Dies Wednesday

   MARCH 2 - Annie L. Woodruff, 89, of Farmville, formerly of the Jackson Heights area, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006.
   She was born in Farmville on July 20, 1916, the daughter of the late James M. and Nannie Flippin Woodruff.
   Miss Woodruff was a retired employee of Roses Department Store and Baldwin Department Store. She was a graduate of College High School in Farmville.
   She is survived by four nephews, James Smith, Robert Smith, Donald Smith and William Smith. She was preceded in death by a sister, Patty W. Smith and Infant brother, James M. Woodruff Jr.
   The family will receive friends at Farmville Baptist Church on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by funeral services at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Cheuk officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery.

   DILLWYN, March 2 - Ernest Lee Godsey, 90, of Dillwyn, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006.
   He was the son of the late John R. and Alberta Taylor Godsey and the widower of Louise Taylor Godsey.
   He is survived by two sons, Norah Godsey and his wife, Shiree of Maryland and Billy Godsey of Dillwyn; a sister, Lou Brownlee of Dillwyn; a brother,. Wilbur "Billy" Godsey of Dillwyn; a daughter-in-law, Elinor Godsey of Farmville; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
   A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Dillwyn, with Interment in the Dillwyn Town Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

Clifton E. Hamlett, 79
Brother of Local
Resident, Dies

   MARTINSVILLE, March 2 - Clifton E. Hamlett, 79, of Martinsville, died Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at Memorial Hospital, Martinsville.
   He was a son of the late Jesse W. Hamlett and Minnie Dodd Hamlett.
   Mr. Hamlett was a member of Turning Point Baptist Church and served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II.
   He is survived by a brother, Marion Hamlett of Darlington Heights: two sisters, Elizabeth H. Biggs of Ridgeway and Gertrude H. Slayton of Lynchburg. He was preceded In death by two sisters. Grace H. Holley and Alese H. Estepp and one brother, Aubrey Hamlett Sr.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 3, at Mill Creek Baptist Church, Henry, with the Rev. Tom Wilson and the Rev. Tom Teems officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) at Community Funeral Service Chapel, Ridgeway.

Pastor Wyatt Venable, 68
Of Pamplin
Dies Thursday

   PAMPLIN, March 2 - Pastor Wyatt Thomas Venable Sr., 68, of Pamplin, died Thursday, February 23, 2006 at his home after an extended illness.
   He was born September 28, 1937 in Charlotte County, to the late Emmanuel and Nannie Louise Venable.
   Pastor Venable attended and graduated from Liberty University Bible Institute and South-side Community College. He served as Pastor at New Store, Hickory Grove, Chestnut Grove, and Mt. Moriah Baptist Churches. He also served as interim Pastor at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church. He was currently serving as the Assistant Pastor at Peaceful Grove Baptist. He served as president of the United Minister's Conference of Pamplin and Vicinity for 21 years. He was a member of the Farmville Minister's Conference. He co-founded Faith In Action of Pamplin. Pastor Venable also served as Southside Community Hospital Chaplain and Hospice member. He was instrumental in establishing the DARE program at Prince Edward Middle School.
   He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Minerva Allen Venable; two daughters, Connie (Steve) Smith of Roanoke and Clarice (Anthony) Ellison of Gloucester; one son, Wyatt (Geraldine) Venable Jr. of Richmond; three brothers, James Venable of Roanoke, Pastor William (Florine) Venable of Nathalie and Anthony Haskins of Pamplin; a devoted Godmother, Lessie Thompson; Goddaughter, Patricia Carter and Godson, Woodrow Haskins Jr.; five sisters-in-law; eight brothers-in-law; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five aunts; three uncles; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends and devoted caregivers, Henry and Theresa Home.
   Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday at White Oak Grove Baptist Church, Phenix, with interment in the church cemetery.

   RICE, March 2 - Mabel E. Nunnally, of Rice, died Sunday, February 19, 2006.
   She was born June 2, 1917 In Prince Edward County, to the late George G. and Callie B. Marshall.
   Mrs. Nunnally was educated In the public schools of Prince Edward County and Edgemere, Maryland. She was the former church clerk of the High Rock Baptist Church of Rice and served in that position for 26 years.
   She was employed by the Prince Edward County School System as an assistant cook for 23 years. She retired from the school system in 1988.
   She is survived by her children, Shirley (Vincent) Earley of Keysville, Vance (Annie) Nunnally, Robert (Mary) Nunnally, Roy Nunnally, Charles (Vivian) Nunnally, Melvin (Mattie) Nunnally of Rice; her sister. Evangelist Callie M. Jenklns of Catonsville, Maryland; ten grandchildren, Robert Jr., Carolyn, LaTreasa, Angela, Keita, Sharrod, Katrita, Darryl, Christopher, Lakara and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace H. Nunnally and a grandson, Kevin Nunnally.
   A funeral service was held 1 p.m. Friday at High Rock Baptist Church of Rice, followed by interment in the church cemetery.
   The Carl U. Eggleston Funeral Establishment assisted the family with arrangements.

   DILLWYN, Feb. 28 - Nathlie N. Duty, 72, of Dillwyn, died Saturday, February 25, 2006.
   She was the daughter of the late Robert R. Nuckoles and Alma Wright Nuckoles and was preceded in death by her first husband, DeWitt Eutsler, a brother and a sister.
   Mrs. Duty was a graduate of Wilson Memorial High School in 1950 and the King Daughters Nursing School.
   She is survived by her husband. Ray L. Duty; two sisters, Mrs. Johnny (Juanlta) Chandler of Stuarts Draft and Mrs. Dennis (Doris) Riley of Staunton; a brother. Randy Nuckoles of Hadensville; four stepsons, Billy Eutsler of Newport News, Eddie Eutsler of Verona, Homer Eutsler of Staunton and Elmer Eutsler of Staunton.

Effie Webster Reed

   It is with deepest sorrow that Effie Reed (nee Webster) of Willingboro, NJ, formerly of Philadelphia, PA departed this earthly life on February 1, 2006 at Virtua Memorial Hospital, Mount Holly, NJ. She departed us at the age of 75.
   Effie was the daughter of the late Joseph and Fannie Webster of Farmville, VA. She lived and worked most of her adult life in Philadelphia, PA. Effie retired from Mellon Bank after many wonderful years of service. After failing health, she moved to Willingboro, NJ in 2001.
   Her loving husband, Charles Reed and beloved son, Gregory, preceded Effie in death. She leaves behind to cherish her memory one sister, Arline W. Brown, Camden, NJ; one brother, Claudius C. Webster; one sister-in-law, Doris E. Webster, Willingboro, NJ; a special niece, Charlene Welton, Black-wood, NJ, many nieces, nephews, brothers & sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends. Also left behind to cherish her memory Ethel Fisher, Farmville, VA; Marcel (Oscar) Pratt; Juanita Lloyd and Lula Crossen, from Philadelphia, PA.
   The family will truly miss her loving smile and deep-hearted laugh. We rejoice that she is with her heavenly father.

Pauline Yancey Jones

   Pauline Yancey Jones, 83, of Arvonia, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2006 at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville.
   She is survived by her loving husband, T. Lester Jones, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raleigh Thomas Kendall. She was the daughter of William Thomas Yancey and Elizabeth Christian Yancey.
   Pauline led an active life in the community. She was a member of the local Daughters of the Revolution. She had a distinguished career as a Title I Instructional assistant teacher at Gold Hill Elementary School for over fifteen years, she worked with her longtime friend, Mrs. Marie Johnson on this project.
   She was very active in the community. She spearheaded the construction of the John H. Cocke Memorial Bridge, she used her position in the community and the Buckingham County School system to be an advocate for countless youth and underprivileged families.
   Though Pauline never had children of her own, she was mother to so many of the children in the school system and the community. She was one of the first to realize the strength in integrating the school and community as a whole.
   A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 22 at Bethel Baptist Church in Palmyra. The Reverend Buddy Woodson will officiate. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
   Interment will be at 11 a.m., Thursday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
   The family requests memorial donations be made to Buckingham Rescue Squad or Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund.
   Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, is in charge of the arrangements.

   CUMBERLAND, Feb. 23 - Eddie Douglas Brown, 80, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, February 21, 2006 in Farmville.
   He is survived by his devoted wife, Lillie Alma Brown; a son, James Brown; two daughters, Lela Robinson and Sandra Evans Woodley; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three brothers. Earl, Russell (Comoria) and Carl Brown (Doris); two daughters-in-law, Cecelia and Christine Brown; a son-in-law, Phillip Woodley; four brothers-in-law. Warren, Levy, Jacob and Joseph Langhorne; nieces, great-nieces, great-great-nieces, nephews, one devoted, Kenny Brown, great-nephews; great-great-nephews and cousins and friends.
   Funeral services will be held Saturday 1 p.m. at Rocky Mount Baptist Church, Cumberland with the Rev. Larry E. Smith, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Native, Dies

   WASHINGTON, DC, Feb. 23 - Dorothy Allen Pamepinto, of Washington, DC, died Wednesday, February 22, 2006.
   Mrs. Pamepinto, whose family history dates back to 1608 in Jamestown, was born and raised in Cumberland County. She graduated from Longwood College in 1939 and taught school for several years before moving to Washington, DC. She moved to Ormond Beach, Florida in 1977 with her husband, Charles, and returned to live In Washington in 2003.
   She was a member of the Society of F.B.I. Alumni, Daughters of the American Revolution, Cumberland County Historical Society and the First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach, having served on its altar guild for many years.
   Her husband, Charles, passed away August 5, 2001 after nearly 50 years of marriage.
   Survivors include a son, Peter A. of Nanjemoy, MD; a daughter, Sharon Light and son-in-law, Paul Light of Bethesda, MD; a brother, Vernon Allen of Roanoke; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch United Methodist Church, with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until time of service.
   Memorial donations may be made to St. Ann's infant and Maternity Home, Washington, DC.
