Dies Thursday
JANUARY 5 - Grace Long
Jones, 97, of Farmville, died Thursday, January 5, 2006.
She was the daughter of the late Labana
Washington Long and Theresa Jane Harkleroad.
Mrs. Jones was a member of Browns Presbyterian
Church and the DAR.
She is survived by three daughters, Genevieve
Bobko and husband, Stephen and Nancy Pempel and husband, Daniel both of
Farmville and Etha Kriner and husband, Fred of Lutherburg. PA; 12 grandchildren
and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jane
McCullough and a great-grandson, Nicholas Kuntz.
The family will receive friends on Friday
evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11
a.m. at Browns Presbyterian Church
The family will also receive friends at the
Deedley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney, PA, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on
Sunday. Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. with interment in Pleasant Hill
Cemetery, Punxsutawney.

BUCKINGHAM, Jan. 5
-Charles R. "Root" Crump, 72, of Buckingham, died Wednesday, January 4, 2006.
Mr. Crump was a logger for over 45 years.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jean Ramsey
Crump; a daughter, Phyllis Jean Cumbie and her husband. Henry; a sister, Bertha
Hedgepeth; two brothers, Joe and Dewey Crump and nieces and nephews all of
Buckingham.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Concord Baptist Church, near
Sheppards, with the Rev. Rick Caldwell officiating. Burial will be in the church
cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening
from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville.

JANUARY 5 - Edward Darnell
Foster, 49, of Hampton, formerly of Cumberland, died Monday, January 2, 2006.
He is survived by his loyal wife, Jacqueline Foster; a
daughter, April; a son, Joshua; his parents, Richard and Georgia Foster: four
brothers, Michael Allen (Jackie), Lowell Foster (Daisy), Jeffrey Foster (Angle)
and Christopher Foster (Phyllis); a sister, Emma Watson; two sisters-in-law,
Robin Blount and Florence Alien (Bruce); three brothers-in-law, Marvin Barnes
(Rhonda), James Russell Blount (Kay) and Calvin Blount (Lavern) and a host of
aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Rocky

Trent; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, one devoted, Eva
Langhorne.

JANUARY 5 - Frederick
Earl Garrett Sr., 81, of Farmville, formerly of South Boston, died Tuesday,
January 3, 2006 at Holly Manor Nursing Home.
He was born in South Boston June 10, 1924, a son
of the late Johnnie I. Garrett and Madge Lambeth Garrett.
Mr. Garrett was a member of the Scottsburg
Baptist Church, Faulkner Memorial Masonic Lodge #91, Gideon International and
Robert Morris Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #80.
He is survived by his wife, Ernestine Long
Garrett of Farmville; one daughter. Patsy Garrett Watson and husband, Gene
Watson of Farmville; one son, Frederick Earl Garrett Jr. and wife, Anita Smith
Garrett of Green Creek, Arizona; six grandchildren, Eleanor Watson Ross of
Richmond, Garrett Ford Watson of Radford, Patrick Larkin Watson of Dillwyn,
Casey Marie Watson of Farmville, Luke Christopher Garrett and Nicole Smith both
of Green Creek, Arizona.
A memorial service with Masonic Rites will be
held Monday, January 9 at 11 a.m. at Scottsburg Baptist Church with the Rev.
Terry Scearce and the Rev. Dr. Michael Cheuk. A family reception and meal will
follow the service at the church.

John F. Martin, 64
Formerly of Farmville
Dies December 18
JANUARY 5 - John F.
Martin died Sunday, December 18, 2005, surrounded by family after a long battle
with heart disease.
Born on December 12, 1941 to John Sr. and Edith
Martin in Fredericksburg, the third of five children, he grew up in Farmville,
joining the Navy as a teenager.
Mr. Martin served 17 years as a radio technician
traveling the world with the Navy before settling in Vancouver in 1977.
Afterwards, he worked for Western Union, Pacific Telecom and Alaska
Telecommunications as a circuit design engineer. He was an avid amateur radio
enthusiast and long time member of the local VFW. A loving husband and father,
he was known for his good humor and generosity and will be dearly missed by
those who loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Teresa;
his children, Dan and Diane; two sisters, Mary Jane and Cindy and a brother,
Steven. He was preceded In death by a sister, Kathleen Martin Higgins.
A celebration of life was held 1 p.m. Wednesday
at All Saints Episcopal Church in Hazel Dell.

Born in Buckingham County, March 17, 1941, she
was a daughter of the late Edward and Lottie Kidd Savage. She was the wife of
the late Neal Mace.
Mrs. Mace was a member of Spears Mountain Baptist
Church.
She is survived by a son, Timmy Mace of
Cumberland;
two daughters, Cindy Wingfield and her husband. Mark of Dillwyn and Krissy
Wooten and her husband, James of Farmville; a brother, Hal Savage of Gladstone;
two sisters, Helen Lee of Florida and Barbara Stephens of Gladstone; a
stepmother, Lucy Savage of Buckingham; two half sisters, Bernell and Frances; 11
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a
daughter, Karen Elgin.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at
Robinson Funeral Home, Appomattox, by the Rev. Buddy Bryant. Burial will follow
in the Savage Family Cemetery, Buckingham.

Jennie W. Whorley.
He is survived by a son, Samuel B. Whorley Jr. of
Chesterfield; a sister, Doris Lowery of Mechanicsville; one grandson and three
great-grandchildren.

sister, Cyndi P. Gable and her husband, Conis, their son, Chadd of Farmville;
her parents, Robert E. Potts of Fredericksburg and Violet Vaughan Potts of Crewe
and a devoted friend, Dale Riggins.

Walter S. Pearsall, 77
Of Cumberland
Dies Thursday
CUMBERLAND, Jan. 3 - Walter S. Pearsall, 77, of
Cumberland, formerly of Long Island, New York, died Thursday, December 29, 2005
at his home.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mar] one
Anne Tietz Pearsall; three children and families, David Pearsall and his wife,
Denise of Springfield and their children, Melanie and Brian, Keith Pearsall and
his wife, Janet of Oceanside, New York and their children, Christopher and
Deborah, Susan Pearsall Farrell and her husband, Donald of Powhatan and their
children, Meghan, Emily and Jessica Grace.
Mr. Pearsall graduated from East Rockaway High
School in East Rockaway, New York in 1945. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the
United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country in World War II and
Korea. He graduated from Adelphi University in 1956 with a BA in Physics and
from Hofstra University in 1958 with a Masters Degree. He was employed in the
Engineering Department of Republic Aviation for several years and later for
Oceanside High School in Oceanside, New York, where he taught physics, chemistry
and mathematics for 32 years and served as the chairman of the Science
Department for many years.
Mr. Pearsall was an active member of the Church
of the Ascension in Rockville Centre, New York for many years, served as scout
leader for the Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the Marine Corps
League. He and his wife relocated to Cumberland in 1990, where he was an active
member of the Cumberland Fire Department, American Legion Post 269 and served on
the Vestry and other committees at Johns Memorial Episcopal Church In Farmville.
He was a member and past president of the Grove Cemetery Association.
A Christian Prayer Service was held 7 p.m.
Monday evening at the Shorter Funeral Home Chapel, Farmville.
A Christian Burial Service with Eucharist was
held 10 a.m. today (Tuesday) at Johns Memorial Episcopal Church with Father
Edward Tracy and Father Bill Blottner officiating. A graveside funeral service
with full military honors was held at 12 noon at the Grove Cemetery in
Cumberland.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cumberland
Volunteer Fire Department or to Johns Memorial Episcopal Church.

RICHMOND, Jan. 3 - Ruth Weldon Bradshaw, a
resident of Westminster Canterbury, died Thursday, December 29, 2005, two days
after celebrating her 90th birthday with her family.
Her survivors include, Clyde W. Bradshaw, her
husband of 62 years; two children, Ann Bradshaw and Weldon Bradshaw (Emily) both
of Richmond; six grandchildren, Jay Bradshaw (Jennifer) of Cantonment, FL, David
Bradshaw, Amy Bradshaw and Zachary Bradshaw all of Richmond, Catherine Robertson
(Chris) of Durham, NC and Taylor Bode of Richmond and two great-grandchildren,
Joshua and Grace Bradshaw of Cantonment, FL.
A native of Louisville, KY, Mrs. Bradshaw was the
daughter of the Rev. John Wood Weldon and Mattie Carter McKeldin. She earned an
undergraduate degree in music from Western Kentucky University and a masters in
musicology from The Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. For many years she was
active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and served in a variety of
capacities at the local and state levels. She loved music, travel, genealogical
research, reading, needlepoint and gardening. Mainly though, she loved her
family and has left a wonderful legacy of caring and love for her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held 11 a.m.
Saturday in The Commons at Westminster Canterbury. Interment was held 11 a.m.
Monday in the Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery, Rice.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster
Canterbury Foundation.

Gall Joiner, 60, of Wingina, died Wednesday, December 28, 2005 at her residence.
Born in Orlando, Florida, November 17, 1945, she
was a daughter of the late Harvey Hendricks Joiner and Betty Jane Robinson.
She is survived by a sister, Kathryn V. Repass
and her husband, Jim of Wingina; a brother, Gilbert Joiner of Richmond; a niece,
Evonne Marshall of Lynchburg and two nephews, Paul and Matthew Marshall and
families both of Hershey, PA. She was preceded in death by a brother, Michael
Lee Joiner.

Sanders Harvey, 46, of Richmond, went home to be with the Lord.
Surviving are his grandmother, Elna Green of Washington, DC;
mother, Jeanell Watson of Farmville; two brothers, William Watson (Cynthia) of
Temple Hills, MD and Alton Harvey of Farmville; sister, Teresa Harris (Gary) of
Temple Hills, MD; a devoted friend, Karen Carey and her daughter, Anjelica
"Angel" and a host of other relatives and friends.
