of Cumberland, died Monday, June 20, 2005.
She was born October 12, 1928 in Tennessee, the
daughter of the late Robert A. Way-caster and Belle Adams Waycaster. She was the
widow of Alfred Eugene Ownby.
She is survived by two daughters, Judy Ownby
(Hollifield) and Carol Ownby both of Cumberland; a special daughter and
caregiver, Denise Stout and husband, William and their children, Tony and
Shelby; five grandchildren, Gene, Ryan and Evan Whaley, Jeff and Alan Henshaw;
seven great-grandchildren; four brothers, A. G. Waycaster, J. D. Waycaster,
Billy Waycaster and Ted Waycaster all of Dillwyn.
Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday
at 11 a.m. at Jones Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery, Cumberland.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7

grandchildren, Jaliz Williams of Jonesboro, GA and Shane Williams of Paterson,
NJ;three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a devoted sister,

brother, Thomas V. Jones (Ann Marie) of Lawrenceville, NJ; three sisters-in-law;
two brothers-in-law and other relatives and friends.

Galvin L. Jenkins, 85
Father of Local Resident
Dies Friday
VICTORIA, June 14 - Deacon Galvin Lewis Jenkins,
85, of Victoria, died Friday, June 10, 2005 at Community Memorial Health center,
South Hill.
He was born in Rehoboth, January 27, 1920 to the
late William Lewis and Georgia Fields Jenkins.
His teaching and administrative career covered a
period of 34 years. He taught and supervised the first Instructional Veterans'
Program at Southampton County Training School, Cumberland, for two years. For 12
years, he taught and supervised the Vocational Agriculture Program at Lunenburg
High School. He served as principal of Lunenburg High School for eight years and
at Lunenburg Junior High School for 11 years.
During his professional career he has been a
member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, vice president of Secondary School
Principals of VA, Teachers' Association, president of Southern District of V.I.A.,
president of the Lunenburg Teachers' Association and Southslde Junior High
School Principal's Conference and a member of the Middle School Forum.
During retirement he served a president of the
Lunenburg High School Alumni Association, chairman of the board of directors of
Lunenburg Senior Citizens, Inc., member of the School Board Selection
Commission, vice president of Lunenburg County Litter Control Program and the
Citizens Advisory Committee for Elementary School Building Program. He was a
member of the Lunenburg Industrial Certification Development Commission, the
Lunenburg-Nottoway Teachers' Retirement Association, District "D" Retired
Teachers' Association, a Master Mason in Victoria Masonic Lodge #187 and the
Board of Supervisors for Love's Mill District.
Mr. Jenkins was baptized at Messiah Baptist
Church, Yonkers, New York, a former member of Calvary Baptist Church, Victoria
and a member of First Baptist Church, Victoria.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Harris
Jenkins; one daughter. Avis Jenkins Gresby of Farmvllle; one sister, Marion
McGhee of Rhode Island; two dedicated cousins, Cranford Jenkins of Chase City
and Joan Williams of Yonkers, NY; one son-in-law, Donnie W. Gresby; six
sisters-in-law, Marian H. Nottingham and Evelyn H. Price of Richmond, Selena R.
Harris, Barbara Harris and Emma Lou Boykins of Courtland and Florence P. Harris
of Hampton;
one brother-in-law, the Rev. Delaware F. Harris of Courtland and a vast number
of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. today
(Tuesday) at First Baptist Church, Victoria, with the Rev. F. H. Bagley, Jr.
officiating. Burial with Military Honors was held in First Baptist Church
Memorial Gardens.

BUCKINGHAM CH, June 14 - Louise Morriss Swartz,
widow of Harold Franklin Swartz, of Mohawk Farm at Buckingham Court House, died
Saturday, June 11, 2005 after a brief illness.
She was the daughter of the late Garland
Lightfoot Morriss, MD and Louise Rice Morriss.
Mrs. Swartz was a graduate of William and Mary
College and a former teacher, extension agent and director of the Buckingham
County Department of Welfare. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and
many community organizations including Historic Buckingham, Inc. and the
Daughter of the American Revolution.
She is survived by three children, Garland
Franklin Swartz of Richmond, Louise Lightfoot Cohen of Virginia Beach and Laura
Swartz Roach of Newberg, Oregon; five grandchildren, Lucy Varna Swartz Redlich,
William Franklin Cohen, Garland Scott Cohen, Jessica Anne Riehl and Courtney
Crawford Roach and three great-grandchildren, Danielle Louise Cohen, Ryan
Christopher Cohen and Lucy Marlta Redlich. She was preceded in death by a
grandson, Johns Franklin Swartz.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen
Pence Saxon; sons. Dr. Walter E. (Wes) Saxon, Jr. and wife, Angela, Richard P.
Saxon and wife, Lori and Robert H. Saxon: a daughter, Martha N. Martin and
husband, Randy; a brother, J. Heard Saxon, Jr. of Dothan, Georgia; a sister,
Mary Win! Saxon of Mathews, North Carolina; grandchildren, Walter E., Ill,
Joshua I. and John P., Cory-Neal, Shane, Casey and Carson Butwin, Steven
MacMillan, Katie and Robert H., Jr. and Charles, Jr. and Andrew Martin. He was
preceded in death by brothers. Warren and Neal Saxon.
Mr. Saxon was a veteran, having served in the
Navy. He was a graduate of Auburn University and was an Exxon Distributor for 38
years in Dillwyn. He was a charter member of the Buckingham County Volunteer
Rescue Squad, serving 20 years, some as president and treasurer, a past
president of the Buckingham Ruritan Club, a board member of New Dominion School
and an elder in Maysville Presbyterian Church. In 2004 he received the
Buckingham Achievement Award from the Chamber of Commerce.
Services were held at Maysville Presbyterian
Church in Buckingham on Monday at 2 p.m. Burial was in Buckingham Community
Cemetery.

Dies Monday
NEWPORT NEWS, June 9 - Barbara P. Meador, 71,
died Monday, June 6, 2005 at her home at Warwick Forest after a courageous
battle with cancer.
She was the daughter of the late Louis and Irene
Phelps. She was born and raised in Farmville and was a long-time resident of
Seaford before moving to Warwick Forest in Newport News.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 51
years, Hunter R. Meador; two sisters, Teresa P. Lloyd and Betty P. Woodfin;
three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Renee Meador, David and Kimberly
Meador, and Jon and Corinne Meador; and five grandchildren, Marie, Josh,
Charlotte, Julia, and Lance.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 pm on
Friday, June 10 at Amory Funeral Home in Grafton.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, June 11 in Peninsula Memorial Park, Klaire Jameson officiating. A

Dies in Tennessee
CROSSVILLE, TN, June 7 - Clyde Howard Bliss, 88,
son of the late Samuel Clyde and Cassandra Howard Bliss, died in Crossville.
Tennessee, on Tuesday, June 7,2005.
A native of Farmville, Mr. Bliss was educated in
Farmville and received a degree from Purdue University. He was a coach and
always a part of the sports world.
He is survived by a son, Theodore Bliss of Kent,
Ohio;
three nieces, Alice Theresa Bliss of Onancock, Katherine Parker Stevens and
Elizabeth Howard Conyers of Fishersville and a nephew, Knighton Langslow Bliss
of Spring Hill, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguarite and
a brother, Mason Langslow Bliss.
Services will be held in Kent, Ohio. Arrangements

Cocks Keyser, 89, of Greensboro, North Carolina, formerly of Hot Springs, died
Friday, June 3, 2005 at the High Point Care Center in High Point, North
Carolina.
She was born June 7, 1915 in Prospect, the
daughter of the late Thomas Robert Newton Cocks and Lilian Pollard.
Mrs. Keyser was married to Albert Hayden Keyser, Sr., who preceded her in death
on June 13, 1983. She was a teacher and homemaker and a member of Hot Springs
Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Women's Circle.
She is survived by a son, Douglas P. Keyser of
Greensboro; a daughter-in-law, Mimi Byrd Keyser of Hot Springs; four
grandchildren, Roberta Keyser Fortune of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, Douglas P.
Keyser, Jr. and Rebecca "Becky" Keyser both of Greensboro and Al Keyser, III of
Hot Springs; seven great-grandchildren, Marlena Fortune of Lansdale, Cody and
Casey Raymer and Megan Jones all of Greensboro, Emily Adams, Hayden Keyser and

MAY 31 - Ralph Smith Mahan, 75, of Farmville,
died at his home Saturday, May 28, 2005.
He was the son of the late Clyde S. Mahan and Ada
H. Mahan.
Mr. Mahan was a self-employed carpenter and
bricklayer, he also served the Cumberland County School System for many years as
a masonry Instructor. He was the owner and operator of Ralph's Used Cars of
Cumberland and was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by a daughter, Dianne M. Simpson
and her husband, Doyne of Prospect; a son, Rodger Mahan and his wife, Brenda of
Farmville; a daughter-in-law, Karen Kay Mahan of Farmville; two brothers, Clyde
Edward and his wife, Betty Sue of Farmville and Charles Earl and his wife, Ruby
of Richmond; two sisters, Virginia M. Ryall of Palmyra and Dorothy M. Young of
Roanoke; the grandfather of Candi Troyer and her husband, William, Shawn Mahan
and his wife, Nicole, Danielle Bappert and her husband, David, Pug Mahan, Jr.

Born in Buckingham, he spent his youth active in
the FFA and attended Buckingham Central High. He graduated from VCU to become an
active member of the real estate community, eventually retiring as a broker.
He is survived by his son, David Todd Heath and
daughter-in-law, Brandice of Surry County; a granddaughter, Ella Madison Spero;
three brothers, Percy Heath, Jr. and Donald Heath both of Buckingham and Curtis
Heath of Macon, Georgia.

where he was a service representative for 44 years. He was a member, former
deacon and Sunday school secretary of Victoria Baptist Church. He was a former
member of the Victoria Rotary Club and a World War II veteran.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Shirley
Jenkins Garrett; a son and daughter-in-law, Blaine and Janet Garrett of Glen
Allen; two granddaughters, Jordan and Alexandra Garrett;one brother, Hubert
Garrett of Halifax and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday at
Victoria Baptist Church with Dr. Stanley Hare and the Rev. John Dean
officiating. Interment was in Crewe Cemetery, Crewe.

M. H. Thompson
NORTH CAROLINA, May 31 - Maynard H. "Stumpy"
Thompson, died Thursday, May 26, 2005.
He was born in Boydton on October 26, 1922 to the
late Henry H. Thompson and Elizabeth R. Thompson.
Mr. Thompson was a graduate of Virginia Tech and
served in the army in the Philippines where he met Statia Kennedy, his first
wife and mother of his children.
He spent his career in the
textile business and was very involved in youth sports and in educational
volunteer efforts in Rocky Mount, NC.
Surviving are three sons, Butch Thompson of
Buckhead, GA, Ken Thompson of Charlotte, NC and Pete Thompson of High Point, NC;
one sister, Elsie T. Burger of Martinsville and formerly of Farmville and eight
grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Sunday at Pineview
Cemetery, Rocky Mount, NC.
Memorials may be made to the YMCA in Rocky Mount,
NC.
Arrangements were by Harry and Bryant Funeral
Home in Charlotte, NC.
