   APRIL 13 - F. Bobby Meadows Jr., 54, of Farmville, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006 in Richmond.
   He was born September 2, 1951.
   He is survived by his wife, Linda Meadows; a son, Kevin Meadows of Farmville; his father, Fred B. Meadows of Farmville; two brothers, Lynn Meadows and his wife, Sylvia of Blackstone and Marvin Meadows and his wife, Nancy of Farmville; a sister, Joan Meadows Garrett and her husband, Bernard of Farmville; nephews, Ryan Meadows, Adam Garrett, Dustin and Dean Meadows all of Farmville; a niece. Lacy Meadows of Blackstone; a brother-in-law, Sam Whitlow and his wife, Marion and mother-in-law, Louise Whitlow all of Richmond.
   A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Farmville United Methodist Church with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Shorter Funeral Home.

   She was born In Halifax County on May 11, 1937, the daughter of the late Wlllie Stanley and Sylvia Lucille Cliborne.
   She is survived by her husband. Ray Roscoe Routt of Cullen; three sons, Donald Ray Routt and Kenneth Roscoe Routt both of Cullen and Wayne Dale Routt and wife. Serene of Sheppards and a granddaughter, Logan Sierra Routt.
   Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

   PAMPLIN, April 13 - Horace Gilliam, 92, of Pamplln, died Saturday, April 8, 2006 in Farmville.
   He was born January 25, 1914 in Prince Edward County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Covington Gilliam.
   Mr. Gilliam was a retired farmer.
   He is survived by his son, James Gilliam and his wife. Iris of Pamplln; his daughter. Nan Higgins and her husband, Ben of Gloucester; five grandchildren, Sharon Higgins Harris, Lynn Higgins, Susan Higgins Smith, Ginger Davis and J. T. Gilliam II and two great-grandchildren.
   A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Olive Branch United Methodist Church Cemetery.

John. B. Fuqua, 87
Of Prince Edward County
Died Wednesday, April 5

   ATLANTA, GA, April 11 - J. B. Fuqua, 87, entrepreneur and renowned philanthropist, died of complications from bronchitis, Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta, with his family by his side.
   Mr. Fuqua was born, John Brooks Fuqua, June 26, 1918, near Elam in Prince Edward County. His mother died when he was two years old, so he was raised and adopted by his Fuqua grandparents, changing his name to Fuqua.
   The life of J. B. Fuqua represents an extraordinary journey from humble beginnings 87 years ago on a small Virginia farm to the heights of business and political accomplishments. Self-taught in ham radio operations, he graduated from Prospect High School in 1935 and joined the merchant marines as a radio officer at 17. Leaving the service at 19, he Joined WCSC, a radio station in Charleston, SC, becoming the youngest chief radio station engineer in the country.
   At 21, he convinced a group of investors in Augusta, GA to back him in a new radio station and became its manager and part owner. He established Augusta's first television station, WJBF, In 1951.
   Over the next 65 years, he used his financial skills to build a fortune. For many years, he was the Chairman of Fuqua Industries, a New York Stock Exchange company that at one time was one of the nation's largest conglomerates.
   Business was not his only interest. Mr. Fuqua served four terms in the Georgia Legislature from 1957 to 1964. He was chairman of the Democratic Party from 1962 to 1966 and played an instrumental role in the election of Carl Sanders as Georgia's Governor in 1962. He believed deeply in public service and his savvy political Instincts were greatly admired. He was one of Lyndon Johnson's closest friends and has served on the Board of the LBJ Foundation for many years. His presidential relationships spanned over forty years, especially with Presidents Ford, Carter and Clinton.
   Many believe Mr. Fuqua's greatest legacy has been his philanthropy. In 1999 he was recognized as one of "The Hundred Most Generous Americans" by Worth Magazine. In 1989 he was recognized as "Philanthropist of the Year" by the Georgia Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives, then in 1993 he was awarded the "Philanthropist of the Year" by the National Association of Fund Raising Executives. His philanthropy has included Duke University's School of Business, The Fuqua Heart Center at Piedmont Hospital, The Fuqua Center for Late-Life Depression at Emory, The Atlanta Botanical Garden and Atlanta Union Mission. His giving has touched thousands of lives during his lifetime. He often measured his success not on how much he made but how much he was able to give away.
   Mr. Fuqua was a major contributor to Hampden-Sydney College. Through his Rural Education Foundation he donated more than 12 million dollars to Prince Edward Academy and has continued to support the private school which is now The Fuqua School.
   Mr. Fuqua has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors. He has honorary doctorates from ten colleges and universities, including Hampden-Sydney, Duke University, Mercer University and Oglethorpe to name a few. As a broadcasting pioneer he received Georgia's "Broadcast Citizen of the Year" in 1963. In 1984, he received the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Award. Among his other honors, he received the Shining Light Award from Atlanta Gas Light and WSB in 2000 and was inducted into Junior Achievement's National Business Hall of Fame and Junior Achievement of Georgia's Atlanta Business Hall of Fame in 2002.
   Funeral services were held Saturday, April 8 at 11 a.m. at Northwest Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, with a graveside service at Westover Memorial Park in Augusta, GA on Monday afternoon.
   He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Chapman Fuqua, who was his partner In politics, philanthropy and all his endeavors. He is also survived by his son J. Rex Fuqua, daughter-in-law Duvall Schultz Fuqua, and grandchildren, Jennifer Fuqua Fowler, Lauren Brooks Fuqua, Ruth Duvall Fuqua, John Rex Fuqua, Frances Hattaway Fuqua, and Dorothy Isabel Fuqua. Mr. Fuqua was predeceased by his son, Alan Brooks Fuqua who died in 1971.

Resident, Dies In NJ

   NEW JERSEY, April 11 - Helen Elizabeth Cottrell, 87, of Manchester Two, NJ, died Friday, April 7, 2006 at the Manchester Manor Rehabilitation Center.
   Born on Lakewood, NJ, she lived there most of her life moving to Manchester Two in 1999. She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford in 1985; her brother, Alvin Sorenson and her sister, Emma Gibson.
   Mrs. Cottrell worked for Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood as a certified nurses aid for 15 years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Toms River, NJ.
   She is survived by four sons, Clifford of Virginia, Robert of Browns Mills, NJ, Richard of Bayville, NJ and David of Whiting, NJ; one daughter, Patricia Pedrick of Cumberland; one brother, William "Bud" Tompkins of Lakewood, NJ and her nephew, Fred Britton of Roanoke, who was like another son to her. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
   Visiting hours today (Tuesday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Manchester Memorial Funeral Home, Whiting, NJ, with a funeral service at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Larry D. Maxey, 54
Landscape Award
Winner, Dies Friday

   BUCKINGHAM, April 11 - Larry Dyche Maxey, 54, of Buckingham, died in his home on Friday, April 7, 2006.
   He was born January 16, 1952, the son of the late Herbert E. Maxey Sr. and Christine Shiflet Maxey of Buckingham.
   He is survived by his wife, Jodi Sisson Maxey; five children, Corinne, Olivia, Thomas, Coulter and Barrett Maxey; a brother, Herbert E. Maxey Jr. and wife, Nancy of Buckingham; a sister, Linda Maxey Howard and husband, Lem of Charlottesville; five nephews and nieces, Herbert E. Maxey, III (Tripp) and Christina Maxey of Buckingham and Lauren, Melissa and Meredith Howard of Charlottesville.
   Mr. Maxey was the owner of Maxey Exterior Design, Inc, and a member of the Virginia Society of Landscape Designers. He received numerous landscape awards from the "Keep Virginia Beautiful" campaign. He was an active member of Maysville Baptist Church, served as a deacon, past chairman of the deacon board, trustee and Sunday School teacher.
   Mr. Maxey graduated from Bridgewater College in 1974, where he lettered in several varsity sports and was tri-captain of the football team, held the career touchdown record for 20 years, and held the school's javelin record for 20 years, as well. He also served as a youth league coach for numerous sports.
   Funeral services were held Sunday at Maysville Baptist Church Multi-Purpose Facility with interment in Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery.

   She was born December 31, 1925 in Buckingham County, the daughter of the late Edward Hudgins and Mamie Drumheller Hudgins. She was the widow of Ernest Lipscomb.
   She is survived by three sons, Nolan Lipscomb of Cumberland, Nelson Lipscomb of Powhatan and Wayne Lipscomb of Cumberland; three sisters, Eleanor H. Troutman of Richmond, Mary H. Dunkum and Annie Ruth H. Jones both of Dillwyn and three grandchildren.

   He was born in Washington, DC and raised in Wilmington, DE. Before moving to Virginia he served Presbyterian churches in Texas, Wyoming and Washington. He continued to serve local churches in Charlotte and Prince Edward counties after his retirement.
   He is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughter, Kerri Walker of Richmond; daughter, Kathy Braught and husband, Mike and their two children, Hannah and Sarah, all of Georgetown, TX; daughter, Vicki R.    She was the widow of the late Hasten Robert Ross and John Thomas Garrett.
   Mrs. Garrett was a retired waitress at the American Cafe and a member of Crewe Christian Church.

   PROSPECT, March 28 - Mary Jane McFadden Ferguson, of Prospect, died Monday, March 27,2006.
   She was born June 23, 1919 in Buckingham, the daughter of the late John Mayo McFadden and Edna Allie Land McFadden. She was married to the late Samuel Luther Ferguson of Prospect.
   Mrs. Ferguson was an active, long-time member of Glenn Memorial Baptist Church and served as Senior Adult Class secretary. One of her favorite times of the year was when she assisted with the exhibits at the Farmville Five County Fair. She was known for never meeting a stranger and her smile greeted you long before she spoke. To her, she loved her friends and they became her family.
   She is survived by three sisters, Edna M. Rice and husband, Charles Buck Rice of Farmville, Josephine M. Muto of Petersburg and Beatrice M. Walker and husband, Sammy Walker of West Palm Beach, Florida.
   She was preceded in death by one son, Joseph E. Mitchell and survived by daughter-in-law, Brenda D. Mitchell of Richmond. She is also survived by three sons and one daughter, John M. Mitchell and wife, Mary Rose Mitchell of Singer, Louisiana, Sammy L. Ferguson and wife, Gloria B. Ferguson of Farmville, Donald R. Ferguson and wife, Brenda W. Ferguson of Farmville and Debra M. Good-rich and husband, Teddy B. Goodrich of Keysville.
   In addition, she is survived by nine grandchildren, Margaret Mitchell Sizemore, John (Pete) M. Mitchell Jr., Sandra M. Smith, Kim M. Reid, Amy F. Helton, Dawn F. Williams, Kari F. Rockwell, Randall S. Ferguson and Ashley W. Ferguson. She is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
   The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home.
   Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Glenn Memorial Baptist Church in Prospect, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
