Celebration
of life

Cora Lee
Eldridge
August 6, 1909 -
May 9, 2006
Obituary
Deaconess Cora Lee Eldridge departed
this life on May 9,2006 surrounded by her children. She was born August
6, 1909 in Buckingham County, Virginia to the late Deacon Robert Curtis
Lee and Patty Waverly Lee. At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as
her Savior and joined the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.
On July 4, 1931 she
was united in marriage to Deacon James Granville Eldridge. They were
blessed with two daughters and one son, Cora Berniece Peaks of Dillwyn,
Virginia (who married Raymond T. Peaks); Zannie Miller of Silver Spring,
Maryland (who married Eugene T. Miller, Jr.); and the Reverend Clarence
Eldridge of Lanham, Maryland (who married the Reverend Mary Alice
Eldridge). Upon marriage, she joined her husband as a faithful servant
at the Baptist Union Baptist Church where she remained a member until
her death.
She always enjoyed worshiping the Lord and working in the
church. Among the many roles she assumed were deaconess; Senior Choir
president and choir member; Willing Workers Club member; Pastor's Aide
Club member; Missionary Circle member; and Corresponding Secretary of
the Convention, North River Baptist Association. Recently, Baptist Union
bestowed upon her the honor of "Church Mother." . Affectionately known
as Momma (or "Bumma" to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
"adopted" family), she loved to have fun. Momma loved to share a laugh
or a friendly tease with those around her. She was never at a loss for
words, always eager to engage in conversation with friends, relatives
and even strangers.
She always liked to stay busy. Until her retirement,
she enjoyed serving good food for the body as well as the soul at the
Buckingham County High School (formerly Carter G. Woodson High School)
cafeteria where she made many long-lasting friendships among staff and
students alike. After retiring, she enjoyed working in her garden
growing all types of lovely flowers and vegetables, making beautiful
quilts and traveling to various destinations.
Even as she advanced in
years, she was always eager to go for a ride to visit family or friends,
go shopping or help out around the house in whatever way she could. Of
course, always a dignified lady. Momma rarely left the house without
makeup, polished nails, jewelry and a fancy scarf.
She leaves a legacy
of love, hope and pride to her daughters Berniece Peaks and Zannie
Miller; her son Clarence Eldridge; her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Lee,
Oreatha Eldridge and Carrie Eldridge; her nine grandchildren; her
eighteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins,
and other loving relatives and friends.
In Appreciation
We wish to acknowledge with heartfelt
appreciation your comforting expressions of love and sympathy, including
cards, calls, visits and other acts of kindness.
