Dies Saturday


       NOVEMBER 24 - Kyle Jay Williams Sr., 60, of Farmville, died Saturday, November 19, 2005 in Greensboro, NC after a lengthy illness.
       He was the firstborn child of Jay Paul Williams and Carolyn Louise Warning Williams in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by a son, Kyle Jay Williams, Jr. and two sisters, Nan Margaret Williams and Arline Mae Pillows.
      He is survived by his devoted and beloved wife, Earlene F. Williams; a daughter, Mary Robin Pacelli of Victoria; his siblings, Tommy A. Williams of Vincentown, NJ, Susan E. Williams of Pemberton, NJ, Jay P. Williams Jr. of Mt. Holly, NJ, Carolyn L. Scull of Pemberton, NJ, Jeanne E. Williams of Central Square, NY, Russell W. Williams of Mahanoy City, PA, Harry W. Williams of Morea, PA and James D. Williams of Voorhees, NJ; maternal aunt, Jeanne E. Coombe of Doylestown, PA; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
       Mr. Williams served in the U.S. Navy in Cuba, Iceland and Vietnam and was a member of the VFW Post 7059 of Farmville, American Legion of Richmond, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Monsignor McMahon Council of Midlothian. 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus and the St. Theresa Council #11678 of Farmville.
       A Christian Wake Service will be held 7 p.m. Sunday, November 27, at the Shorter Funeral Home Chapel with Father Carl DeSouza officiating with visitation following afterwards until 8:30 p.m.
       A funeral Mass of Resurrection will be held 10 a.m. on Monday, November 28 at St. Theresa Catholic Church with Father Bob Spencer officiating. Burial will take place in the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia at 2 p.m. with full military honors provided by Crewe VFW Post 7819.

Nell Sanderson, 74

Dies Friday

      NOVEMBER 22 - Nell Ward Sanderson, 74, of Farmville, died Friday, November 18, 2005 at her residence.
      Mrs. Sanderson was a member of Guinea Presbyterian Church and a charter member of the Redbud Garden Club of Cumberland County. She was a volunteer for the Southslde Community Hospital Auxiliary of Volunteers.
     She is survived by a daughter, Teresa Stewart and husband, Jay of Farmville; a sister, Betty Ward Torrence and husband, Allen of Appomattox; three brothers, Eugene J. Ward, Jr. and wife, Leenell of Farmville, Edward P. Ward and wife, Joyce B. of Chesterfield and Lawrence B. Ward and wife, Joyce G. of Farmville; two granddaughters, Jessica and Sydney Stewart of Farmville and her devoted caregivers, Shelby Willey and Sharon Shaw. She was preceded in death by husband, George Jesse Sanderson; a sister, Martha Covington and a brother, Robert A, Ward.
      Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

      He was the son of the late Robert and Imelda Gallant Clickner.

      NOVEMBER 17 - John Spencer Baker, 74, of Farmville, died Tuesday, November 15, 2005.
      He is survived by his former wife and devoted friend, Judy Ann Hart of Farmville; sons, Timothy Craig Baker of Farmville, John Spencer Baker, Jr. of Hitchcock, TX, James Steven Baker of Cash, OK: daughters, Daphne Gwendolyn Baker and Daria Renee Lewis of Texas City, TX; brothers, James D. Baker, Sr. of Prospect, Herbert Baker and Billy J. Baker of Florsant, MO, Delmar Baker of Grove, IL, and Homer Baker of Charleston, MO; sisters, Martha Jane Jackson of Texas City, TX, and Regina Rose Viamontes; and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Cecil E. Baker.

Of Farmville, Dies


      NOVEMBER 17 - Gilbert N. Wood, Sr., 94, of Farmville, died Tuesday, November 15, 2005 in Farmville.
      He is the widower of Grace Cobb Wood and was the son of Nettie Brown and Wilbur Wood. Mr. Wood was a member of the Farmville United Methodist Church, past president of the Farmville Rotary Club and the Farmville Lions Club.
      "Woody," as he was known to his host of friends, was a long-time resident of Farmville, and a man of many talents. He was a professional barber, former owner/manager of The Farmville Motel, builder of many brick homes, landlord and jack of all trades. He was a history buff and collector, especially of coins.
      He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Wood of Appomattox, and two sons, Gilbert N. Wood, Jr. of Farmville and Julian H. Wood of Wade, NC. He also leaves to cherish his memory, one granddaughter, Cindy Burnette and husband, Walter, and their daughter, Renny Burnette; and one grandson, Robert E. Wood and his daughter, Kimberly Wood and son, Tyier Wood.
      Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Westview Cemetery, with Rev. Michael Browder, officiating.

William W. Baldwin, 74

Dies Monday


      NOVEMBER 15 - William W. Baldwin, 74, of Rice, died Monday, November 14, 2005, at Veteran's Medical Center, Richmond.
      Born on August 20, 1929, in Prince Edward County, he was the son of the late Emmett W. Baldwin and Hallie Mae Scruggs Baldwin.
       Mr. Baldwin was retired from the U.S. Army.
     He is survived by one sister, Mazie B. Ellis of Annandale, three brothers, Wallace Baldwin and wife, Doris, of Farmville, Joseph K. Baldwin and wife, Pat, and Charles E. Baldwin and wife, Betty, all of Rice. He was preceded in death by a brother, Calvin E. Baldwin.
      The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Veteran's Cemetery in Amelia.

Gary B. Brunner, 54
Of Cumberland
Dies Sunday


      CUMBERLAND, Nov. 15 - Gary "Little Man" Bradford Brunner, 54, of Cumberland, died Sunday, November 13, 2005.
      He is survived by his wife, Gloria J. Brunner, who is store manager of Family Dollar in Dillwyn. Also surviving are his twins, Angela and David Brunner; stepson, Michael Wade; mother, Mildred Brunner; sister, Elizabeth B. Wyatt: two brothers, Frank Michael and Earl "Jody" Brunner.
      Gary was preceded in death by his father, his daughter and brother, Frank J., Tiffany Paige and David S. Brunner.
      Mr. Brunner was very dedicated to his community, serving as president for four years of the Cumberland Youth League. He was a Boy Scout leader with the Cumberland Boy Scout Troop. He worked with the Cumberland County Housing Development until his illness and was also the sound technician at the Pleasant View Baptist Church.
      Mr. Brunner was a partner at Brunner's Store in Cumberland. He was a dedicated husband, father and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
      The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at Pleasant View Baptist Church, Columbia, with interment in the church cemetery.

      NOVEMBER 15 - Cecile Sanderson Amos, 80, of Farmville, died Monday, November 14,2005.
      She was the daughter of the late Jesse Walton and Lily Shepherd Sanderson, born May 23,1925.
      She is survived by her husband, Wilfred Clyde Amos, of Farmville; two sons. Lee Walton Amos and William Marshall Amos both of Farmville; two daughters, Margaret Amos Hoi-man and Betty Amos Wright both of Farmville; 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

GREEN BAY, Nov. 15 - Bertha Kallam Glascock, 85, of Brookview in Farmville, formerly of Green Bay, died Monday, November 14, 2005.
      Mrs. Glascock was born in Victoria on June 14, 1920, the daughter of the late Dameron and Nancy Elizabeth Smith Kallam.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Glascock, and survived by two sons, Steven Dale Glascock and wife Jackie of Farmville, and James Earl Glascock of Capron; a daughter, Joyce St. John and husband Joe, of Charlotte, NC; a sister, Mary Harrison of Petersburg; five grandchildren, Joey M. St. John and wife Lisa of Waxhaw, NC, David Jeffrey St. John of Charlotte, NC, Abby Kathryn Glascock of Farmville, Elizabeth Hope Glascock of Franklin, Tara Alien Carter of Wingina; three great-grandchildren, Austin Miller St. John of Waxhaw, NC, Colton Gray Carter and Lillie Grace Carter, of Wingina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

      NOVEMBER 15 - Virginia Maebelle Rush Foster, 71, died Saturday, November 5, 2005 at Trinity Mission Nursing Home, Farmville.
      Maebelle, as she was called by many, was born January 28, 1934 in Chestnut Grove, Esmont. She was the daughter of the late William Lewis Rush and Alberta Barrett.
      She was a member of Beulah A.M.E. Church in Farmville where she was on the Steward Board and in the choir.
      She is survived by three daughters. Sherry Brown (David) of Cumberland, Avis Butts (Michael) of Virginia Beach and Claudia Cobbs of Farmville; brothers, Charles Rush and his wife, Margaret H. of Esmont and John Watkins of Washington, DC; 12 grandchildren: 11 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles G. Woodson, Jr.
      Funeral services were held 12 noon Thursday at Beulah A.M.E. Church, Farmville, with interment in Odd Fellows Cemetery.

      NOVEMBER 10 - Norman Alton Taylor, 88, of Farmville, died Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at his home.
      He is survived by his wife, Arlene Dalton Taylor; four daughters, Patsy Meyers of Florida, Rebecca Carwile-Hosmer of Farmville, Shirley Tuggle of Manassas and Renia Douglass of Woodstock; three sons, Larry Taylor of California, Robert Carwile of Farmville and Thomas Hall of Nokesville; 14 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Lawrence H. Gills, 88

Native, Dies Monday


      RICHMOND, Nov. 10 - Lawrence Harwood Gills, 88, of Richmond, formerly of Buckingham County, died Monday, November 7, 2005 after a short illness.
      Born in Buckingham County, February 27, 1917, he was the son of the late Henry W. Gills, Sr. and Leona Cary Duncan Gills of Sheppards.
      Mr. Gills was a retired employee of American Tobacco Company in Richmond. A veteran of World War II, he served with the 8th Air Force in England as a radar mechanic and wore the European Theatre of Operations ribbon with five battle stars. He attended Lakeside Baptist Church and was a member of the Northside Masonic Lodge #292 AF-AM for 57 years.
      He is survived by one brother, D. Wallace Gills of Richmond and one sister, June L. Gills of Washington D.C. Also nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, 0. Carroll Gills and Henry W. Gills, Jr. and four sisters, Irene Gills, Lillie Gills, Louise McLaughlin and Estelle Scott.
      A Masonic service was held Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at Bliley Funeral Homes-Staples Mill Chapel.
     A graveside services was held 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond. The Rev. Robert J. Lewis officiated.

      NOVEMBER 10 - Roberta Dinwiddie Ruffner, 87, of Luray, died Friday, October 7, 2005.
      She was born in Appomattox, a daughter of Joseph Edwin Dinwiddie and Ola Harris Dinwiddie. She was the granddaughter of John Sampson Harris and Lavalette Ford Harris of the Five Forks neighborhood of Prince Edward County where her grandfather and parents are buried at Bethpeor Baptist Church there. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bedinger Ruffner.
      She is survived by daughters, Joan Elizabeth Shovar of Denver, Colorado, Barbara Jane Thompson of Shenandoah and Donna Jean Miller of Luray; a brother, Joel Watson Dinwiddie of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
      An Eastern Star service was held October 10 at Bradley Funeral Home, Luray. A graveside service was conducted by Elder Ernest Long on October 11.

      He is survived by two sons, John Leroy Blanton and Richard Copeland; two daughters, Elsie Louise Langhorne and Ora Bell Lewis; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry and Elijah Blanton; two sons-in-law, John Wesley Langhorne and the Rev. Rye-lander Lewis; a daughter-in-law, Lizzie Blanton; two sisters-in-law, one devoted Nell Blanton and Rosa Blanton and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, one devoted James Trent.

"Jennie" Webb
Dies Friday
At Age 100


      NOVEMBER 8 - Jane Glenn "Jennie" Webb, 100, of Farmville, died peacefully at her home Friday, November 4, 2005.
      She was born June 19, 1905, the daughter of E. Melvin and Tola Brightwell Glenn.
      Mrs. Webb was a farmer, florist and most of all a wonderful mother. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Webb and son, John Thomas Webb.
      She is survived by eight children, Henry Webb, Boyd Webb and his wife, Yvonne, Hugh Webb and his wife, Martha, Willye Nixon and her husband, Nix, Susan Hunt and her husband, Jimmy, Rochie Alien and her husband. Billy, Kathleen Morris and her husband, Ray and Glenda Webb; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
      Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at Farmville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Browder, officiating. Interment followed in Westview Cemetery.
      Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Farmville Volunteer Fire Department.
