Callie Black, 86
Retired LPN
Dies Wednesday
SEPTEMBER 1 - Callie Oviola Bryant Black, 85,
died Wednesday, August 31, 2005 in Farmville.
She was the daughter of the late Lonnie W. Bryant
and Alma S. Bryant. She was born July 21, 1920 in Surry County, North Carolina
and married January 5, 1939 in Cumberland. She was preceded in death by her
husband of 42 years, Alfred M. Black, six children who died in infancy, two
sisters, one brother and one half brother.
During her childhood, she was unable to complete
high school. Then getting married and having a family to take care of it seemed
that a high school diploma was out of reach, but later in life at the urging of
the late E. Armstrong Smith, she enrolled in a correspondence course and with
the help of two school teachers, Miss Mary Martin of Sunnyside and the late
Nanny Harrison of Ashby, she completed the course needed to obtain her high
school diploma and was honored by Mr. Smith as a graduate with the class of 1966
of Cumberland High School.
She began her career in the nursing field as a
Nurse's Aide in 1967 at the age of 47, then fulfilling her dream of becoming a
nurse, she graduated from the Southslde School of Practical Nursing. She retired
from hospital work as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1988 having been employed
all of her career at Southslde Community Hospital. First on the East Wing of the
original building, then on the second floor of the new hospital building. Her
enthusiasm for nursing showed because she always supported each class of the
nursing school by attending every capping ceremony and graduation after her own
until her health prevented her from doing so.
She was a member of Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist
Church, The American Legion Post 269 Auxiliary and The Cumberland Historical
Society and was a Lodge Widow of Cumberland Lodge No. 283 A.F. & A.M. During her
membership of the auxiliary she considered it an honor to place American flags
on the graves of the veterans who were buried at that time in the cemeteries of
Cumberland County each year for Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. She began this
tribute in 1967 and continued the ritual each year adding the recent graves of
veterans to the number of flags placed until her health prevented her from doing
so. At last count, she recorded that she was placing nearly 200 flags each
holiday. She had a love for helping others and though her earnings were meager,
if there was someone in need, she would give them a check to help with their
expenses without thinking twice about it.
She is survived by two sons, James D. (J.D.)
Black of Richmond and Marion W. (Billy) Black of Wingina; a daughter-in-law,
Debora S. (Debbie) Black and a special step-granddaughter. Hope Stinson; a
grandson, Alfred W. Black; a brother, Garfield Bryant of Cumberland; a sister,
Anna Barlow of Milford and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and
great-nephews whom she loved.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m.
at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Oak Grove Baptist Church
Cemetery, Cumberland.
The family will receive friends this evening
(Thursday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
