   She was the daughter of the late Jasper B. Cool and Bartie M. Fisher Cool and the widow of Edward L. Sill.
She is survived by a son, Leon Gooden and other relatives, Sue Cochran, Linda Utt and Nettie Miller.
   Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, where family will receive friends starting at 12 noon. Interment will follow in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

    MARCH 21 - William C. "Billy" Moore Jr., of Farmville, died Sunday, March 19, 2006 in Farmville.
   Mr. Moore was a retired insurance agent for Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company, US Navy veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Farmville VFW Post 7059. He was a charter member of the Farmville Area Farmers Market, member of Southslde Lodge No. 191 A.F&A.M. of Pamplln, past Patron of the Robert Morris Chapter 150 of the O.E.S. in Farmville, member of Pamplin Chapter 58 of the O.E.S. and the Farmville Chapter of the Gideon's International.
   He is survived by his wife. Frances Cartwright Moore; his son, the Rev. Wayne Cartwright Moore and wife, Lorrie; two grandsons, Benjamin Cartwright Moore and Timothy Wayne Moore all of Mathews; his sister, Beth M. Richardson and husband, Randolph of Pamplin; niece, Sara Henderson and husband, Jeff; nephew, Terry Richardson and wife, Tammy; several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews and a special friend, Louise Layne of Onemo.
   Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

Hilda Virginia Hubbard Mahan, 86

Died Friday

   RICE, March 21 - Hilda Virginia Hubbard Mahan, 86, of Rice, died Friday, March 17, 2006.
   She was born December 14, 1919 at Avondale Farm, Prince Edward County, to the late Harry Hunter Hubbard and Margaret Estelle Wilson Hubbard. Two sisters, Janie H. Jones and Marian H. Carrington also preceded her In death.
   Survivors include her husband of 59 years, James H. Mahan of Rice; daughter. Donna M. Browning and son-in-law, Robert A. Browning of Farmville; two grandsons, Marcus R. Browning and wife, Sarah of Farmville and Whitney P. Browning and wife. Heather of Leesburg and two great-granddaughters, Lucy Blair Browning and Mary Elizabeth Browning of Farmville; two sisters, Mamie H. McClenny of Rice and Chesta H. Morrissette of Burkeville and one brother, H. Fielder Hubbard of Surfside Beach, South Carolina.
   After attending State Teachers College in Farmville, Mrs. Mahan graduated from Richmond Business School. She was a World War II veteran, serving in the Woman's Army Corps from 1942 to 1945.
   In 1959, she began working in the Prince Edward County Treasurer's office, serving as Deputy Treasurer from 1967 until 1975 and as Treasurer of Prince Edward County from 1975 until 1983. She was a past member of the Treasurers' Association for Virginia, the Virginia Association of Local Elected Constitutional Officers and was a charter member of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Washington, DC. Mrs. Mahan was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church in Rice.
   A memorial service was held 11 a.m. today (Tuesday) at Pisgah Baptist Church.

   CUMBERLAND, March 21 - Mary Asal Fahrner Lynn, 92, of Cumberland, formerly of Farmville and Louisa County, died Saturday, March 18, 2006 in UVA Hospital after a brief illness.
   She was the daughter of the late Phillip and Elizabeth Asal. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Katherine "Kitty" Moody and sisters, Freida Mann and Hulda Ranson.
   She is survived by three children. Walter M. "Dickie" Fahrner and wife, Regina of Cumberland, Delbert E. Fahrner and wife, Eloise of Hewitt, Texas and Geraldine "Jerri" Lane and husband, Roger of Richmond; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elizabeth Newman, Amelia Gillespie and Louise Bethel all of Cumberland and her devoted caregivers, Denise Stout and Amanda Nixon of Buckingham.
   Funeral services were held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Shorter Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Herb Brockel officiating. Interment followed in the Seventh Day Adventist Church Cemetery, Cumberland.

Anthony Jackson, 53

Dies Monday

   MARCH 16 - Anthony "Crip" Irvin Jackson, 53, died Monday, March 13, 2006 at University Park Nursing Home in Richmond.
   He was born September 16, 1952 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Irving and Leona Washington Jackson.
   He attended Beulah AME Church with his father and later became a member of Race Street Baptist Church. He served as an usher until his health began to deteriorate.
He graduated from Prince Edward County High School in 1971 and attended Virginia State University in Petersburg.
   Mr. Jackson worked at DuPont Fibers Plant in Richmond for 15 years and then worked as a car salesman in Farmville until he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was very outgoing, an avid lover of sports and an excellent cook.
   He is survived by a daughter, Kathy M. Spurlock of Richmond; two sons, Shawn A. Jackson of Richmond and Karsheen Paige of Farmville: a son-in-law, Daryl Spurlock; four grandchildren, India, Donovan and Anya Spurlock and Julius Jackson; God brother, Novey Wiley Jr.;God sister, Margaret Owens; beloved cousins, Rudolph and Barbara DePass, Lloyd and Mae Jackson and Elder Novey Sr. and Geraldine Wiley; a devoted friend, Juanita Beasley and a host of cousins, friends and neighbors.
   A funeral service will be held 12 noon Friday at Race Street Baptist Church, Farmville, with the Rev. James H. Taylor, III, pastor, officiating.

   MARCH 21 - Lucilla White Whitted of Masonboro Sound Road, died on Thursday, March 16,2006.
   She was born on April 12, 1914 in Churchville, the daughter of the late Dr. William Chester White and Martha Finley White.
   She graduated from Mary Baldwin College and received her masters degree from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education. She came to Wilmington as Director of Christian Education at the Church of the Covenant, now known as St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church.
   While in Wilmington, North Carolina she met and married the late Dr. Joseph Willard Whitted. During his military service, they lived in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where she taught school. Later while in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, she served as Director of Christian Education at University Presbyterian Church.
   Until their retirement to Masonboro Sound, they made their home in Hampden-Sydney where he taught. While there, she was active in church and community affairs, including serving as a ruling elder at College Church. After returning to Wilmington, she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, also the Cape Fear Garden Club, and the Thursday Morning Music Club.
   She is survived by a son, Joseph W. Whitted Jr. and his wife, Lynda McIver Whitted; a granddaughter, Anne Emerson Whitted; a sister, Elisabeth Willard and her husband, Emerson Willard; and a large extended family.
   A memorial service was held on Sunday, March 19 at First Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Dr. Ernest Trice Thompson, III.

Dies March 3

   Donald Richard Ortner, Frankenmuth, Michigan, son of Richard J. and Caroline (Deuring) Ortner, was born September 2, 1922, in Bay City and died at his home on March 3, 2006. He was received as a child of God through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism in Emanuel Lutheran Church of Bay City. Growing up in Frankenmuth, he attended St. Lorenz Lutheran School and renewed the covenant made by his baptismal sponsors as he was confirmed in St. Lorenz Evangelical Lutheran Church on Palm Sunday 1936. He married Gertrude Martha Stoekli, a professional musician and Christian Day School teacher, of Wonewoc, Wise., on June 29, 1947, in Bethany Lutheran Church, Milwaukee. The Lord blessed this union with one child, Stephen Richard Edward Ortner, of Frankenmuth.
   Donald Ortner attended preparatory school at Michigan Lutheran Seminary, Saginaw. He was graduated from the following institutions of higher learning: Northwestern College (B.A.), Illinois Wesleyan University (B. Mus.), Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary (theological diploma), Eastern Michigan University (M.A.) Virginia Commonwealth University (M.S.), and Michigan State University (Ph.D.).
   He was ordained on September 14,1947, to the ministry at St. John's Luthern Church, Toronto, Ontario, a congregation of the English District of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. He served full-time in the ministry at Toronto; Winnipeg, Manitoba; St. Catharines, Ontario; and Waltz, Mich. During this time, he also served part-time on vacant congregations in Brandon, McCreary and Woodridge, Manitoba, and Jordan, Ontario.
   He then entered the teaching profession, first as a high school teacher of Latin and guidance counselor at St. Johns, Mich.; then as a college professor of psychology and sociology and college psychologist at Hampden-Sydney, Va., for 43 years, seven of which he was also dean of students. During his time as a teacher. Dr. Ortner continued to serve either as a vacancy pastor or as a part-time pastor in Pontiac and East Lansing, Mich.; Sioux City, la.;Blue Bell, Pa.; and Farmville, Meherrin, and Salem, Va.
   There survive to mourn his passing his wife of 59 years and son Stephen, both of Frankenmuth, and a host of relatives and friends. A sister Martha predeceased him in 1999.
   Funeral service took place March 8 at Cederberg Funeral Home and St. Lorenz Lutheran Church. The Rev. Mark Brandt officiated with Dr. David Ritt representing the English District, with committal preceding in St. Lorenz Cemetery, where five generations of Dr. Ortner's family are buried, awaiting the return of our Lord and the resurrection of life eternal.
   It was Dr. Ortner's wish that those who feel they would like to make a memorial contribution might send this to the school that continues to ready young people for work in the Kingdom:

   Saturday, March 11, 2006 Wilhelmenia D. Washington of Cumberland, Virginia passed away quietly.

   She is survived by her three daughters, Cynthia Thornton, of Cumberland, Virginia; Lisa Thornton, of Cumberland, Virginia; and Sharon Johnson, of Chesterfield, Virginia.

   Sister Simone Morton, brothers Joe C. Washington Jr. and Tyrone Washington.

   Seven grandchildren, Shaleta, JaVonté, Dakota, Dante, Kirby, Issac Jr., and Marcus.

    She was preceded in death by her late father, Joe C. Washington Sr., mother Mary Washington, and sister Gloria Scott.

   Mrs. Washington after retiring from Cumberland County Public Schools, with 30 years of service, continued to be an active part of the school. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels in the Cumberland area. In addition to her family she leaves behind numerous friends and loved ones.

   A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. March 17, 2006 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Cumberland County.

   MARCH 14 - The Lord called home his precious angel, Estelle Parker Holmes, 91, of Farmville, on Monday, March 13, 2006.
   She was born in Amelia County, the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Annie Davis Parker. She was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Holmes.
   Mrs. Holmes worked for Craddock-Terry Shoe Company for 38 years. She was a lifetime active member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a volunteer at Southslde Community Hospital Gift Shop where she had rendered over 7,800 hours. She was actively involved with the bingo session at Holly Manor Nursing Home, contributing to the "Older Folks".
   She is survived by two daughters, Patty Tomlin and husband. Warren of Madison Heights and Nancy H. Hall of Jacksonville, Florida; six grandchildren, Mike Tomlin and wife, Julie, Randy Tomlin and wife, Janet, Michelle Dodd and fiancé, Francis Wayne Ellis, Warren Lee Tomlin, David Johnson and wife, Kris and Paul John-son; three step-grandchildren, Tammy Nelson and husband, Red, Amy Swanson and husband, Derrick and Jamie Deskins and wife, Krystal; five great-grandchildren.    Mr. LeSueur was a Buck Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and earned a Bronze Star. He retired from the Solite Corporation.

   WILLIAMSBURG, March 16 - Julia Carol Hall, 67, of Williamsburg, went to her eternal home on Monday, March 13, 2006 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.
   She was born May 20, 1938 in Bertie County, North Carolina and has been a resident of Williamsburg since 1977. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as a child and was a faithful member of Walnut Hills Baptist Church since 1978.
   Mrs. Hall's passing was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Adelia Dunlow, her two brothers, E. C. and Spencer Dunlow all of North Carolina and her son, David Hall.
   She is survived by her husband, Frank N. Hall of Williamsburg; her two sisters, Jurlean "Jerri" Rhea Cook of Buckingham County and Frances Hughes of Fort Wayne, Indiana; two children, Beckie Lee Campbell of Fredericksburg and Randy Hall of New York; two grandchildren, Aaron and Brwyan Campbell of Fredericksburg and numerous nieces, nephews and friends whom she loved and who will miss her dearly.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg.

Audrey E. Shadeline, 91

   MARCH 16 - Audrey Elizabeth Shadeline, a resident of Farmville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 14, 2006. She was 91 years old.
   Mrs. Shadeline was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Rocky Grove High School and attended Welches Business College in Oil City, Pennsylvania.
   In September, 1934 she married Harold Shadeline. In 1940 she and her husband moved to Baltimore, Maryland. After her husband joined the army In 1944, she worked for the Friez Instrument Division of Bendix Aviation Corporation for the duration of World War II, at which time her husband returned from Germany, where he was a Prisoner of War. The following year, Mrs. Shadeline went to work for the Hecht Company, where she worked until she retired ten years later.
   While in Baltimore, Mrs. Shadeline was an active member of Arlington Presbyterian Church before moving to Charlestown Retirement Community and Joining Charlestown United Protestant Church. After moving to Farmville, Mrs. Shadeline enjoyed attending Concord Baptist Church. She was active in the Auxiliary of The Gideon's International and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
   She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Harold A. Shadeline; one daughter, Ann Owings and three grandchildren, Jenny Owings, Becky Owings and Jon Owings.
   Mrs. Shadeline was a devoted wife and mother who was a devout Christian. She enjoyed writing, cooking, reading and sewing. She will be remembered for her enduring faith, generosity, thoughtfulness and service toward others.
Visitation was held at the Owings residence in Farmville on Thursday.
   Funeral services will be held 12 noon Friday at the Shorter Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Rick Caldwell. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia.

   NORTH CAROLINA, March 16 - Anne Walters Robeson, 83, died Monday, March 13, 2006 at the Outer Banks Hospital.
   Born in Sante Fe, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Ethel Etheridge Walters. She lived in Farmville for 30 years before retiring to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1978.
   Mrs. Robeson worked for IBM during World War II storing ammunition for the Wolf Creek Ordinance Plant in Tennessee and was a member of St. Andrews By-The-Sea Episcopal Church.
   She is survived by her husband, J. Meredith Robeson of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a daughter, Elizabeth Bonnar and husband, James of Gloucester Point; a son. Jack M. Robeson and wife, Sharon of Mechanicsville and four grandchildren, Heather A. Bonnar of Manteo, NC, Scot M. Bonnar of Gloucester Point, Sarah K. Robeson and Jay M. Robeson both of Arlington.

   Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, Cartersville. The Rev. Leroy McLaughlin, pastor and the Rev. Joe Allen Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
