Farmville plumbing and heating firm, operated by his own real estate firm, and served on the Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors from 1956-1958.
   Jack inherited a lifelong interest in politics, his father having represented Cumberland and Prince Edward Counties in the Virginia House of Delegates. It was a natural reaction that he volunteer as a campaign aide to J. Lindsay Almond Jr. in his successful race for Governor of Virginia in 1957.
  Mr. Bruce was appointed to the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board in 1958 and served until 1970, including a term as president of the National Alcoholic Beverage Control Association 1961-62 and served as chairman of the Virginia Board.
   After leaving the ABC Board, Mr. Bruce served as Sergeant at Arms in the General Assembly from 1972 to 1974 and subsequently on the staff of the House of Delegates from 1980 to 1991.
   While living in Farmville, Jack was master of the Farmville Masonic Lodge, president of the Chamber of Commerce and president of the Prince Edward County Community Chest, as well as a member of the American Legion and Lions Club. A member of Sharon Baptist Church in his childhood, Jack became a deacon in Farmville Baptist Church, and in his Richmond years, was a member of River Road Baptist Church.
   A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville on Saturday, July 15, followed by interment in Westview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

   JULY 11 - Billie Dawn Glenn, 65, of Farmville, died Saturday, July 8, 2006.
   She was born June 29, 1941 in Virginia, a daughter of the late William and Marjorie Glenn Crenshaw.
   Mrs. Glenn was the registrar for Prince Edward County for 28 years.
   She is survived by her husband, Robert M. Glenn; two daughters, Sandra Dawn Dilly of Farmville and Cindy Anne Marks of Charlottesville; a sister, Betty Jean Watson of Farmville and two grandsons, Ben and Gus Humphrey of Charlottesville.

   Funeral services were held today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. at Farmville Baptist Church.

Sandra Boswell, 62

Dies Sunday

   RICE, July 11 - Sandra Anthony Boswell, 62, of Rice, died Sunday, July 9, 2006 at her home.
   Born December 17, 1943 at Midway Plantation in Nelson County, she was preceded in death by her parents, Emma Glover Anthony and John Robert Anthony and her husband, Elliott Boswell.
   She is survived by two sons, Johnny Ellington and wife, Judy of Farmville and Andy Ellington and wife, Tracey of Rice and five grandchildren. Trey and Jason Ellington, Quinton Ellington and Jennifer and K. C. Wallace. "Mini" will be dearly missed by her loving family.
   A graduate of Prince Edward Academy, Mrs. Boswell attended Chowan College. She worked for many years at Holly Manor and then with Southside Community Hospital Home Health Care. Her smile and quick wit brightened the days of many patients and co-workers. She loved and enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren, good friends and neighbors, and her faithful dogs. She always loved a good meal, a good movie or a spirited game of cards or checkers.
   A memorial service will be held this evening (Tuesday) at 7 p.m. at Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville with a reception and celebration of Sandra's life to follow.

MOUNT AIRY, NC, July 11 - Mrs. Mary Louise Lowry Simmons, age 84, of Mount Airy, NC, devoted wife of 64 years of Joel "Joe" Walter Simmons, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.
   Mrs. Simmons was born in Surry County, January 17, 1922 to Arthur F. and Grace Stewart Lowry. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was a member of Mount Airy Christian Church.
   Surviving are her loving husband, Joel "Joe" Walter Simmons of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gerald Spates of Farmville; grandchildren, Julie Adams and husband John and Courtney Tharpe all of Farmville; great grandchildren, Taylor Adams, Christian Adams and Max Tharpe all also of Farmville; and a brother, Charles Lowry of Mount Airy, NC. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by sisters, Lessie L. Badgett and Ruth L. Massey; and brothers, Stewart Lowry, James Lowry, Joe Lowry and Richard Lowry.
   A graveside service was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 8 at Oakdale Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Davon Huss and the Rev. Wayne Williamson.

Resident, Dies

   TOMS RIVER, NJ, July 6 -Harold James "Jim" Stark, 82, of Toms River, NJ, died Saturday, July 1, 2006 at his home.
   Born in Margaretville, NY, he lived in Oradell for 33 years, Melbourne, FL for 20 years and recently moved to Toms River.
   Mr. Stark was a sales representative for Quaker State Motor Oil for 15 years before retiring. Prior to that, he owned and operated Stark's Automotive, Little Ferry, for 20 years. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the BMW Motorcycle Club and the RSVP, both of Melbourne, FL. He also volunteered for the Florida Highway Patrol.
   He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lillian; two daughters, Dawn McCann of Toms River and Dale Dowdy of Farmville; one brother, Thomas stark of Atlanta, GA and three grandchildren, David James Dowdy, Ann Elizabeth Dowdy and Dana Noel McCann. He was predeceased by a son, Drew and a brother, Walter.
   A funeral service will be held this evening (Thursday) at 8 p.m. at the Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, Toms River.

William Henry Jones Sr., 89

Dies Tuesday

   BUCKINGHAM, July 6 - William Henry Jones Sr., 89, of Buckingham, died Tuesday, July 4, 2006.
   Born October 12, 1916, he was preceded in death by his parents. Vie Ethridge Jones and Mary Miller Jones: his wife, Nancy Baber Jones; his brother, Howard Lewis Jones and his daughter-in-law, Oria Toni Jones.
   Survivors include one son, William H. "Billy" Jones Jr. of Buckingham; three daughters, Doris J. Moser and husband, Del of Richmond, Elizabeth A. Jones of Norfolk and Janice J. Campbell and husband, Ty of Buckingham; two grandchildren, Shelly "Niki" Jones and Quincy Campbell; one step-grandson, Tommy Leighty and five nephews.
   Throughout the years he was raising his family, Mr. Jones was an active member of Glenmore United Methodist Church. A farmer, Mr. Jones always delighted in saying he lived on the "Poor House Farm", having purchased the Buckingham County pauper farm in 1940. He semi-retired from farming in 1983, becoming a rural mail carrier in Buckingham and retiring in 1994.
   A funeral service was held 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Sharon Baptist Church, Buckingham. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

   JULY 6 - George Robertson Parker, 89, of Crewe and formerly of Bedford, died Monday, June 26, 2006 at Southside Community Hospital In Farmville.
   He was born November 20, 1916 in Richmond, a son of the late James Russell Parker and Annie Lillian Robertson Parker.
   He was an Army veteran serving in World War II. Mr. Parker moved to Bedford in 1954 and was co-owner of Bedford Motors. Later in life he enjoyed dairy and poultry farming.
   He is survived by his wife, Rachel Hoback Parker of Crewe; two daughters, Rhonda Parker Ware of Crewe and Laura Ann Leftwich of Harrisonburg; two sons, Robbie Parker of Danville and Bill Parker of Moneta; stepsons, Ralph Reynolds Jr. of Bedford, Randy Reynolds, Richard Reynolds, Ronald Reynolds and Roger Reynolds all of Crewe and Robert Reynolds of Winston Salem, NC; a sister, Jean Land of Atlanta, GA; 22 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren including the apple of his eye, Made Virginia Ware. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Parker and Russell Parker and a sister, Elsie Alexander all of Richmond.
   A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Friday, June 30 at Bedford Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Francis B. Avery Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Virginia Memorial Park with military honors given by American Legion Post #16.

   He was born June 2, 1939 in Buckingham County, the son of the late James Tyler Ballowe and Ida Louise Adcock Ballowe.
   He is survived by his wife, Sharon (Sherry) Nuckols Ballowe; four children, Janice B. Scruggs, of Buckingham Shelby K. Scott of Cumberland, Jennifer B. Lann of Dlllwyn and Shannon K. Ballowe of Glen Alien; two stepchildren, Howard Dale Midkiff Jr. of Dillwyn and Angela A. Sprouse of Buckingham: a sister, Joyce Raglan of Shipman; two brothers, Wilbur Ballowe of Barboursville and Lloyd Ballowe of Scottsvllle; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

   MADISON HEIGHTS. July 4 -James Lewis "Jimbo" Bray, 49, of Madison Heights, died Monday, July 3, 2006 at his home.
   Born May 7, 1957 in Richmond, he was a son of the late Crawford and Doris Jamerson Bray. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Charlie and Betty Jamerson; his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Rose Delia Bray and an older brother and sister.
   He was a long time employee of Simplimatic Engineering and Sentry Equipment Erectors. He was baptized at Oakdale Baptist Church in Madison Heights. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman.
   He is survived by his brother, Kenny Bray and wife, Bettie; a sister, Betty B. King and husband, Richard, all of Madison Heights; five nephews, Donny Bray Jr., Jeremy Bray, Rodney Pippin, Justin King and Matthew King: four great-nephews, K. C. Bray, Landon Bray, Kyle Bray and Ethan Bray; his best friend, Carroll Hudson; two very special little girls, Kalsy King and Trinity Tyree and a host of special family and friends.
   A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 7, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, Lynchburg, by the Rev. Kirk Farmer. Interment will follow in the Jamerson Family Cemetery in Buckingham County.

   June 29 - Wilbert Monroe Beckelheimer, 70, of Pamplin, died Saturday, June 17, 2006, in Farmville. He was born July 7, 1935, the son of Mason Beckelheimer.
   He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Atkins Bailey of Richmond, and wife, Juanita Beckelheimer of Farmville; son, Carl Beckelheimer of Sandston, and two stepsons, Ronnie Hurst of Farmville and William Hurst of Alberta.
   A memorial service was held Saturday night, June 24, at his residence in Pamplin.

   June 29 — William Porter Davis, 83, of Cumberland, died on Thursday, June 22, 2006, at Holly Manor Nursing Home.
   He was born on May 26, 1923 in Cumberland, the son of the late Nathanel Lee and Martha Ranson Davis. He was a machinist with the American Tobacco Co., Richmond, for a number of years before his retirement.
   Mr. Davis was preceded in death by two sisters, Octavia Fischer and Katherine "Kate" Blanton.
   He is survived by a brother, Robert Lee Davis and wife, Doris, of Farmville; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, June McGee of Richmond.
   Graveside services were conducted on Saturday at 11 a.m. from Centenary United Methodist Church cemetery.
   Remembrances may be made to the Centenary United Methodist Church.
   Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of services.

   Dillwyn, June 29 — Mae DeMaio, 89, of Dillwyn, died Tuesday, June 27, 2006 in Brooklyn, New York. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Sr.
   She is survived by her son, Frederick DeMaio Jr. and daughters, Margaret Priolo and Barbara Miele. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, and a loving sister of Josephine DeSanto.
   Viewing will be held at the Scarpaci Funeral Home in Brooklyn, New York, Thursday and Friday. Mass will be held at St. Bernadette Shrine at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with burial immediately to follow at the 2nd Calvary Cemetery in Queens, New York.
