Richard V. Garnett, 92
Dairy Farmer
Dies Tuesday
RICE, Dec. 29 - Richard Venable Garnett, 92, of
Rice, died Tuesday, December 27, 2005.
He was born in Prince Edward County, a son of the
late Mary Price Garnett and Lockett Wilson Garnett.
Mr. Garnett operated Garnett Brothers Dairy Farm
with his brother, James Watkins Garnett. He was a lifelong member of Jamestown
Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and treasurer of Sunday School for
30 years.
He is survived by six nieces and nephews,
Marjorie Ann King, Marie Kephart, Lockett Garnett, Blair Garnett, Jimmy Garnett
and L. W. Garnett; two sisters-in-law, Byrd Wootton Garnett and Elizabeth
Simpson Garnett and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. today
(Thursday) at Jamestown Presbyterian Church with interment in Pisgah Baptist
Church Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Jamestown
Presbyterian Church, Rice, VA 23966.

Billy David Keys, 73
Father of Area
Resident, Dies
HUDDLESTON, Dec. 29 -Billy David Keys, 73, of
Huddleston, passed away Monday, December 26, 2005, at Lynchburg General Hospital
after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jerrie Wood Keys.
He was born on January 18, 1932, in Rose Hill, to
the late A. A. and Kitty Brooks Keys. In addition to his parents, he is
predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Frank C. Keys, Ray H. Keys, Launa K.
Jones, Daphne K. Orem, and Blanche K. Sanders. He proudly served his country in
the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from the Lynchburg
Foundry with 31 years of service.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his
pride and joy, his children, David N. Keys of Huddleston, Jeffrey A. Keys and
his wife, Lisa N. Keys, of Madison, MS, Marcia K. Sink and her husband, Gary A.
Sink, Jr., of Green Bay, and Pattle K. Clevenger and her husband, Todd, of
Troutville. The apples of his eyes were his six grandchildren, Katharina V. Keys
of Nashville, TN, Emilie N. Sink and Allyson P. Sink of Green Bay, Lilli J.
Clevenger and Patrick T. Clevenger of Troutville, and Emma A. Keys of Madison,
MS; his brothers and sisters, Neal Keys of Marietta, GA, Stella K. Orton of
Charlotte Hall, MD, Becky (Toots) Mink and her husband, Marvin, of Prattville,
AL, and Sue Keys and Joseph R. Keys of Broad Run; a very special sister-in-law
and her husband, Faye and Jerry Rosenberger, of Lynchburg, as well as numerous
nieces and nephews.
The funeral was at Bethlehem Baptist Church today
(Thursday) December 29, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Tim Dooley and Steve Martin
presiding. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Dies Wednesday
DILLWYN, Dec. 27 - Carol Davenport, 64, of
Dillwyn, wife of the late John W. "Bill" Davenport, died Wednesday, December 21,
2005 at her home.
She is the daughter of Harriet Wimberly of
Biloxi, Mississippi and the late John H. Wimberly.
Mrs. Davenport owned and operated Davenport's
Engraving in Buckingham along with her husband until his death in 2001. She was
a member of Browns Chapel United Methodist Church in Dillwyn.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by
three daughters, Teresa Mann of Dillwyn, Lisa Hodge of Bedford and Cindy Roland
of Dillwyn; one son, Terry Davenport of Denver, Colorado; her sons-in-law, Doug
Mann and Jimmy Roland of Dillwyn: her grandchildren, Erin and Chad Mann of
Dillwyn, James, Jullie and Daniel Hodge of Bedford and Angela Stovall of
Virginia Beach; her sisters, Diane Carpenter of Biloxi, Mississippi, Kathy
Wimberly of Venetia, Pennsylvania, Bobbi Harbrecht of Biloxi, Mississippi and
Vicki Wimberly of Aurora, Colorado.
Services will be held Wednesday, December 28 at 2
p.m. at Browns Chapel United Methodist Church, Dillwyn.

Dies Sunday
DECEMBER
27 - Richard L. "Pete" Ramsey, 66, of Farmville, died Sunday, December 25, 2005.
He was born September 19, 1939 in Jackson County,
West Virginia, a son of the late Dewy William Ramsey and Ona Bertha MacDoughna
Ramsey. He was a loving husband and father.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy N. Ramsey; his
children, Sharon Ramsey of New York, Laura Ramsey and Sarah Ramsey both of
California, Richard Pacheco of Rhode Island, Mary Liegey, Elizabeth Lettshek and
Douglas York, III all of Richmond; two sisters, Ada Scar-berry and Mary Fraizer;
a brother, Raymond Ramsey and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at
Bethlehem Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

Obituary
of
Richard Leslie Heinemann
Dr. Richard Leslie Heinemann, 74, died at his home in Cumberland
County on December 15, 2005 following a lengthy illness.
A Longwood College professor emeritus. Dr.
Heinemann taught natural sciences and genetics for 30 years before
his retirement in 1992. He liked to use the Socratic Method of
teaching, asking questions to get a rational answer. A native of
Scotia, New York, he attended Scotia public schools. He earned his
bachelor's degree from Champlain College, Plattsburg, New York, his
master's degree from the University of Rochester, and his PhD from
the Medical College of Virginia.
He served in the U.S. Army and the Reserves for
eight years. During his 30-year tenure at Longwood, Dr. Heinemann
served on faculty committees, published scientific articles, and was
a member of The American Association for the Advancement of Science,
The American Institute of Biological Science, Sigma XI, The Society
for the Study of Evolution, and The Virginia Academy of Science.
Dr. Heinemann was a caring, loving husband and
father. He enjoyed planting and tending his garden of unusual plants
and flowers, and observing the many birds that visited his garden.
He loved classical music, especially Beethoven. He was loyal to his
friends and enjoyed his Lunch/Talk group every Friday in Richmond.
Dr. Heinemann was preceded in death by his parents, John Robert and
Edithe Kornetske Heinemann; and his brothers, Robert and Fred. He is
survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Perry Heinemann; and a
daughter, Anne Becket Heinemann Wilkins of Farmville.
A memorial service and reception will be held at
the Farmville Presbyterian Church on January 14,2006, at 3 p.m.

Dies Tuesday
PROSPECT, Dec. 22 - Bill
Foster, 84, of Prospect, died Tuesday, December 20, 2005 in Farmville.
Mr. Foster was a farmer and a retired truck
driver for Prince Edward Mills. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou
Hensley Foster.
He is survived by two sons and their wives,
Willis and Eloise Foster of Farmville, Ray and Pat Foster of Prospect; a
daughter and her husband, Joyce and Frank Sweet of Dillwyn; two brothers,
Kenneth and Shelby Foster; a sister, Emma Landers all of Limestone, Tennessee;
nine grandchildren, Steve, Keith, Jessica, Kevin and Cindy Foster, Tammy Inks,
Kevin and Bryan Schley and Ginny Crenshaw; five great-grandchildren, Samantha
and Amanda Foster, Rachel Inks, Dylan Schley and Colin Foster Crenshaw.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at
Glenn Memorial Baptist Church in Prospect with the Reverends Dave Peppier, Bob
Edwards and Gary Stoots officiating. Interment will follow in the church
cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening

DECEMBER 22 - Matthew
McClannahan Spangler, 85, died Wednesday, December 14, 2005 in Farmville.
He was a resident of Lake Charles, Louisiana for
63 years and had recently moved to Hickory Hill Retirement Community in
Burkeville.
Mr. Spangler was a civil engineer and retired
from the Louisiana Department of Highways. He was an U.S. Army World War II
veteran and member of the W. B. Williamson American Legion and First Christian
Church. His wife, Gertrude Smith Spangler preceded him in death.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan Spangler
Simmons and her husband, David of Cumberland; a sister, June Anne Chewning of
Washington, DC;three grandsons, Glen M. Simmons and his wife, Carolyn of
Midlothian, David B. Simmons and his wife, Rhonda of Disputanta and Brian T.
Simmons and his wife, Katherine of Potomac, Maryland; four great-grandchildren,
Hannah, Russell, Sara and David Matthew; a niece, Pam Bravard and her husband.
Lance of Washington, DC and a nephew, Peter Chewning and his wife, Joanne of
Fairfax.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday,
January 7 at Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Farmville, with the Rev. Dale
Brown officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at the Highland
Memorial Gardens in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Lewis Francis, 88, of Farmville, died Sunday, December 18, 2005.
She was born November 18, 1917 in Farmville, a
daughter of the late Honorable John F. Lewis and Lillian Clayton Lewis.
She was a graduate of Longwood College with a
bachelors degree. She was a retiree of Dominion Resources where she served as
the Farmville District Office Administrative Assistant. She was a lifelong
member of Farmville United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for 17
years.
Mrs. Francis was a 50 year member, past Matron
and treasurer for 29 years of the Robert Morris Chapter #150, Order of the
Eastern Star. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and
held several offices in the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was also a
member of the Wednesday Senior Bowling Group and the twice monthly Neighborhood
Group.
She is survived by a daughter, Shannon Francis
Tate and her husband, Harold of Waynesboro; a grandson, H. Vernon Tate, III and
his wife. Lee Ann of Fredericksburg; a granddaughter, Suzzanne C. Tate and her
husband, Michael Barton of Athens, Georgia and two great-grandchildren, Garrett
Tate and Julianne Tate. She was preceded in death by a brother, John F. Lewis,
Jr.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at
Farmville United Methodist Church with interment in Westview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening
from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the church.

Born November 6, 1919 in Halifax County, she was
a daughter of the late Isemon and Rebecca Nichols Hall.
Mrs. Franklin was a member of Prospect United
Methodist Church and a former employee of Farmville Craddock & Terry and
Courtland Mfg. in Appomattox.
She is survived by a sister, Elsie McKinney of Lynchburg;
three sisters-in-law, Thelma, Louise and Emma; a number of nieces, nephews and a
host of friends.

Native, Dies at Age 103
LYNCHBURG, Dec. 20 -
Myrtle Chappell McCutchen, 103, of Westminster Canterbury where she lived since
July, 1980 and formerly of AltaVista, died Thursday, December 15, 2005. She was
the wife of the late Charles Benson McCutchen.
Born January 1, 1902, in Prince Edward County,
she was a daughter of the late William Edward Chappell and Janie Staples
Chappell. She was a charter member of Altavista Presbyterian Church and a
retired schoolteacher.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great
nieces, and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and
three sisters.
A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m.
Saturday, December 17 at Green Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Ralph Hawkins.

Timothy of Buena Vista; a brother. Ray R. Land of Andersonville: a longtime
companion, James R. Seay and four grandchildren.

Edward Griffith and the widower of Linda Hill Griffith.
Mr. Griffith was an U. S. Army Vietnam War
veteran, member of the VFW Post 7059, Curdsville Church of God and Sayler's
Creek Reenactment and Preservation Committee.
He is survived by a son. Staff Sergeant David
Griffith Jr., US Army of Midway Tennessee; two daughters, Charlene South-worth
of Lynchburg and Patricia Rousch of Prospect; nine grandchildren; three sisters,
Sharon Hickman of Buckingham, Susie Edwards of Sheppards and Nancy Lou Adklns of
Nottoway and a devoted friend, Louis Leonard of Cumberland.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at
Restoration Outreach Church, near Sprouses Corner, Buckingham with Pastors Wayne
Watkins, Louise Warner and Bill Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow in
Curdsville Church of God Cemetery with military honors.
