      POWHATAN, Aug. 4 - Charles S. "Chuck" Krohn, 54, of Powhatan passed away.
      He was born March 22, 1951 in Ohio, a son of Anton M. and Mary Jones Krohn of Chesterfield.
      Mr. Krohn was employed with the Cumberland County Public Schools since 1996 as a teacher, coach, and mentor to many students through his work with the Gentlemen's Club.
      In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Dennis Krohn of Toledo, Ohio.
      A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, with  interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
      The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dies July 23


      ANNANDALE, Aug. 4 - Harry Lee Spurlock, of Annandale, died Saturday, July 23, 2005.
      He was born February 24, 1923, a son of the late C. L. and Esther Spurlock.
      Mr. Spurlock graduated from Green Bay High School.
     He is survived by his son, Steven L. Spurlock of Washington, DC; a daughter, Suzanne S. Andleton of Virginia Beach; sisters, Mary Frances Taylor of Richmond, Virginia Cooper of Richmond and Wilma Howie of Arlington, TX; a brother, Edward G. Spurlock of Albuquerque, NM and grandchildren, Lydia and Julia. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Spurlock of Farmville.
       Graveside services will be held Friday, August 19 at 10 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery.
       Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Washington Conservatory of Music.

      NEW CANTON, Aug. 4 - Kate Carter Jones, 91, of New Canton, affectionately known as "Mama Kate", died Tuesday, August 2,2005.
      She was born October 8, 1913, a daughter of the late Elmo and Kate Carter. She was the widow of Angelo Burnett Jones.
      She is survived by her children, Doris Jones Keller and husband, Charles D. of Hanover, Annie Jones Bryant and husband, Robert Earl and Joel Lee Jones and wife, Anne Williams all of New Canton; nine grandchildren, Brenda A. Maser, Mark Bryant, Carolyn Keller, Lois Frank, Angela Sandquist, Wendy Longest, Jennifer Tu, Jody Jobeck and Jeff Jones; 15 great-grandchildren, Christopher and Bridget Spicer, Jessica and David Lowe, Kyle, Conner, Hanna and Audrey Frank, Justine and Kelly Sandquist, Holly, Emmy and Macy Longest, Kiara and Selena Tu. She was preceded in death by two sons, Peter Heywood and Bruce Randolph Jones and a great-granddaughter, Christa Jobeck.
      Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Buckingham Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Deskins.

      AUGUST 2 - Aubrey Burgess, Jr., 44, of Kingsport, Tennessee, died Thursday, July 28, 2005.
      He was a sales representative for AFG Glass Company.
      His mother, Helen Burgess preceded him in death.
     Surviving are three daughters, Audrey Burgess of Kingsport, TN, Krystal Plummer of Iraq and Catherine Burgess of Hiltons; his father, Aubrey Burgess, Sr. of Davenport, FL;mother, Betty Griffith of Newport News; four sisters, Ann Erikson of Iowa, Lisa Johnson and Julia Holman both of Farmville and Christina Burgess of Davenport, FL and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces.
      Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.

Coles and Barbara R. Johnson; mother of his child and lifetime devoted friend, Gwendolyn Johnson;three aunts, Toni Bing, Mary Virginia Henderson and Grade Brown; three uncles. Earl Mayo, Paul Tanner and George Mayo;two brothers-in-law, Alexander Coles and Kenneth Johnson; a sister-in-law, Willetta Riddle;nine nieces and nephews, Randolph, Jr., Crystal, Natasha, Shante, Alexis, Nicole, Alicia, Jeona and Vydez and many cousins and friends, five devoted, Donnie and Barry Tyson, John Wade, Calvin Ford and George Graves.
      Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant View Baptist Church, Columbia, with the Rev. Andrew Jackson, Jr., pastor officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

      RICE, July 28 - The Rev. Clagett Doyle Canady, Sr., 79, of Rice, died Wednesday, July 27, 2005 in Farmville.
      He was born January 24, 1926 in Doyle, Mississippi, a son of the late Clagett Doyle and Carrie Lily Frazier Canady.
      He served his country in the U.S. Army in Japan during World War II. He was a minister.
      He is survived by four children, Nancy Carol Parker of Prospect, Clagett "Slugger" Canady, Jr. of Woodbridge, Donald Paul Canady of Keysville and Daniel Eric Canady of Stafford;12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Lee Bassi and Barbara Ann Bramuchi both of Mississippi;and the mother of his children, Pauline Canady of Keysville. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Z. T. Bailey.
      A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.
      The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville.

Dies Tuesday


      BUCKINGHAM, July 28 - Grace Lena Davidson Springer, 79, of Buckingham, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005.
      She was born May 26, 1926 in the Nuckols community of Buckingham County. She was the youngest child of the late Walter Fontaine Davidson, Sr. and Hazel Melvin Farmer Davidson.
      Mrs. Springer was the secretary treasurer of Adams Oil Company for over 30 years. She was an active member of Buckingham Baptist Church, serving as church treasurer, Sunday school teacher. Women's Missionary Union officer, and member of both the Fellowship Committee and the church choir.
      She is survived by Herman Shepherd Springer, her husband of 59 years; six nieces;nine nephews; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
      Funeral services will be held 12 noon Friday at Buckingham Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
      The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to 8 p.m. at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

      JULY 19 - William Henry Dunlap, Jr., 84, of Farmville, died Sunday, July 17, 2005.
      He was born in Stanley, the son of the late William Henry Dunlap, Sr. and Reda Shenk Dunlap.
      Mr. Dunlap was retired as an engineer from Centel-Sprint and a World War II Navy veteran of the Battleship USS California. He was a past Deacon and member of Farmville Baptist Church, VFW Post #7059 and a former member of the Farmville Ruritan Club and the USS California Association.
      He is survived by his wife, Coceile "Ceile" Dunlap; a son, Derrick Lynn Dunlap and wife, Jordan M. of Richmond; a daughter-in-law, Jackie C. Shaw and husband, Robert of Fife;three grandchildren, Frederick Dunlap of Richmond, William Ryan Dunlap and wife. Shannon Lee of California, Megan Suzanne Stacy and husband, Jesse R. of Richmond; a great-grandchild, Bryston R. Stacy of Richmond. He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Frederick Dunlap and two sisters, Jeanette Dunlap Johnson and Mary Josephine Dunlap Ranson.

      He was born June 23, 1930, a son of the late Mason Tucker and Elizabeth Wilmouth Scott. He was the widower of Marjorie Scott.
      Mr. Scott served in the U.S. Navy and was the retired owner of Farmville Well Drilling Company.
