Dies Tuesday
KEYSVILLE, Nov. 3 - Thomas "Tom" Howard Delp, 93,
of Keysville, died Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at his home.
He was born in Princeton, West Virginia and was
owner/operator of Southside Electric Sales and Services of Richmond.
He is survived by his wife, Dortha; daughter,
Lynsay Hewlett of Louisburg, NC; son, James Patterson of Charlotte, NC; two
stepdaughters, Wanda Crouse of Elizabeth City, NC and Sandra Roberts of
Chesterfield; ten grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; twin
great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held 2 p.m. today
(Thursday) in Dale Memorial Park in Chesterfield County.

"Pete" Jenkins, 55
RICE, Nov. 3 - Calvin J. "Pete" Jenkins, Jr., 55,
of Rice, died Sunday, October 30, 2005.
He worked at Ft. Pickett in Blackstone and was a
member of the Virginia National Guard for the past 37 years. He volunteered his
time to the Rice Fire Department and as a member of the Rice First Responders.
He was a member of the Burke Lodge # 147 A.F & A.M. Masonic Lodge in Burkeville.
He is survived by his mother, Nellie C. Jenkins;
son, Randall S. Jenkins; two brothers, Victor T. "Bill" Jenkins and Robert Terry
Jenkins and wife, Diane all of Rice.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday at
Shorter Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Earl Wallace officiating.
Interment followed in Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery, Rice.

John A. Perini, 81
Dies Friday
In Farmville
NOVEMBER 3 - John Anthony Perini, 81, died at his
home in Farmville on Friday, October 28, 2005.
Mr. Perini was a veteran of the U.S. Marine
Corps, having served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during World War II and
fought for his country in the Battle of Peleliu. After the war, he returned to
New Jersey and served as Mayor of Hope, New Jersey and was one of the founding
members of the Hope Fire Department. Upon retiring as a dairy farmer, the family
moved to Farmington, New Mexico and lived there for 15 years before moving to
Virginia.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years,
Victoria; three sons and their wives. Tony and Mary of Farmville, Matthew and
Cathy of Socorro, New Mexico and Victor and Laurel of Memphis, Tennessee; ten
grandchildren;four great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Bozzuffi of Belvidere,
New Jersey; a brother, Rudy Perini and his wife, Joan of Clinton Corners, New
York; son-in-law, Thomas Maer and a daughter-in-law, Carmen Perini-Vidal both of
Guatemala City, California.
A Christian Wake Service was held 7 p.m. Tuesday
at the Shorter Funeral Home Chapel.

Cancer Society or to St. Theresa Catholic Church.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Nov. 3 - Louise R. Gilliam
died Monday, October 24, 2005 in Farmville.
She was born November 24, 1916 in Cumberland
County, a daughter of the late Cupid and Alice Short Robinson and granddaughter
of Cupid Robinson, Sr., one of the founders of Sharon Baptist Church.
Mrs. Gilliam was a member of Sharon Baptist
Church, the Sr. Missionaries, House of Ruth, vice president of the Sr. Ushers
and First President of the Pastor's Aid Ministry.
She attended school at the Cumberland Training School and worked at Kilcare
Laundry, Dunnington's Tobacco Factory and retired from Stackpole Components
Company.
She is survived by seven children, Julia G. Leach
(Bob) of New Rochelle, New York, Milton Gilliam (Diane) of Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, Joseph C. Gilliam (Dorothy), Roberta G. Ferguson, Barbara Gilliam
and Samuel L. Gilliam all of Farmville and Joyce Gilliam of Neptune, New Jersey;
two brothers, Lawrence Robinson (Dorothy) and William Robinson, Sr. (Thelma) all
of Farmville; a sister-in-law, Dorothy C. Robinson of Laurens, South Carolina;
28 grandchildren, four of whom she raised as her own; 75 great-grandchildren; 24
great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members
and friends.
Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Saturday at
Sharon Baptist Church, Cumberland, with interment in the church cemetery.

Veonie W. Young, 90
Dies Wednesday
In Danville
DANVILLE, Nov. 3 - Veonie Worsham Young, 90, of
Danville, died Wednesday, November 2,2005.
She was born October 7, 1915 in Danville, a
daughter of the late Samuel Akers Worsham and Sarah Annie Pulliam Worsham. She
was predeceased by her first husband, Melvin Evans and her second husband, Toy
Lee Young.
Mrs. Young was raised in Eden, North Carolina and
lived her adult life in Danville. She moved to Charlotte Court House in 1961 and
resided there for 15 years before returning to Danville, where she has lived for
the past 30 years.
She retired from Dan River Mills, Inc., where she
worked as a spinner. While residing in Charlotte Court House, she wrote news for
the social column for The Farmville Herald and Charlotte Gazette
newspapers. Mrs. Young was a member of Bethlehem Community Presbyterian Church
in Charlotte Court House, where she had been a Sunday school teacher. She
attended Full Gospel Fellowship Church as long as her health permitted her to do
so.
She is survived by her daughter, Annette Marie
Turman of the residence; four grandchildren, Ronnie W. Gobble of Roxboro, NC,
Bennett A. Gobble and Glenn L. Turman both of Danville and Velvet D. Turman of
Greenville, SC; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and 11
great-step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson, Kim S. Gobble; five
stepchildren, Allen Young, Morty Young, Fletcher Young, Blanche Y. Scruggs and
Bertha Y. Waddle; four sisters. Bertha W. Rogers, Rena W. Coleman, Mammie W.
Kennon and Effie W. Lundsford and two brothers, Oscar Worsham and Aubrey
Worsham.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at
Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main Chapel, Danville, with the Reverend Roger Ewing and the
Reverend John Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial
Park.
The family will receive friends Friday evening
from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

She was the daughter of the late Frank E. and

Vaughan and Delmas Mann; a grandson, Jason Daniel Mann all of Charlotte Court

Farmville and a brother, Earl Seamster of Farmville. She was predeceased by
sisters and a brother, Mildred Overstreet, Elnora Guthrie and Arthur "L.C."

He was a retired Post Master and a US Air Force
Veteran of World War II.

friends. She was active in her church and community for many years and blessed
with many talents, she especially enjoyed being a homemaker, cooking, sewing and
quilting.

Born in Appomattox County, June 8, 1909, he was a
son of the late Thomas C. and Rosa Fore Cumbey.
Mr. Cumbey was a member of Pamplin United
Methodist Church for 82 years and was a clerk with Davidson's Department Store
retiring after 20 years of service. Following retirement he was employed by
Marshall's Department Store in Appomattox.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Etta
Lucado Cumbey; one daughter, Jean C. Austin of Richmond; three grandchildren,
Jeffrey Austin and his wife, Beth of Richmond, Kevin Austin of Nashville, TN and
Brian Austin of Richmond and two great-granddaughters, Kate and Ella Austin.

OCTOBER 25 - Janet Hix Scott, 50, of Farmville,
died Sunday, October 23, 2005 at her home.
Born in Farmville, March 25, 1955, she was the
daughter of John and Florence Oliver Hix of Hixburg.
Mrs. Scott was a member of Hobson's Chapel United
Methodist Church, a consummate educator and a strong supporter and active
participant in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
She is survived by her husband. Thomas Porter
Scott, III; two sons, Thomas Edwin Scott and John Harwood Scott both of
Farmville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John David and Gloria Hix, Thomas
